1 Use of Mobile Phone in Cars

Summary
In this report, we are applying the four quality control tools on the use of mobile phones in cars
in Bahrain. As we know that mobile phone is a basic need of people now a days but its excess
can cause a serious damage. These quality control tools are used to analyze the problem, study it
causes and effects and finding the best solution of the problem. We can also change our plan
after applying it. After applying this, we find the solution to decrease the rate of accidents in
Bahrain. We collect the data and construct it in the form of diagrams, charts and histograms. We
are using four QC tools which are given below.

 Affinity Diagram
 Relation Diagram
 Tree Diagram
 Process decision program chart

After applying these tools, we can decease the risk of accidents during travelling due to use of
mobile phones in cars.

3 Use of Mobile Phone in Cars

Use of mobile phones in cars

1.1 Introduction:
During driving of the cars, most of the drivers used mobile phone that have a potential to distract
drivers and crashes. The use of calling on the phone have made illegal due to the number of
accidents. Mobile phone is used to call someone or text someone. It can help us in a daily routine
to solve issues and convey our messages. As we know that the excess of everything is bad so
excess use of mobile is also some serious problems. One of the major problems, use of cells in
cars is causing serious damage regarding the life of human being.

For the safe driving, drivers must need to pay attention to the driving of cars. Minor mistake of
car driver and his distraction can lead to the accidents. This distraction is due to anything that
draws the driver attention from the road. According to the survey of National Highway Traffic
Administration in 1996, 20-30% of car accidents are due to drivers negligence. In the past
decade the use of mobile phones became popular. In 1984, when first mobile phone was in
operation use first time, number of phones users has grown dramatically. As we know, it is
necessary for everyone to have the mobile with itself but their potential impact on transportation
is sizable. During the use of mobile phones, drivers do not pay attention to the road safely. This
will increase the impact on the road safety. In Taiwan, the ownership of mobile phones has
reached 802 sets per 1000 persons at the end of 2000. Researches show that the drivers who are
using mobile phones have impaired driving performance.

Statistics analysis showed that the use of mobile phones for 50 minutes per month was associated
with 5.59 fold increasing risk in a accident. In 1995, the ban on mobile phones during the driving
of cars decreased 52% of cars accidents.

Use of Mobile Phones:

During driving of vehicles, there are many factors that distract the driver but use of mobile
phones is major concern. Due to the increased used of mobile phones, this behavior is increased
day by day in society according to the latest survey. The proportion of used mobile phones
increase by the last 10 years from 1 to 11%. This cause the drivers to take their eyes off the road,
their hands off the steering wheel and their minds off the mind and the surrounding situation.

This distraction is called cognitive distraction which have biggest effect on the society and
human beings and drivers behavior.

1.2 Body:
1.3 Quality Control Tools
There are different quality control tools by which we can find the solution of problem and
analyzing its cause and effects. We use four QC tools and apply it on the use of mobile phones in
cars which are as follows

 Affinity Diagram
 Relation Diagram
 Tree Diagram

1.3.1 Affinity Diagram:

Affinity diagram is a tool that gathers information on the topics by taking ideas, opinions and
issues. After getting information on topic, this diagram organized them into the groups by using
natural relationships. This is a basic method used to address the problems that people are facing
during their activity and it also effect on the society and surroundings. We can also used it for
future study to see it cause and effect after constructing the affinity diagram. This quality control
test deals with the topic that is use of mobile phones in a car in Bahrain. Firstly, we give all the
reasons and than divide and arrange it into groups.

Now all the reasons are divided into three main groups under the main headings.

Physical Distraction

Traffic Police do
not give punish for Visual Distraction Making calls
breaking the law

Figure 2.0: Affinity Diagram

In the above figures, we divide our reasons for the use of mobile phones into three groups in
which most important group is traffic monitoring. We can decrease the cause of accidents by
changing the traffic rules and strictly follow them by the drivers. This could only happen when
traffic police pay serious attention to this.

1.3.2 Relation Diagram:

Relation diagram is a quality control tool that is used to identify the cause and effect of the
problem which is under observation. We did the analysis about cause and effect of use of mobile
phones in car by using this tool diagram. This diagram is used to links the different situation and
find out its solution and implement it.

In this case, we analyzed that we can decrease the cause of accident due to this reasons by
training the drivers and traffic police. When we take serious attention and conduct fines on
violating the rules than this issue is resolved. When we are giving the training of drivers for
driving, we should also gives some ethics for driving because due to there little negligence most
of people lost their lives.

1.3.3 Tree Diagram:

Tree diagram is a easy tool to identify the problems and it is resembles and follow the hierarchy
of tasks. In this diagram, problem is defined and it divides into branches that makes a shape of
tree. It defines the solutions to the problems in a systematic manner.

1.3.4 Process decision program chart:

Process decision program chart is a new tool that identifies the failure in a plan which is under
development. This tool is applied when the plan is large and complex and when the plan is
highly effective and failure cost is high. By using this tool, we can also change and revise our
plan to avoid the problems. It is most likely a tree diagram with extra preventive diagrams.

1.4 Conclusion and Recommendations:

After applying the quality control tools, we analyzed that we can find the solutions of our
problems after study its effects and causes. Due to use of mobile phones in cars during driving,
most of the drivers behaves like irresponsible manner. Due to his negligence, most of the car
crashes. As the use of mobile is continuously increasing day by day, we shall take serious notice
to avoid the road accidents. After analysis, we analyzed that we can decrease the rate of crashes
when our traffic police takes serious actions and check the driving of people according to the
traffic rules. Mobile phones should completely banned during driving and during the training of
driving, we must give these instructions to the people. In this way, we can make ourselves safe
and sound during driving.
