collective, and compound nouns)

Noun
A noun is a word that names something: either a person, place, thing, or idea.

1. CONCRETE NOUN
Are names of material things, persons and places that can be perceived through the
senses.
Example: girl, flower, cat
2. ABSTRACT NOUNS
Are names of a concept, quality, emotion, condition, and attitude that has no material
existence.
Example: faith, hope, love
3. PROPER NOUNS
Are names of titles of a particular person, place, thing or idea. It usually begins with a
capital letter.

6. COMPOUND NOUNS
Are two or more words used together to form a single noun.
Example: bill + board = billboard

There are four kinds of compound nouns:

1. Two or more words joined to form a single word or noun.

Example: head + dress = headdress

2. Two or more words joined by hyphen to form a single word or single noun.
Example: sister – in – law
head – piece

3. Two or more words are used together to form a single noun but not joined.
Example: question + mark = question mark

4. The proper names are nouns which consist of more than one word.
Example: Mount Mayon
James Santos

4. Analysis
 Have the students play the Noun Game.
 Divide the class into 2.
 There should be 2 bowls in this game containing rolled papers. The first
bowl contains letters from A-Z. The second bowl contains words named:
person, place, thing, and idea.
 Have each member of the group pick a paper in the first and second bowl.
For instance, if they will pick letter A in the first bowl and the word Place
in the second bowl, they will think of a place that starts with letter A. If the
group member would not be able to give a noun in the count of 3, the
group will lose a point.
 The group who will gain more points will win the game and will get a
perfect score of 10. The losing team will get half of the score of the
winning team for participation.
5. Abstraction
 Open the class for queries and clarification
 If all are clarified, ask the students the following questions:
o What is a noun?
o What are the different kinds of noun?
