LISTENING TIPS & TRICKS
- GOOD notes
- Tone and stress (intonation)
- Expanded vocabulary

Listening 1/6

Tone and Stress (Intonation)

Boy: “Are you liking your new Spanish class?”

Girl: “It’s really great. The teacher never shows up.”

Question: What’s the girl’s attitude towards the class?

Listening 2/6

There are two possibilities here, depending on how

the girl says the sentence. If she lengthens the word
‘really’ and has a lat tone throughout the second
phrase, she is probably showing sarcasm, and
therefore doesn’t like the class.

On the other hand, if she pronounces ‘really great’

and ‘always’ with a high tone, she is showing
excitement and she must like the class as the teacher
is never there (less work for her!).

Listening 3/6
f

Tone and Stress (Intonation)

• Confusion/Uncertainty: multiple pauses/slow speech/ illers

‘Um..well..I guess I could”

• Excitement: high tone ‘That’s great!’

• Surprise: rising tone ‘Are you serious?”

• Consistent lat tone: boredom/indi erence “That’s great”.

Listen and guess the feeling of the
speaker based on the intonation

• Are you serious?

• I reckon we could do that

• What do you think?

Listening 5/6

Expanded vocabulary

• Adding information: In addition, for example, furthermore

• Explaining a result: Therefore, as a result, consequently

• Comparing & Contrasting: However, in contrast, on the other hand

• Giving reasons: Because (of), due to, for this reason, since, thanks to

WRITING TIPS & TRICKS
- GOOD planning
- Understand the task
- Proper essay structure

Writing 1/6

GOOD planning

• Every good writing essay starts with a plan

• Spend 5-10 minutes to plan your main argument &

supporting ideas

• You can use bullet points, mindmapping, etc.

Writing 2/6

Paraphrasing - Key to understanding the task

Add extra wording to make a sentence become your own. Using
your own words!

How? Take some key content words and ind a synonym or another
way to say the same idea.

Original: Symptoms of in luenza include fever and nasal

congestion.

Paraphrase: A stu y nose and elevated temperature are

signs you may have the lu.

Can you paraphrase these sentences?

a good view of the city.

Gira es like Acacia leaves and hay, and they can consume
40 kilograms of food a day.

“Say what you want to say,
then say it, then say what
you said.”

Writing 5/6
Proper essay structure

• Most essays will have an introduction paragraph, two body

paragraphs and a conclusion paragraph

• Don’t be afraid to restate your main idea repeatedly.

• Be sure your position is clear, try not to support both ideas at the
expense of clarity.

• Your ideas need to be consistent throughout.

READING TIPS & TRICKS
Many students tell me it’s essentially like a vocabulary test!

- Don’t worry if you don’t understand every word

- Read for pleasure, not for the test
- Timing is crucial

Reading 1/3

Don’t worry if you don’t understand every word

Skimming & scanning

• For every word you overthink that you don’t

understand, you’re wasting time

• Always get the main idea of the text before

reading the question
