Assignment 2 Group-Learning Exercise-PROJECT WORK

MIS is a practice oriented course. It cannot be taught, but one has to learn by doing.
The Assignments are real life problems. Students must learn how to use modern
Information and Communication Technology) ICT to develop IT enabled support
systems for functional managers. This course will have two major practice exercises,
which every student must solve and learn who needs what Information Support
Systems and why?
Students must take exercises seriously. It counts 55% of the weight of the learning
assessment matrix. MIS students must demonstrate competency in using ICT to
support organizations’ business functions. The Mid-Term and End-Term examinations
will contain problems similar to Take-Home exercises.

Term Project (Empirical Research / Learning by Doing /Research):

The final requirement of the course is project work. It counts 10% of the weight of the
learning assessment matrix. This is a group assignment. Project work requires
extensive research and careful analysis. It inculcates out of classroom learning and
encourages students to analyze MIS requirements of selected organizations from the
specified Indian industry sectors as listed in Table 2.

Guidelines for Writing the Project Report [Max Pages = 10 (1+1+1 + 2X3 +Exhibits)]:
Each team should consider its written report as an "executive briefing." The body of the
report should provide a concise summary of the status quo, but should concentrate on
the conclusions and implications of the analysis your team has done. In the discussion
the conclusions and implications should be supported with theory and objectives of
management, your own logic, and evidence.
The project report will have three distinctive parts. The 1 st part will focus on Business
Process Analysis, the second part will focus on the IT enabling of the Business Process
and final part will focus on Implementation and execution strategy of the firm and its
implications.
Business Process (BP) Analysis

Business Process Analysis section of the project is to be a maximum of 2 pages (before


charts, drawings and exhibits). Identify entities of the Business Process and the
deliverables. Plus what data transaction takes place to deliver the outcomes of the
business process and finally what functions (processes are to be c0ompleted) and the
data to transmitted and stored. Equal balance should be given in the report to industry
analysis and competitive analysis. This report should focus on As-Is systems and
processes.
IT Enabling of the Business Process (BP)

IT enabling report section of the written report should be 2 pages (charts, drawings
and exhibits). The following stuffs should be included in your analysis:
 Report must identify and draw the Inputs, Throughput and Outputs (Diagram
Only). Report should depict Process Flow Diagram and Output Tables (No
description please).
 Report must mention what ICT technologies will to be used for the Inputs
and Throughputs. What would the Outputs / Outcomes and how the
outcome / out will be displayed and delivered. Report should highlight the
proposed Business Transaction Process (ie. Identify the data Model, The
Database and Networking Systems and Business Functions).
Execution Strategy

This part will illustrate how the organizations in question are using ICT systems to gain
business value and Competitive Advantage. It should be 2 pages (charts, drawings and
exhibits). This part of the report may contain some text. But must be brief and in bullet
points.
