*Physical Education is "education through the physical". It aims to develop students’ physical competence and
knowledge of movement and safety, and their ability to use these to perform in a wide range of activities associated
with the development of an active and healthy lifestyle.
*Physical fitness is an important component to leading a healthy lifestyle.
Functions of Physical Education
1. Physical Development
Through carefully selected physical education activities, an individual who participates actively will develop and
maintain good health and high level of physical fitness.
2. Mental Development
develops his mental capacities as he learns the mechanics principles underlying movements, as he acquires
knowledge and understanding of the rules and strategies of the games and sports, and as he discovers ways of
improving his movements in basketball tournament.
Social Development
development of desirable social traits needed for adjustment to the social life in general.
Some worthwhile traits are:

3. Respects for the right of others 4. Sportsmanship
5. Honesty in the group activity or competition
4. Emotional Development
acquire pleasant attitudes, desirable habits, appreciations and values. The formal nature of physical activities
offers opportunities for self-expression and emotional mastery.
