Social Studies SBA Guideline

Task One

Statement of the Problem

1. For this task students you will first choose a topic/ social

problem then decided on ONE area of the social issue/topic

they will do their research on. This area can be any of the

following:

a) Causes/Reasons/Factors contributing to…..

b) Effects/Impacts

c) Measures/Solutions/Recommendations to solve the problem.

2. Student will next create their problem statement. This must be

written in question form showing the community, parish and

country in which you are studying the problem. It MUST have a

question mark at the end. Look carefully at the examples below.

3. Examples of Statement of the Problem:

a) What are the main causes of improper farming practices

among farmers in Cedar Grove, Portland, Jamaica?

b) What are the main effects of improper farming practices

among farmers in Cedar Grove, Portland, Jamaica?


c) What are the main factors which contribute to the smoking

among teenagers in Dalvey, St Thomas, Jamaica?

All students MUST do some research (reading) on the topic selected

for their SBA. Make use of sources such as the internet,

textbooks, gleaner articles and magazines. Record main points and

bibliographies for these sources. You will need them for use in the

SBA.

Research Questions

1. Now that you have your statement of the problem it is now time
for you to do your research questions. These will be your hidden
questions and will NOT be included in your Task 1. They will be
used later for your task four (4).

2. These questions must reflect the main area of the topic/problem


that you intent to research in your statement of the problem. For
example, the personal, social and economic reasons for the
problem OR the personal, social and economic effects of the
problem. There should be three or four research questions. The
final research question should be a recommendation that can
reduce/stem the problem. Look at the examples below:
