Week 5: Basketball

What is basketball?
• A ball game played by two opposing teams with 5
players each
• Players play for 40-48 minutes with two halves
• At the end of the given time, the team with the
highest points win

Week 5: Basketball

History of Basketball
• The game was invented the game in 1891 by Dr.
James Naismith.
• Dr. Luther Gullick had Naismith create a game similar
to other ball sports.
• The first game setup was two modified peach baskets
on two sides of a court and a volleyball.
• It was further developed into a true sport and
eventually included in the Olympics in 1936.

Materials and Equipment


• The Court- a flat surface with rubberized paint or
wood as floor material measuring 28m x 15m.
• Parts of the Court
• Center Line- divides the court into two parts
• Center Circle- placed on the middle of the
court measuring 3.6 m that serves as the area
for jump ball.
• Free Throw Line- a line extending from the
boundaries of the court 15 feet in front of the
backboard. This serves as the main area
designated for free throws.

• Parts of the Court
• Restricted Area- an are below the ring and the
board. 6 m apart and connected by a encircled
line measuring 3.6 m. Staying in this area for
more than 3 seconds results in a violation.

Materials and Equipment


• The Ring- a hoop of solid iron 45 cm in diameter, 20
mm thick and has a net 40 cm long.
• The Backboard-
• the ring is fixed on the backboard which is hung
3.05 m above the floor.
• The board must measure 1.8 m x 1.2 m x 0.3 m.
with the target area is 0.5 m x 0.45m on top of the
ring. The target area lines measure 5 cm thick.
• It must be secured firmly at a 90 degrees angle
with the lower edge 2.75 m from the floor and the
support post 40 cm beyond the bounds.

Footwork and Defensive Stance


• Footwork- the movement of feet while dribbling or
cutting through the defense of the opponent. This is
worked on to lessen faults during offensive and
defensive possessions.

Position and Roles


Basketball is a team sport with 5 players for every team.
Each active player is given a certain position to play and
roles that come along with that position. The positions
are the point guard, shooting guard, small forward,
power forward and the center. Each position also has its
own designated areas on the court.

The Point Guard


• Considered as the team’s “floor general”.
• Expected to create plays for other players.
• Over the past couple of years, a lot of point guards
have evolved from playmakers to full on scorers.
• Most of the time, the player with the shortest stature
plays this role.
• Skills point guards should possess are dribbling,
passing, long distance shooting, team coordination
and court vision

The Shooting Guard


• The player who is expected to make points and take
shots for the team.
• Expected to have swift dribbling skills like the point
guard and a much more efficient three point
shooting.
• Can be the shortest player on the court.
• Brings down the ball and make offensive plays and
shots.

The Small Forward


• The most versatile position.
• Many of basketball legends play this position.
• The shorter forward expected to possess the same
skillset as both the power forward and the two
guards.
• Can be an effective shooter from any point on the
court.

The Power Forward


• Commonly the second tallest player on the court.
• Possesses the same physical traits and strength of
the center but faster.
• Expected to get rebounds like the center and shoot
from a longer range than the center.
• Can play on post, mid-range or near the ring.

The Center
• Commonly the tallest and physically powerful player
on the court and must possess great amount of
athleticism.
• Expected to get rebounds and gain points from the
post. The center is also in charge of defensive plays
such as blocking the opponent’s shots and setting up
the team’s shooters.
• Can play on post, mid-range or near the ring just like
the power forward.
