Simple lifting machines

A machine is a device, which utilizes the energy in
available form for doing some useful work.
 The machines are classified as.
Simple Machines
Compound Machines
Simple machine:-
A simple lifting machine may be defined as a device used
in lifting a heavy load (W) applied at one point by
applying comparatively smaller force called effort (P)
applied to another convenient point.
Compound machine:-
They consist of a number of simple machines e.g. printing
machines, grinding machines, etc.

The simple lifting machine can be studied in topic given

below:-
Wheel and axle (Simple and differential)
Weston’s differential Pulley block
Winch crabs (Single and Double purchase)
Basic concepts
 Load (W):- The resistance to be overcome
by a machine or thru weight to be lifted is
known as load.
 Effort (P):-The force applied to overcome
the resistance or to lift the load is known as
effort.
 Mechanical advantage (MA):-It is a ratio of
the load lifted by machine to the effort
applied to lift the load.
 Velocity ratio (V.R):-The ratio of the
distance moved by effort to the
corresponding distance moved by the Load.
 Input: - Input of a machine is the product of
the effort (p) and the distance through
which the effort moves (y).
 Efficiency: - The efficiency of a machine is
ratio of output to input of a machine and
it’s generally expressed as a percentage.
Simple Axle and Wheel :-
Simple axle and wheel is most commune machine
which is in use, till today, is the simple axle and
wheel used for drawing up water from well

The wheel and axle are shown in the figure is in

same shaft. A string is wound round the axle “A
“and carries the load W to be lifted. Effort p is
applied by another string wound round the wheel
“B” in the opposite directions; a downward motion
of effort p will raise the load W
D :-Diameter of the effort wheel (B)
D : - Diameter of the load axle (A)
W :- load lifted
P :- Effort applied to lift the load
V.R :- Distance moved by the effort=ad
Distance moved by the load ad
V.R :- D÷d
