What’s in
Look at the given pictures. Answer the questions that follow. Write your
observations in your Music notebook.
1. What multimedia art form is seen in these pictures? What do you think these
pictures tell us?
2. How did media, specifically radio, television, video and recordings, play a role
in the development of these musical genres?
What’s New
The musical play is a popular and generally lighter form of musical drama than
the opera. The themes are usually more contemporary and the musical melodies are
more manageable by the average singer. The acting is less intense and dramatic and
the choreography and dance sequences provide entertaining breaks in the unfolding
plots.

What is It
Musicals are perhaps most widely associated with the Broadway plays in New
York City and West End Productions in London. The first major Broadway musical was
Showboat in 1927. Since then, musicals have presented many other themes: Siamese
royalty in the King and I, English aristocracy in My Fair Lady, Australian history in the
Sound of Music, medieval English Tragedy in Camelot and interracial gang rivalry and
romance in West Side Story. Other hit productions through the years have included
South Pacific, Cabaret, Les Misérables, Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, Cats,
Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Wicked and Mama Mia. Majority of these musicals
have also been into films, bringing them to much wider audiences the world over.

One Filipino artist who attained superstar status on both London’s West End and
Broadway is Lea Salonga. She is best known for her portrayal of Kim in Miss Saigon
a role for which she won the prestigious Tony Award for theater in the USA and the
Laurence Olivier Award in London. She also garnered the Drama Desk Award and
Outer Critics Circle Award for the same role in the USA. Salonga is the first Filipina to
have won so many international awards for a single role.
Miss Saigon, first opened at West End in London in 1989 and closed in 1994.
The London production became one of the Theater Royal’s (Drury Lane) longest-
running musicals. In addition, it was successfully produced in many cities around the
world. The USA production opened at the Broadway Theater in New York on April 11,
1991 and closed on January 28, 2001 after 4,092 performances. It was again re-
staged in London in the year 2014.

At 14 she played Angelita in "Dalagang Bukid", a zarzuela in 1917 and
popularized the song "Nabasag ang Banga". The show was made into a movie in
1919, the first Tagalog full length feature movie. She was so popular in her role as a
simple maid turned flirt in "Ang Kiri" that it was immortalized in the film "Mahiwagang
Binibini".
During the Japanese occupation, she did her patriotic duty by carrying
secret messages, often hidden in her hairdo, back and forth to Filipino guerillas. A
civic-minded artist, de la Rama led several groups not only in culture and arts, but in
politics as well, namely the Kaisahan ng Kababaihan sa Pilipinas, the Gagalangin
Ladies Association and the Red Cross Fund drive and became a zealous supporter
of such groups as the Confederation of Labor Organization, the Home Nursing
Association, and the Girl Scouts of the Philippines. Later, she supported various
groups like the PETA Babaylan and GABRIELA, by giving inspiring lectures. De la
Rama gave the best years of her life to the arts. She died on July 11, 1991.

NOLI ME TANGERE, THE MUSICAL
In 1996, Noli Me Tangere returned to the CCP, but this time as a musical play
composed by Ryan Cayabyab, with libretto by National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera.
It was staged at the CCP Little Theater from February 1-4, 1996 as a production of
Tanghalang Pilipino.
Noli Me Tangere the musical, closely follows the storyline of the original novel and the
opera. There are slight differences in the partitioning of the story into the different acts
and in the dramatization of the ending, as well as the music and libretto.
The musical play had its rerun in 2011-2012 during the 150th anniversary of Rizal’s
birth as part of Tanghalang Filipino silver anniversary celebration and again in 2013,
both times at the CCP Little Theater. Audie Gemora directed a young cast composed
of mainstream actors which include Mark Bautista and Gian Magdangal alternating
Crisostomo Ibarra, and Cris Villonco as Maria Clara.
