INTRODUCTION:

History
Basketball was invented during the school year of 1891-92 at Springfield College in Springfield,
Massachusetts. Dr. James A. Naismith conceived the idea of attaching peach baskets at opposite
ends of the gym on the track that encircled the playing floor. This is where the height of 10 feet
for the basket was arrived at. Basketball derives its name from the original ball and basket used
in the first games. The game was introduced in YMCA’s across America and also to foreign
countries. Basketball became part of the Olympic Games in 1936.

Nature of the Game

Basketball is played by two teams of five players each. The object of the game is to score more
points than your opponent. The ball is passed, thrown, bounced, batted, or rolled from one
player to another. A player in possession of the ball must maintain contact with the floor with
one foot (pivot foot), unless the player is shooting, passing, or dribbling. Physical contact with
an opponent can result in a foul if the contact impedes the desired movement of the player.
Safety/Etiquette
 Clear the gymnasium and immediate playing area of movable obstructions and cover or pad
those obstructions that cannot be moved.
 No rough play or horseplay will be tolerated..
 Be careful/aware of the walls during practice or play.
 When possible make use of breakaway rims and pad the underside of the backboards.
 No loose or hanging jewelry should be worn by competitors. Remove rings, bracelets and
wristwatches.
 Only gym shoes with sufficient traction should be worn.
 Always be alert of play, even if you are standing on the sidelines.
 Whenever possible during the drills or game play, participants of common ability levels
should play against each other.
 Good sportsmanship should be displayed by all.
 Take periodic rest and water breaks.

Care of Equipment/Facilities
 Balls are stored in portable bins and should be carefully returned to the bins at the end of
each period of use. Do not kick the basketballs or throw them from a distance into the
storage bins.
 Balls should be checked often for proper inflation levels.
 Do not sit on or throw the basketballs against the gym walls.
 Do not hang on the rims or nets.
 The playing floor should be swept and cleaned regularly

LEARNING CONTENT:
Basketball is one of the most popular games around the world. If one has a basketball and a
hoop, they can play this game indoors as well as outdoors. If one is a professional, they will
definitely need most of the equipment to practice. But, if one is just starting out and learning a
few tricks of the trade, then the basic necessities will suffice their needs.
It is difficult to completely avoid injury in a contact sport like basketball, but using the right
protective equipment can help. We have a list of the safety equipment players should have to
help prevent or minimize game-related injuries.

Basketball is physically demanding and fast moving. The explosive energy of racing up and
down the court is taxing on leg muscles and ligaments. The contact nature of the sport ups the
risk of falls and collisions with other players. Appropriate protective gear can help to minimize
injury risks. Basketball is a contact sport that can result in injuries. The most common injuries
are due to falls, contact, awkward landings, abrupt changes in direction and being hit by the ball.
Using the right techniques and equipment for the sport can help prevent injury.
Basketball Training Equipment

The Ball

The most important thing for training is the ball. There are certain guidelines which one needs to
follow when buying a basketball. For practicing, one can play with a rubber ball. For
professional competitions, one needs to use an inflated ball made of leather.
Official size of a basketball is 29.6 to 30 inches in circumference for men’s game and 28.5
inches in circumference for women’s game. It should weight 18-22 ounces. When bounced off 6
feet from the floor, a well inflated ball should bounce 49 to 54 inches in height.

Shoes

One needs specialized shoes when playing

basketball. It should be able to give better
support to the ankle as compared to running
shoes. The basketball shoes should be high-
tipped shoes and provide extra comfort
during a game. These shoes are specially
designed to maintain high traction on the
basketball court.

Basketball Shooting Equipment

Basketball Ring
The hoop or basket is a horizontal metallic rim, circular in shape. This rim is attached to a net
and helps one score a point. The rim is mounted about 4 feet inside the baseline and 10 feet
above the court.

Basketball Court
The basketball court is the next important thing for shooting balls in this game. The court is
usually made of wooden floorboard. The court size is about 28m x 17m according to the
International standards. The National Basketball Association (NBA) regulation states the floor
dimension as 29m x 15m. The standard court is rectangular in shape and has baskets placed on
opposite ends.

Backboard

The backboard is the rectangular board

that is placed behind the rim. It helps give
better rebound to the ball. The backboard is
about 1800mm in size horizontally and
1050mm vertically. Many times, backboards
are made of acrylic, aluminum, steel or
glass.

Basketball Coaching Equipment

Uniforms

When one starts coaching a basketball team, the most important requirement for a team is to
have a uniform. This helps one differentiate teams from one another. A uniform consists of a
jersey (shirt), shorts, numbers on the front and back of the shirts for identification.
Shot Clock
The offense is allowed a maximum of 24 seconds to have a ball in hand before shooting. These
24 seconds are counted on the shot clock. If the offense fails to shoot a ball that hits the rim, they
will lose the possession of the ball to the other team.

Whistle

The coach or referee uses a whistle to indicate the start or end of a game. S/he can even use the
whistle to stop the play in the middle of a game. Whistle also helps to indicate fouls, timeout, or
out of bound balls to the players. In order to get the attention of the players, many times coaches
use the whistle to gather the players. It does not matter if one does not have every object
mentioned in the list above. All that is needed is a hoop, basketball and proper shoes to practice
the game. Hope the above information is helpful to those who are trying to hone their raw talent
for a professional career.

Protective Gears and Accessories

Protective gears and accessories include goggles, face masks, mouth guards, knee pads or brace,
headbands, arm sleeves, wristbands etc. Not all players wear necessarily all these things. They
use them only when they required them.

Couching Board

The Basketball Coaching Board is a reusable

board designed to teach team and apply great
game tactics and draw up the game winning play.

Face Mask

Basketball is intense and eye protection is essential, so a combination of comfort and protection
are the main things to look for in basketball goggles or basketball glasses.

Basketball Goggles
Those are protective masks. Basketball is very physical, players break their noses more often that
you would.

Mouth Guard

A mouthguard is a protective device for the mouth that covers the teeth and gums to prevent and
reduce injury to the teeth, arches, lips and gums. A mouthguard is most often used to prevent
injury in contact sports, as a treatment for bruxism or TMD, or as part of certain dental
procedures, such as tooth bleaching

Knee Pad
Knee pads or kneepads are protective gear worn on knees to protect them against impact injury
from falling to the ground or hitting an obstacle, or to provide padding for extended kneeling.

Arm Sleeves

Arm sleeves are perfect for taking the

chill off and adding support for those cool weather workouts.

SUMMARY:
Basketball continues to drive its audience off their seats. No wonder it has already landed its
name among the most famous sports ever. Basketball is so popular that almost every country in
Asia, Europe and the USA play the sport. Almost every individual knows how to play the sport. I
have seen people playing indoors and outdoors so many times, but it is mostly played outdoors
along the streets. Special sports gear, except for the ball and basket, is not even a requirement for
a person to play the game.

It is attainable and not expensive. Basketball is very much affordable. All you need is a ball and
a basketball court with a rim. The ball does not cost that much unless you would want to buy
expensive ones as used by the pros. You can have different options when it comes to the prices.
On the other hand, finding a basketball court is not a problem either. There are lots of schools
and communities who open their gates for individuals who want to play the game. When it
comes to sports gear, you do not need to buy expensive shoes or clothing. Just start to play the
game with the things you already use. Some people play the game with bare foot or slippers.
However, shoes are advisable for players to use to avoid any injuries. Feet play an essential role
in playing the game. Also, readily accessible. Like I said, basketball can be played anywhere. If
you are unable to utilize the courts in both public and private schools, there are a lot more social
communities who provide them. Some local governments try to establish public sports arenas for
everyone to enjoy. If you want to play, all you need to do is to go to the nearest basketball court
available in your community or your local basketball club.

You can play along with some other individuals is the most exciting part. Basketball enables you
to play with 5 or more friends all at the same time. Many other sports can be played only by two
or four individuals. In this case, you go tired and bored in waiting for your turn. In basketball,
you can have great chances of playing all the time. Easy to learn basketball fundamentals.
As long as you know how to dribble the ball and shoot, you can already play the basics of the
game. Dribbling is so easy to learn, you can even learn it by just watching how it is done.
Shooting is also easy to perform, although you need a lot of practice to hit it like the pros.
Simply throw the ball into the ring and watch it sink in. Another one is defense. Who says that
playing defense is difficult? If you are playing against a good player, maybe it is. However, its
fundamentals are easy to execute. You just have to stand in front of a player, use your body to
block his way, and use your arm in a legal way to prevent him from shooting or passing the ball.
Of course, what I am talking about are more on the fundamentals. It would be a little different
when you play a higher level of the basketball game. However, what I am trying to stress out is
that the skills that a person should learn to play basketball can be easily learned while having fun
at the same time.

Rules are simple. Recreational “at the park” Basketball has simple rules. In most cases, it is
limited to the basic dribbling rules and avoiding any form of hard body contact when a player is
in the act of shooting. These rules are very simple and easy to understand, and this is what makes
the sport so cool to play with your friends on warm evenings. It’s so much fun. Accessible
basketball camps or clinics. If you want to learn more about the sport and improve your
basketball skills, you can attend basketball camps or clinics. They are available and open for
everyone. These camps provide excellent tutors who can help you polish your shooting,
dribbling, and other basketball abilities. Before signing in on a clinic make sure to pay attention
to the overall skill level.

One of the exciting parts is that you can see it everywhere. It is televised worldwide. It is what
people see in televisions that inspire them to play the game. Many leagues are being covered by
many television sports channels such as the NBA, WNBA, collegiate basketball, Olympics, and
many other local basketball games. Even if you are not playing, you can still experience the
game by watching them in televisions from the comforts of your homes. Basketball provides a
whole lot of fun. You can socialize and meet other people with similar interests to yours. It is
always fun to meet like-minded people. I consider basketball popular not because everybody
plays it, but why everybody loves to play it. By thinking about the reasons above, you can easily
see why basketball is being considered to be a popular sport among the others.
