INTRODUCTION

Small Office Home Office (SOHO) is defined as a term that refers to the small or home office
environment and the business culture that surrounds it. It is often thought of as being the
smallest of small businesses. It is a privately owned and operated business or individuals who
are self-employed. SOHO is often characterized as being a small in both the size of the office
space and number of employees.

As it refers to the small business or

business-at-home user, this market
segment demands as much or more
than the large corporation. The small
business entrepreneur generally wants
the latest, greatest and fastest
equipment, and this market has always
benefited from high technology,
allowing it to compete on a level playing
ground with the bigger companies.

ß To understand human perceptions on quality of architectural space from a few aspects

(space area, colours, plane, form and so forth).

ß To calculate good taste related to interior design.

TASKS

Project 1A : Precedent Study (Notable Architects) (15%)

ß This is an individual task. You are required to find as much information on your
selected precedent architects as possible and present the findings to the class manually
or digitally in an A1 size poster.
ß Your presentation should also communicate links and strategies from the precedent
architects that could be effective and relevant for Project 1C : Small Office Home Office.
ß The poster should be a visual and graphic presentation illustrating the precedent
architect that will be incorporated into your future building design.
ß You will be evaluated on the thoroughness of your research and on the composition and
effectiveness of the presentation.

Project 1B : Case Study (Quality of Space & Circulation) (15%)

ß This is a group task. You are required to find as much information on your selected

the findings to the class manually in A1 size cartridge papers.
ß Your presentation should also communicate links and strategies from the interior spaces

ß You will be evaluated on the thoroughness of your research and on the composition and
effectiveness of the presentation.

Project 1C : Small Office Home Office (70%)

ß This is an individual task. The scenario is that, you are a young and recently graduated
architect starting your own practice. The constraints of finance are great and you would
have to set up your practice at home. Your parents have agreed to let you have one
space behind their house. You have an option to use an abandoned container measuring
approximately 6000 mm (length) x 3000 mm (width) x 3000 mm (height).
ß You are required to design the space of your dreams with the purposes for work,
entertain and live-in as well.
ß Because you have not developed a style or philosophy of your own yet, precedent study
of notable architects will be the basis for your design.
