THINGS TO NOTE
We fantasize about the day we will crack XYZ examination, get a five-six-digit
salary, travel to this beautiful place, step into this new spacious house. The focus
is on the success, not the struggle. And it’s understandable — success is
glamorous, memorable, and marketable, while the struggle is drab, disagreeable,
and unattractive for the general public.
Yet, it’s making the effort, struggling, and sticking to your resolutions that shapes
you as a person. Success is a reward for having given it your best, but it’s not
always within your control whether and when you get to enjoy it. Whenever you
find yourself discouraged by your lack of success, remind yourself that the process
alone is your reward. It’s in your hands whether you allow yourself to see the
rewards the struggle generates or ignore them, mindlessly pursing the end result
as the sole indicator of success.
I failed numerous times in life. I could have despaired that I had lost so much time
and effort and money, but I hadn’t really failed. I had been true to my values of
pursuing the life I wanted. I kept going, despite the obstacles I constantly
encountered along the way.
Eventually my efforts paid off, but even if it had taken longer to get the results —
the struggle would still have been worth it for the immense changes I underwent
on the journey to pursue my dreams.

Solutions:

(1) Let the total work be 240 units.

PAGE 28

P’s one-day work = 12 units
Q’s one-day work = 15 units

R’s one-day work = 10 units

P and Q’s 5-days work = 27*5 = 135 units

Remaining work = 105 units

When P and R work on alternate days, total time taken to complete 105
units of work = 9.5 days

Total time = 5+9.5 = 14.5 days

(2) Downstream speed = 325/25 = 13 km/hour

Upstream speed = 210/30 = 7 km/hour

Speed of boat in still water = 10 km/hour

Required time = 279/10 = 27.9 hours

(3) Ratio of investments = 4200 * 12 : 3600 * 12 : 4800 * 6 = 7 : 6 : 4

17 units – Rs 1666

6 units – Rs 588
Required profit = Rs 588

(4) Ratio of CP to SP = 1 : 1 * 8/5 * 21/25 = 125 : 168

Required profit % = 43/125 * 100% = 34.4%

(5) Ratio of the ages before 6 years = 9 : 11

Ratio of present ages = 11 : 13

2 units – 6 years
1 unit – 3 years

13 units – 39 years
PAGE 29

Babita’s present age = 39 years
Babita’s brother’s present age = 44 years

Babita’s brother’s age after 10 years = 54 years

(6) 5625 *(100+R)% * (100+R)% = 7056

R = 12%
(7) (2x + 6)/(x+12) = 5/4

x = 12

Initial quantity of mixture = 12*3 = 36 litres

(8) Let total work be 120 units.

A’s one-day work = 15 units

B’s one-day work = 12 units

C’s one-day work = 20 units

(A+B+C)’s 2 days work = 47*2 = 94 units

Remaining work = 26 units

Required time = 26/35 hours
(9) Speed of upstream = 240/15 = 16 km/hour

Speed of downstream = 280/14 = 20 km/hour

Speed of water = 4/2 = 2 km/hour

(10) Volume of cone = 1/3 * 22/7 * 21 * 21 * 18 = 8316 m3

(11) Speed of truck = 425/17 = 25 km/hour

Required time = 225/25 + 200/20 = 19 hours

(12) Required number of ways = 7!*3!/2! = 15120

(13) Required probability = 5C1 * 3C1 * 2C1/10C3 = ¼

PAGE 30

(14) Required profit = 8% of Rs 9200 = Rs 736
(15) CSA of cylinder = 2*22/7 * 28 * 10 = 1760 cm2

(16) Initial milk = 60 litres

Initial water = 48 litres

(60+x+5)/(48 + x – 3) = 4/3
x = 15

Required quantity of milk and water = 2x + 2 = 2*15 + 2 = 32 litres

(17) Ratio of CP : SP : MP = 20 : 16 : 25

Discount % = 9/25 * 100% = 36%

(18) Ratio of profit of Vaibhav and Ritesh = 2200*7 : 2600*11 = 7 : 13

20% of 15000 = Rs 3000 (charity)

Remaining profit = Rs 12000

20 units – Rs 12000

13 units – Rs 7800
Required profit = Rs 7800
(19) Pihu + Pari + Paras (March) = 39000

Pihu + Pari (April) = 20000

Pihu + Pari (March) = 16000

Paras (March) = 39000 – 16000 = Rs 23000

(20) Required number of days = 2/3 * 24 = 16 days
