ESO 202A: Mechanics Of Solids

[3L-1T-0P-0A] (11 credits)

(Fall (I) semester)

Objective of the course: The course is concerned with the mechanics of rigid and
deformable solids in equilibrium. The main emphasis is on the process of constructing idealized
models to represent actual physical situations in engineering.

This course is a prerequisite to a number of professional courses in Civil, Mechanical and

Aerospace Engineering. The course may also found to be useful for understanding some
advanced courses in Material science and Engineering and Chemical Engineering, as well. This
clearly indicate to the immense significance of the course.

The concepts and principles taught in this course will be extremely useful for courses like
Structural Analysis, Steel Design and Concrete Design of structures for Civil Engineering
students. For Mechanical Engineering Students, this course will found to be useful for Design of
Machines, Vibrations and Dynamics. The Aerospace Engineering courses, such as Analysis of
Aerospace Structures and Design of Aerospace Structures will use the concepts taught in this
course. Lack of understanding in this course will therefore pose as an serious hindrance to
individuals aiming at mastering in any one of the above courses.

Other information and important notes

Three to four problems will be solved and discussed in each Tutorial class. The assigned
problems in each tutorial class will follow the theory covered in the previous lecture classes. A
few problems (two to three) will also be solved during the regular lecture hours. The students are
supposed to solve another four to five problems in their assignment, which will be assigned. The
solved assignment problems will be collected after the tutorial class and will be returned in the
subsequent tutorial class. Students are being advised to solve these problems of their own in
order to develop the ability of problem solving and improving understanding of the subject
matter, being taught.
If you do not attend the lectures, tutorials regularly and do not try to solve the problems
yourself, it is most likely that you will perform poorly in your exams and will be reflected in
terms of lower grades.
Therefore, I will advise to attend all the classes (be it lecture or tutorial) sincerely and put
efforts to solve some problems in each chapter.
