of energ y h as assu med imp ortance and minimu m energ y p erformance stand ard s for d istrib u tion transformers
rig h t u p to 2 50 0 k V A 3 p h ase rating s as w ell as sing le p h ase h ig h v oltag e d istrib u tion transformers u p to 2 5 k V A
h as b een sp ecified in certain reg u lation. A need w as felt to alig n th e stand ard s IS 1180 (Part 1) and IS 1180
(Part 2 ) in terms of max imu m losses w ith th e op timu m minimu m energ y p erformance stand ard and also u p d ate
th e stand ard to tak e into accou nt of th e ex p erience g ained since th e last rev ision.

normativ e references h av e b een mad e to IS 2 0 2 6 w h ich is, th erefore, a necessary ad ju nct to th is stand ard .
I n th e p rep aration of th is stand ard , assistance h as b een d eriv ed from R EC Sp ecifications on d istrib u tion
transformers, R -A PD R P Tech nical Sp ecification for su ch transformers, B EE recommend ations for loss lev els of
3 star, 4 star and 5 star rated d istrib u tion transformers, G u id elines for Sp ecifications of Energ y Efficient O u td oor
Ty p e Th ree Ph ase and Sing le Ph ase D istrib u tion Transformers p u b lish ed b y CEA and CB I P M anu al on
Transformers, Pu b lication 317.
Th is stand ard recommend s mu ltip le rating w ith reg ard to Energ y Efficiency th at is, th ree energ y efficiency lev els:
lev el 1, lev el 2 and lev el 3 of transformers corresp ond ing to 3 star, 4 star and 5 star lab elled transformers resp ectiv ely ,
as p rescrib ed b y B EE. It is ex p ected th at transformers sh all conform to at least energ y efficiency lev el 1. In d u e
cou rse of time w ith imp rov ements in tech nolog y and materials, h ig h er lev els of energ y efficient transformers
sh all b e p rog ressiv ely u sed .
Th is stand ard (Part 1) is for d istrib u tion transformer filled w ith mineral oil. A s mineral oil is semi b io-d eg rad ab le
it is ex p ected th at in fu tu re from env ironmental consid erations, u se of N atu ral/Sy nth etic Ester O ils sh all increase.
Th is stand ard also allow s u se of su ch oils su b ject to ag reement b etw een u ser and su p p lier. W h en su fficient
