Why Should Vibration Measurement Engineers Worry
About ISO 10816?

The main target of condition monitoring and machinery protection systems is to ensure the health
and continuous operation of the plant machinery. For continuous monitoring and analysis of
machine vibrations, vibration measurement systems with vibration transducers are installed. Users
will require a reference to compare machine vibration to in order to assess the condition of each
machine. Based on a statistical analysis of historical data gathered by ISO TC 108, ISO 10816 gives a
reference such as permitted vibrations and alarm or trip conditions for diverse machinery.

ISO 10816-1: General Machines

ISO 10816-1 is a fundamental

document that lays out broad
criteria for measuring and
evaluating mechanical vibration
in non-rotating elements of
machines. The following are the
machine classifications:

ISO10816-2: Steam Turbine And Generators

ISO 10816-2 specifies the use of accelerometers

or velocity transducers to assess vibrations on
permanent elements such as bearing housings
of large land-based turbines. Generators with a
capacity of more than 50 MW and rotational
speeds ranging from 1500 to 3600 RPM

5
ISO10816-3: Critical Machines

ISO 10816-3 is primarily used to detect vibration in

industrial machinery, such as electro motors with a
power output of more than 15 kW and a speed range
of more than 500 rpm (120 RPM-15000RPM)on
stationary elements such as bearing housings,
utilizing accelerometers or velocity transducers

6
ISO10816-4: Gas Turbines

The ISO 10816-4 standard is primarily used to monitor vibration

in land-based gas turbines with a speed range of 3000 RPM to
20000 RPM utilizing accelerometers or velocity transducers on
fixed elements such as bearing housings and pedestals.

NOTE: These Values, which are zone A, B, and C's upper bounds
Should apply to radial vibration measurements on all bearing
housings or pedestals, as well as axial vibration measurements
on housings having an axial thrust bearing, when operating at
rated speed under steady-state conditions. Typical measurement
positions are depicted in this diagram.

ISO10816-5: Hydro Turbine – Group 1

This section of ISO 10816 provides guidance

for employing bearing housing vibration
evaluation criteria at the bearings, bearing
pedestals, or bearing housings of the main
machine sets in hydraulic power producing
and pumping plants under normal operating
conditions. Machine sets with speeds ranging
from 60 to 1800 r/min, shell or shoe type
sleeve bearings, and a main engine power of
1 MW or more are covered by ISO 10816-5.
The shaft line can be horizontal, vertical, or at
an arbitrary angle between these two
orientations.

ISO10816-5: Hydro Turbine – Group 2

This section of ISO 10816 provides guidance

for employing bearing housing vibration
evaluation criteria at the bearings, bearing
pedestals, or bearing housings of the main
machine sets in hydraulic power producing
and pumping plants under normal operating
conditions. Machine sets with speeds ranging
from 60 to 1800 r/min, shell or shoe type
sleeve bearings, and a main engine power of
1 MW or more are covered by ISO 10816-5.
The shaft line can be horizontal, vertical, or at
an arbitrary angle between these two
orientations.

ISO10816-5: Hydro Turbine – Group 4

This section of ISO 10816 provides guidance for

employing bearing housing vibration evaluation
criteria at the bearings, bearing pedestals, or
bearing housings of the main machine sets in
hydraulic power producing and pumping plants
under normal operating conditions. Machine
sets with speeds ranging from 60 to 1800 r/min,
shell or shoe type sleeve bearings, and a main
engine power of 1 MW or more are covered by
ISO 10816-5. The shaft line can be horizontal,
vertical, or at an arbitrary angle between these
two orientations.

ISO10816-5: Hydro Turbine – Group 3

This section of ISO 10816 provides

guidance for employing bearing
housing vibration evaluation
criteria at the bearings, bearing
pedestals, or bearing housings of
the main machine sets in hydraulic
power producing and pumping
plants under normal operating
conditions. Machine sets with
speeds ranging from 60 to 1800
r/min, shell or shoe type sleeve
bearings, and a main engine
power of 1 MW or more are
covered by ISO 10816-5. The shaft
line can be horizontal, vertical, or
at an arbitrary angle between
these two orientations. SOURCE: VIBSENS 11
ISO10816-6: Reciprocating Machinery
ISO 10816-6 provides the general conditions
and procedures for measuring and evaluating
vibration using measurements on reciprocating
machines' non-rotating and non-reciprocating
parts. It usually refers to reciprocating piston
machines with power ratings of more than 100
kW that are mounted firmly or resiliently.
Maritime propulsion engines, marine auxiliary
engines, engines functioning in diesel
generator sets, gas compressors, and engines
for diesel locomotives are all examples of
typical applications. Both operational
monitoring and acceptability testing are
covered by the broad evaluation criteria
offered. They're also employed to make sure
that the machine's vibrations don't impact the
equipment that's immediately attached to it.

ISO10816-7: Pump
ISO 10816-7 specifies how to assess vibration in
rotary pumps for industrial applications with a
nominal output of more than 1 kW. When
vibration measurements are taken on non-
rotating parts, it specifies the particular
requirements for vibration evaluation (bearing
housing vibration). It specifies how to analyze
the severity of vibration recorded on rotary
pump bearing housings in situ, as well as how
to conduct an acceptance test at the
manufacturer's test facility or in the plant.

ISO10816-8: Reciprocating Compressors

This section of ISO 10816

specifies the processes and
recommendations for
determining and classifying
mechanical vibration in
reciprocating compressor
systems. The vibration values are
specified primarily to classify
compressor system vibration and
to avoid fatigue problems with
reciprocating compressor system
parts, such as the foundation,
compressor, dampers, pipes, and
auxiliary equipment installed on
the compressor system.

The reciprocating compressor

systems covered by this section of
ISO 10816 include the following:
System types include horizontal,
vertical, V, W, and L-type
compressors. Constant and variable
speed compressors, compressors
driven by electric motors, gas, and
diesel engines, steam turbines, with
or without a gearbox, flexible or
rigid coupling, and dry running and
lubricated reciprocating
compressors.

turbines and their components. It covers WTs
with rated generator outputs greater than 100
kW but less than or equal to 3 MW, as well as the
