Fundamental Skills in Basketball

Basketball is a game that requires total body movement that is why players
should learn the fundamental skills.
At the end of the module, the student is expected to:
1. Identify the different skills involved in basketball
2. Understand the rules in playing basketball
3. Determine the hand signals used in a game of basketball
4. Apply the knowledge in basketball through simulation

Dribbling and Passing


Dribbling is defined as a basic skill done by pushing the ball repeatedly to the
floor. Tapping the ball is not allowed and the fingers control the ball.
Passing is defined as throwing of the ball towards a teammate with different
kinds of passing with the correct stance.

• Overhead pass – passing executed with two hands holding the ball on
top of the head.

• Hook pass – holding the ball with one hand and passing it overhead
and release in a hook manner.

Shooting
Shooting is an offensive and the most important skill in basketball. This is the
act of putting the ball inside the goal and this is the way of gaining points for
the team.

Types of Shots
• Jump shot – this is executed by shooting the ball while suspended in
the air, with both feet taken off from the floor in a vertical jump.

• Lay-up shot – this shot involves dribbling and running at a distance of


two steps under goal, holding the ball with one hand overhead before
releasing the shot.

• Dunk shot – This is also known as slam shot, executed with a forceful
shot above the rim.

Rules of the Game


1. Jump ball is done to start the game.
2. One player for each team is assigned to do the jump ball: this is usually
the tallest player or the center player.
3. Time starts when one of the player taps the ball as a sign that the ball is
on play.
4. Scoring is made after each sure goal. 2 points for every conversion, 1
point for every free throw awarded when there is a contact foul, and a 3-
point shot from a 15-foot area.

5. 12 minutes for every quarter and 4 quarters for a game. The team who
got the most number of scores wins the game.
6. A 24-second shot clock for the team to make a point.
7. 10 seconds for ball in bound and entering the opponent court.
