Chapter. No.1:

BUTTON, BUTTON
By: Richard Matheson
Questions/Answers:
Q. 1: Why did Arthur disagree (‫ )اتفاق نہ کرنا‬with his wife? *****
Ans. Arthur’s moral vision (‫ )اخالقی بصیرت‬was much better than that of his wife. He did not
like the idea of pushing the button and killing anybody for money. He called it a pure
murder. He knew that his wife was greedy for money, so he disagreed with her.

Q. 2: What was the message Norma received on pushing the button? Or What did
happen when Norma pressed the button? Or How was Arthur killed?*****
Ans. Soon after pushing the button, Norma received a phone call from Lenox Hill Hospital.

Ans. Norma wanted to improve her life style (‫)طرز زندگی کو بہتر بنانا‬.
ِ She wanted to have a trip
to Europe and buy a cottage (‫ )چھوٹا سا گھر‬on Island. She wanted better apartment, better
furniture and a car. For all these, they needed money and she kept on persuading her
husband to push the button.

Q. 4: Why did Mr. Steward continue persuading Norma?*****

(‫)خود غرضی والی فطرت‬. He was perhaps some commission agent. He was convinced of
her curiosity (‫ )اسکی دلچسپی کا یقین آگیا‬and greed when she called him in the afternoon. He
expected her to push the button.

Q. 5: Did Norma remain normal on hearing the news of the accident of her husband?
Or Why did Norma not remain normal on the news of her husband’s death? Or
What did Norma feel on hearing the news of accident?*****
Ans. Norma did not remain normal on hearing the news of the accident of her husband. She
felt unreal (‫ )جیسے یقین نہ آیا ہو‬when the voice informed her of her husband’s death. She
could hardly stand and walk. (‫)اس کے لئے کھڑا ہونا اور چلنا مشکل ہوگیا‬. She was shaking her
head without being aware of it.

Q.6: What is the significance (‫ )اہمیت‬of Arthur’s life insurance policy?*****

Ans. Arthur’s life insurance policy was the same amount (‫ )وہی رقم‬that was offered by Mr.
Steward for pushing the button. Its actual value ($ 25000) would be doubled in case of
the accidental death (‫)حادثاتی موت کی صورت اسی رقم نے دگنا ہو جانا تھا۔‬. The doubled money
was the real amount that was promised by Mr. Steward on pushing the button.

Q. 1: Why did the doctor call the girl by her first name?*****
