SUBJECT: Updated Procedures for Checking Fuel Injection
Pump Static Timing
DESCRIPTION OF CONCERN
The timing pin housing with its plastic timing pin (part
number 2852515 for the assembly), 1, Figure 1, on
the rear engine cover was replaced by a new timing
pin housing (part number 2855287) and a special
service tool (part number 380002729), 1, Figure 2.
This new housing does not have the timing pin
installed in Production. The special service tool is a
metal timing pin, which is inserted into the housing
during the static timing adjustment procedure and
then removed for reuse in another engine.

To check the injection pump static timing using the


new tool with the new pin housing, follow this
procedure:

1. Remove the plug, 1, from the timing housing


located on the engine.
2. Use the timing pin tool to locate the engine
top-dead-center (TDC), following the procedure 1
described in the service manual.

To check the injection pump static timing on a machine
equipped with the older plastic pin and original
housing, use the following (“Drop-Valve”) procedure:

NOTE: Do not follow the procedure in the service
manual if the engine is equipped with the plastic pin 1
and original housing.

1. First, establish TDC, as follows:


" Use the engine turning tool (part number
380000988) to manually turn the engine
over, rotating the tonewheel, 1, until the 86062581
un-slotted section, 2, is at the top. This
positions the number one piston near TDC. 4
" Remove the number one cylinder valve cover.
" Verify that the engine is near TDC by
checking that the push rods move freely. If 1
the push rods are tight, it means that they are
holding the valves open. Use the engine
turning tool (part number 380000988) to
rotate the engine one full turn. 3
" Rotate the crankshaft backwards, from TDC,
about 20 degrees. This means counter- 2
clockwise (CCW) fan rotation, as viewed
from the fan end of the engine.
" The piston must be down the cylinder bore 86062582
far enough so as to not contact the intake
valve when it is depressed. 5
" Using the bolt provided with the tool, install
the valve gauge tool (part number
380001435), 1, onto the rocker arm shaft
bearing block, 2, until the valve, 3, is fully
depressed and the tool is seated on the
bearing block.

" Fabricate a pointed rod, 1, from a piece of


heavy wire.
" Attach the pointed rod to a solid object near
the belt pulley, 2. 2

" Use the pointed rod as a reference point, and
mark the pulley.
" Remove the valve gauge tool (part number
380001435), 1, Figure 5, and close the
intake valve.
" Continue to turn the engine in a clockwise
direction, for approximately 20 degrees, until 1
the piston is on its down cycle.
" Install the valve gauge tool (part number
380001435), 1, Figure 5, and open the number
one cylinder intake valve a second time.
" Turn the engine in a counterclockwise 86062584
direction, until the piston makes light contact
with the valve. 7
" Mark the belt pulley, 1, Figure 7, a second
time, using the rod as a reference.
" Measure between the marks and make a
third mark at mid-point, 1. When it is aligned
with the reference rod, this third mark
indicates TDC. Use it to time the pump with
the engine.

2. Check the static timing, as follows:


" Remove the valve gauge tool (part number
380001435), and allow the intake valve to
close.

" Locate the timing plug at the center of the
four injection lines on the injection pump, and
remove it with a 12 mm socket.

NOTE: None of the fuel injection lines need to be


removed.

" Replace the timing plug with the depth gauge 86062583
adapter (part number 380001084) and the
dial indicator (part number 380000228), 1, 9
Figure 9, in the pump.
" Pre-load the dial indicator approximately 2.5
mm.
" Turn the engine CCW until the dial indicator
needle just stops moving.
" Zero the dial indicator. 2
" Turn the engine clockwise until the TDC
mark, 1, lines up with the reference rod, 2.

" Note the timing pre-lift shown on the gauge,
1. The specifications are 1.10 to 1.20 mm for
naturally aspirated engines, and 0.95 to 1.05
mm for turbo-charged engines. 1
" If the pre-lift timing is out of specification,
refer to the static timing reset instructions,
which follow.

3. Reset the static timing, as follows:


" With the engine at TDC and the dial indicator
installed, loosen the three nuts, 1, which
secure the injection pump to the gear housing.

NOTE: Use a 38 cm (15 inch) socket extension, 1


minimum, to loosen the back bolt so that the dial
indicator reading will not be altered.

" Use the slots in the injection pump mount to


finely rotate the pump into the correct
position. For example, if the dial indicator 86062585
reading is 0.90 mm, advance the timing by
rotating the pump counterclockwise (up- 12
ward) until the specification is reached.
" Tighten the pump mounting nuts.

4. If the pre-lift specification cannot be reached by


rotating the pump, proceed as follows:
" Ensure that the gear housing nuts are tight.
" Ensure that the camshaft timing pin is not
engaged.
" Remove the drive gear access cover and
loosen the injection pump nut.

IMPORTANT: Do not loosen the gear from the


shaft yet.

" Turn the engine over until the pre-lift is 1.10 to


1.20 mm for naturally aspirated engines, and
0.95 to 1.05 mm for turbo-charged engines.
" Lock the pump by removing the spacer from
under the bolt head on the mounting flange.
" Using the injection pump drive gear puller
(part number 380000979), remove the
pump. Refer to the pump removal process in
the service manual.
" Turn the engine back to TDC.
" Use solvent to remove oil from the injection
pump driveshaft and gear tapers.

IMPORTANT: Tapers must be dried completely.

" Install the pump with the studs at the middle


of the slots.
" Snug the drive gear nut to less than 41 N#m (30
ft-lbs) to temporarily hold the gear to the shaft.
" Replace spacer under the lock bolt head.
" Ensure that the camshaft timing pin is not
engaged.
" Torque the drive gear nut to 89 to 95 N#m (66
to 70 ft-lbs).
" Verify that the pump pre-lift is 1.10 to 1.20
mm for naturally aspirated engines, and 0.95
to 1.05 mm for turbo-charged engines.
" Test the running and starting performance.

5. Timing pin housing replacement:


" After locating TDC using the Drop Valve
Method, loosen the two retaining screws, 1,
and remove the timing pin housing and
plastic pin, 2.
" Ensure that the crankshaft is at TDC.
" Install the new timing pin housing (part
number 2855287), using the special timing
pin tool (part number 380002729). 2
" Apply Loctite$ 242 locking compound to the
mounting screws and tighten them to 6 N#m
(4.4 ft-lb). 1
" Ensure that the special tool will slide easily into
and out of the locking position. If it does not
move freely, loosen the screws slightly and
move the housing until it does move freely.
" Retighten the screws.
" Remove the tool and install the plug.
