CE MARK
EN 1856 -1 / 2
CE STANDARD FOR
FACTORY-MADE MODULAR
CHIMNEY SYSTEMS

System testing & performance

CE MARK according to EN 1856-1 / 2

CE MARK
WHAT DOES THE CE MARK MEAN FOR STAINLESS STEEL CHIMNEY SYSTEMS?
The CE MARK is the symbol – obligatory since April 2005
– that certifies that a stainless steel chimney is in
accordance with the EN 1856-1.

This standard specifies the performance requirements for

rigid single and multi-wall system chimney products with
metallic liners (chimney sections, chimneys fittings and
terminals, including supports) used to convey the
products of combustion from appliances to the outside
atmosphere.

It also specifies the requirements for marking,

manufacturer’s instructions, product information and
evaluation of conformity of the product to the standard.

The EN 1856-1 does not apply to self-standing chimney

stacks.
CE MARK according to EN 1856-1 / 2

CE MARK
WHAT DOES THE CE MARK MEAN FOR STAINLESS STEEL CHIMNEY SYSTEMS?
The manufacturer is obliged to realize the complete
initial test of the chimney in a laboratory, and moreover, a
Certified Body will:

1. Annually check that the manufactured product has

the same quality as the tested one
2. Perform the quality control of the production process
to ensure that it will satisfy the CE requirements,
specified in the FPC (Factory Production Control).

The CE MARK of the stainless-steel chimney can only be

granted by a Certified Body.

The CE MARK enables the product to circulate freely in

the European market, but each country could have its
own installation rules

EN 1856-1 for vertical chimneys
EN 1856-2 for connecting pipes
2- TEMPERATURE LEVEL
Maximum working temperature.
The temperature used in the test and the resulting temperature levels achieved are as follows:

As guidance, the temperature ratings applicable are:

•T200: all gas and oil applications (including condensing)

•T450: solid fuels and multifuels
•T600: power generators and CHP’s

That means that to reach a Temperature level of T600 the test is conducted with 700 °C!
CE MARK according to EN 1856-1 / 2

CE MARKING
3- PRESSURE LEVEL

Admitted overpressure inside the flue, with its corresponding leakage rate

Pressure leakage rate

Test overpressure (Pa)
rating (1ˑs-1ˑm-2)
N1 <2,0 40
P1 <0,006 200
P2 <0,120 200
M1 <0,006 1500
M2 <0,120 1500
H1 <0,006 5000
H2 <0,120 5000
As guidance, the pressure ratings applicable are:

N1: natural draught Installations

P1: forced draught boiler installations
M1: fan assisted installations
H1: power generators , CHP’s and micro CHP’s

Take care of the different leakage rates H2 is not the same as H1!
Jeremias internal test for DWKL shows a pressure type of 15.000 with a leakage rate of H1
CE MARK according to EN 1856-1 / 2

CE MARKING
4- CONDENSATE RESISTANCE
Suitability of the flue for wet or dry conditions.
D: the flue is suitable only for dry conditions. It does not resist condensate.
W: the flue is suitable whether for dry and wet conditions. It resists condensate water inside.

5- CORROSION RESISTANCE

Level of corrosion resistance due to the products of combustion of the different kinds of combustibles and different working conditions (dry or wet)

– V1: Tested and approved as resistant to attack from products of combustion from gas.

– V2: Tested and approved as resistant to attack from products of combustion from light oil (sulphur content <0,2%) and natural wood in dry conditions, and
from gas in wet conditions (condensing appliances)

– V3: Tested and approved as resistant to attack from products of combustion from heavy oil (sulphur content >0,2%), solid fuels and peat in dry conditions

– Vm: Not tested. The manufacturer certifies only the material used in the inner wall by the quality certificate of the steel. For flues with this class there are
specific regulations in each country indicating what material is suitable for each installation. As general guidance the stainless steel AISI 304 is equivalent to
class V1, and the stainless steel AISI 316L is equivalent to classes V2 and V3
CE MARK according to EN 1856-1 / 2

CE MARKING
6- FLUE LINER MATERIAL SPECIFICATION

The material of the inner liner must be specified and its minimum thickness as well:

Designation
European AISI Kind of m aterial
EN 1856
L10 EN AW - 4047 A - Aluminium
L11 EN AW - 1200 A - Aluminium
L13 EN AW - 6060 - Aluminium
L20 1.4301 304 Stainless steel
L30 1.4307 304L Stainless steel
L40 1.4401 316 Stainless steel
L50 1.4571 316Ti Stainless steel
L50 1.4404 316l Stainless steel
L60 1.4432 316l Stainless steel
L70 1.4539 904l Stainless steel
L99 TBD TBD TBD

904L, is the highest quality grade and is expected to withstand the corrosion effect of multi-fuel, wood or heavy oil even in wet conditions. Light oil is less corrosive and
normally 304 (L20) has proved adequate in dry conditions, but in the increasingly common wet conditions created by high efficiency condensing boilers, the higher grade
is required. 316L. Is the most common used grade for gas and light oil in condensing conditions. After that, the minimum thickness of this inner liner is specified as follows:

– 040: 0,4mm
– 050: 0,5mm
– 060: 0,6mm
CE MARK according to EN 1856-1 / 2

CE MARKING
7- SOOT FIRE RESISTANCE (O: NO; G: YES)

Soot fire resistance and minimum distance to combustible material

It is expressed as G if the flue System has been tested, and as O if not. This classification is followed by the minimum distance (in mm) to combustible material.

– The G test is a thermal shock of 1.000ºC during 30 minutes during which the System must endure and the temperature of combustible materials placed at the
declared distance must not exceed 100ºC at an ambient temperature of 20ºC.

– The systems with O classification have not passed this test, so they cannot be used for any installation where the products of combustion contain soots (solid
fuels, multifuels...). For low temperature applications, for instance room sealed boilers, where joints are used.

8- OTHER DECLARED CHARACTERISTICS:

The characteristics of the previous points must be indicated in all documents of CE marking
Hereinafter is a list of other characteristics that only appear in the DoP. (Declaration of Performance)

• Compressive strength (height for installation)

• Flow resistance of chimney sections fittings and terminals
• Minimum thermal resistance
• Flexural tensile strength
• Maximum distances between supports in non vertical installation
• Wind load resistance (maximum distances between fixing points and freestanding above the last one)
• Freeze thaw resistance
CE MARK according to EN 1856-1 / 2

CERTIFICATE & DoP

9- CERTIFICATE
Normally a chimney system is tested for the use
with different types of appliances, therefore
one system can achieve different CE
Designations.
These designations / models are shown in the CE
certificate.
The distance to combustible materials depends on
the diameter of the system. Therefore, one
model shows different distances according
to the diameter.

Jeremias systems are certified by the TÜV SÜD

laboratory in Munich, Germany, the most
recognized laboratory for this type of
testing
CE MARK according to EN 1856-1 / 2

CERTIFICATION AND DoP

10- DECLARATION OF PERFORMANCE DOP
The DoP is a document issued by the manufacturer
where all the detailed information about the test
results are summarized.
The certificate is the base for issuing the
correspondent DoP and both have the same
number
Its is compulsory to provide a formal DoP for the
system submittal.
Under others, following points are shown:
1. Compressive strength
2. Resistance to fire
3. Gas tightness/leakage
4. Flow resistance
5. Thermal resistance
6. Thermal shock resistance
7. Flexural tensile strength
8. Non vertical installation – maximum offset
9. Component subject to wind load- free standing height
10. Water and vapour diffusion resistance
11. Condensate penetration resistance
12. Corrosion resistance
13. Freeze thaw resistance
CE MARK according to EN 1856-1 / 2

PRODUCT LABELLING
11- COMPULSORY PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION AND LABELLING
