INTRODUCTION

This paper investigates how effective is the use of modern media in storytelling today.
“Storytelling is the social and cultural activity of sharing stories, sometimes with improvisation, theatrics,
or embellishment. Every culture has its own stories or narratives, which are shared as a means of
entertainment, education, cultural preservation or instilling moral values.” (Retrieved from:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storytelling) While “modern media comes in many different formats,
including print media (books, magazines, newspapers), television, movies, video games, music, cell
phones, various kinds of software, and the Internet. Each type of media involves both content, and a
device or object through which that content is delivered.” (Retrieved from:
https://www.mentalhelp.net/internet/types-of-media/)
With the emergence of technology, storytelling, one of the oldest forms of entertainment, will
inevitably evolve and use different techniques to present a story better. But how does modern media
change the way a story is to be told? How effective is it in engaging its audience to be immersed in a
certain tale?
Computers, smart phones, tablets, televisions, and even gaming consoles are used to tell
stories, all differently using varying quirks to immerse the audience. Of course, we cannot ignore the old
forms, which are radios, paintings, and printed media. The integration of the modern media changed
the way stories are told, some are being watched, listened, played through, and read. All are ways that
make a tale more interesting by letting the people experience it differently.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The usage of modern media in storytelling currently has been very common, but its
effectiveness is yet to be understood. The way of using audio and visuals to tell a tale or even making
the audience play within, has psychological techniques used. Knowing what makes it so effective that
people cannot have enough of it can, without a doubt, make storytelling in filmmaking, writing, and
other forms of media, develop better and/or ultimately evolve once more.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

Storytelling has always been a part of humanity, learning how to tell a tale effectively by old
media needed a lot of knowledge. To pull it off from such an extent with the use of new and
complicated modern media, not to mention the almost repetitive ideas, in which trends and limitations in
technology are often changing and evolving, telling stories that will captivate the audience will prove to
be difficult. Which, in relation to this study, will make the techniques in storytelling known and proven, to
be able to create ground-breaking and improve existing ideas.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

The research will focus on what platform of the modern media greatly affects the experience of
storytelling, as well as the reasons on why it is effective compared to others and the old media.
The study will not go further into the techniques of storytelling but will be strictly tackling the
integration of media to achieve a certain result.
