Today’s topic: Continuation on Project Presentation

These tips of a successful project presentation reflect years of experiences and collective
discussions.

Order of tips is crucial and is part of a successful project presentation.

1. Tip #1 : Introduce/brief yourself.

2. Tip #2: Give a brief about your project / introduce your project.
3. Tip #3: Challenges and opportunities of project.
4. Tip #4: Concept / main ideas of project / project’s story

Revision of what do we mean by experience in Architecture?

3 types of people:

a. Person with more events – more experienced

b. Person with less events – less experienced
c. Person with more time – more experienced

In Architecture:

Time is represented by circulation.

Events are represented by different spaces.

Definitions of space vary from one person to another.

Approach to site is point A till you exit the site from the other side is point B.

To create a successful architectural experience, the line of spaces you are designing should
work along the circulation you are placing.

The more spaces - the more events I create.

Example:

Square DDS to studios square in JUST.

You will pass by a crowd of students and trees, making you enjoy the scene as you are
walking by as there are a lot of events occurring.
Rasha Al-Khateeb 07/12/2020

Even when you are walking through the corridor, you can see outdoor views from the glass
facade not making you feel of the time while crossing from point A to B.

However, same distance on the second floor while walking across the offices, you will not
face events like the ground floor.

Describe major circulation system in project:

a. Type
b. Space
c. What kinds of events that should happen in each space

To create a meaningful story, users should be exposed to positive events while circulating
through the spaces.

A space should serve a specific function and create particular events appropriate for the users.

2 circulation systems:

a. Major
b. Minor – no need for experience as much as in the major circulation system

*Some require more functionality than entertainment and events.

*There is no successful architectural project without thinking of the circulation system as a

major part of the design process, starting with the approach to the site (point A) till you exit.

*The circulation system is a space with events occurring, it is not a line but a zone and a
space like other functional spaces. You should think of the circulation system from the
early stages of your project planning.

NOW PROJECT PRESENTATION TIPS CONTINUATION…

Tip #4 continuation (Concept / main ideas of project / project’s story):

Example of a refused concept:

Where the student was designing a park that will make the users hate it and not come back.

This contradicts what Architects should do as our job is to design spaces to enhance human
delight (indoor and/or outdoor).

Human delight is defined as comfort by many architects.

Rasha Al-Khateeb 07/12/2020

But even comfort has multiple definitions:

a. Thermal comfort
b. Acoustic comfort
c. Building integrity
d. Lighting comfort
e. Spatial comfort

5. Tip #5: How you converted the concept to an architectural product?

And this is after explaining your concept and theoretical part of the project.
The process of converting the following to Architecture, physical spaces, and
circulation:
a. Theory
b. Goals
c. Objectives of project
d. Messages you want to deliver.
e. Promises as an architect.

To convince your audience with your project, after going through the goals of the
project, you need to show how you will fulfill these goals architecturally for
example by talking about the spatial organization of the project.

Does your project presentation coincide with your plans, diagrams, etc.…?

Do your project and concept follow the same path?

Your concept vs. actual work.

Example: 80% of the students do not succeed in tip 5.

*The whole project presentation should happen in a maximum duration of 15 minutes.

As after that, the audience will lose interest and attention.
