A number of U.S. colleges adopted the game between about 1893 and 1895. In 1934 the first college games were staged in
New York City's Madison Square Garden, and college basketball began to attract heightened interest. By the 1950s basketball had
become a major college sport, thus paving the way for a growth of interest in professional basketball.
The first pro league, the National Basketball League, was formed in 1898 to protect players from exploitation and to promote
a less rough game. This league only lasted five years before disbanding; its demise spawned a number of loosely organized
leagues throughout the northeastern United States. One of the first and greatest pro teams was the Original Celtics, organized
about 1915 in New York City. They played as many as 150 games a season and dominated basketball until 1936. The Harlem
Globetrotters, founded in 1927, a notable exhibition team, specializes in amusing court antics and expert ball handling.
NATURE OF THE GAME
Basketball is played by two teams of five players each. The object of the game is
to score more points than your opponent. The ball is passed, thrown, bounced, batted, or
rolled from one player to another. A player in possession of the ball must maintain
contact with the floor with one foot (pivot foot), unless the player is shooting, passing, or
dribbling. Physical contact with an opponent can result in a foul if the contact impedes
the desired movement of the player.
BASIC RULES OF THE GAME
BASKETBALL
1. Players: Five players per team on the floor at a time with unlimited substitutions. Usually players fill the standard positions of 2 forwards, 2 guards,
and 1 center. The names of these may be changed depending on the offense played.
2. Offense: Team or individual patterns of play that are used to get the ball into scoring position. There are two basic types of offensive attacks: the slow
deliberate attack and the fast break attack.
3. Defense: Players may choose to play either a man to man defense (person to person) or zone. In man to man each player is assigned a specific person
to guard/play defense on. In a zone defense, players are assigned a specified area to guard. The object of defense is to try to take the ball away from your
person or the person in your assigned zone area to force them to turn over the ball, or force them to take a low percentage shot.
5. Timeouts: Timeouts are one minute or 30 seconds in length and can be requested during a dead ball or anytime by the team in possession of the ball.
Each team gets a total of five timeouts for the entire game.
6. Timing:
• High school varsity games play 8 minute quarters.
• Time stops each time an official blows the whistle indicating a dead ball.
• There is one minute between quarters and 10 minutes at the half.
• A player has 10 seconds to shoot a free throw.
• A player has 5 seconds to inbound the ball.
• Running time is used in physical education and intramural situations. The clock does not stop on dead balls.
PLAY
1. The game is started with a jump ball in the center circle between two opponents.
2. A player is out of bounds when touching the floor on or outside the boundary line.
3. The ball is out of bounds when it touches a player who is out of bounds or any other person, the floor, or any
object on or outside a boundary, or the supports of the backboard.
4. If the ball is caused to go out of bounds by the last player touching it, it is awarded out of bounds for a throw-in
by the opposing team.
5. While the ball is alive, an offensive player cannot remain for more than 3 seconds in that part of the free-throw
lane between the end line, the free-throw line, and the free-throw lane lines
6. If an offensive ball handler, while in the front court, is closely guarded by the defense for 5 seconds, a violation is
called and the defense is awarded the ball
7. The team with the most score at the end of the playing time win.
FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

Court Dimensions
The size of the court depends on the playing level. The size of the court for NBA and College games
is 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. It is smaller for High School and Junior High.
• Remember BEEF (Balance,Elbow, Elbow, Follow Through) when shooting the ball.
• Be relaxed and concentrate on the basket.
• Know when you have a good shot and then take it.
• Be in proper balance when shooting the ball.
• Follow through on every shot you take.
• Jump naturally.
• “Up, hang, shoot!” is an easy way to remember this.
• Make sure you have an arc on every shot you take.
• Be relaxed when shooting free throws.
• Practice all of your shots.
DRIBBLING
DRIBBLING IN BASKETBALL IS A SKILL THAT YOU SHOULD MASTER. IT ALLOWS YOU TO MOVE AROUND THE COURT WHILE YOU’RE IN
POSSESSION OF THE BALL. IT IS A LEGAL METHOD THAT ALLOWS YOU TO ADVANCE WITH THE BALL AND MAKE A SCORE AS OPPOSED TO
THAT OF PASSING IT TO A TEAMMATE TO SHOOT IT FOR THE BASKET. THIS MOVE INVOLVES BOUNCING THE BALL OFF THE FLOOR WITH
YOUR HANDS AS YOU COVER THE FLOOR. THIS IS HOW IT’S DONE:
• Dribble the ball with hand and use only the tips of your finger in dribbling it.
• Employ the wrist and the forearm to push the ball while covering the court.
• Don’t involve the whole hand to avoid losing control of the ball.
• Don’t keep your fingers in touch with each other while dribbling.
• Dribble the ball in one side of your body and not right in front.
• While dribbling in one hand, use the other hand to drive your defender away from the ball.
PASSING
BASKETBALL IS A TEAM GAME. BY DEFINITION, THAT MEANS ALL PLAYERS ARE INVOLVED WITH THE PROCESS OF PLAYING THE GAME AND
SHOULD FUNCTION AS ONE. ONE OF THE PRIMARY SKILLS CREATED TO ACCOMPLISH THIS IS PASSING. IT IS A SKILL THAT MAXIMIZES THE
INVOLVEMENT OF ALL PLAYER IN SETTING UP A PLAY TO EARN SUCCESSFUL SHOTS AND EARN POINTS FOR THE WHOLE TEAM. TO LEARN

Basically, there are two types of pass: air pass and bounce pass. Air pass travels between players without hitting the floor.
Bounce pass is thrown to the floor so that it bounces to the intended receiver. Air passes include:
• chest pass
a pass that originates from the chest to the receiver’s chest level
• overhead pass
a pass that originates from the forehead.With this pass,
aim for your teammate's chin. Don’t bring the ball behind your head,
because it can get stolen and it takes a split-second longer to throw the pass.
• bounce pass
bouncing the ball off of the court into another player on his or her
team's hands.
REBOUNDING
REBOUNDING IS ONE OF THE MAJOR ASPECTS OF THE GAME. IT IS YOUR ABILITY TO JUMP WITH POWER TO GAIN POSSESSION OF THE BALL AS
IT BOUNCES TO THE RIM AFTER A FAILED SHOT BEFORE IT TOUCHES THE FLOOR. JUST HOW IMPORTANT IS REBOUNDING? WHENEVER YOU
GRAB A REBOUND, YOUR TEAM GAINS A CHANCE TO SHOOT AGAIN WHILE THE OTHER TEAM ACTUALLY LOSES IT. THE DIFFERENCE IS
