LEGAL BASIS

• Article II, Section 17-It is a declared policy of the state to “give


priority to education, science and technology, arts, culture, and
sports to foster patriotism and nationalism, accelerate social
progress, and promote total human liberation and development”

• Likewise Article XIV on education, science and technology, arts,


culture and sports of Philippine Constitution supports the
teaching of Physical Education and Health in the curriculum to
wit:

• The state recognizes the vital role of the youth in nation-building and
shall promote and protect their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual,
and social well being (Sec.13)

• The State shall protect and promote the right to health of the people to a
balanced and healthful ecology in accord with the rhythm and harmony
of nature(Sec. 16)

• The State shall give priority to education, science and technology, arts,
culture, and sports to foster patriotism and nationalism, accelerate social
progress, and promote total human liberation and development. (Sec. 17)
PHILOSOPHY
• The philosophy underlying PHYSICAL EDUCATION utilizes principles that
encourages exploration and mastery of physical, mental and social skills.

• Generally in history PHYSICAL EDUCATION can be dated back in the


time of Greeks at 776 BC as their form of training for Greek soldiers.

• Then came the modern age where machines were present.
• In January 1, 1774 the first school lesson in PE was conducted.
• Gymnastics, hygiene and body development was the focus of PE
during 1820 onwards.
• During 1851 YMCA launched their first chapter of PE activities in
their school.
• At 1950 the number of institutes that offered PE in their curriculum
increased. Over 400 institutes.
• Students were encourage to join intramural sports.

• Dance was the most abundant activity in the history of PE in
the Philippines.
• Then we have Cock Fighting as part of history.
• 1905- baseball and track and field was introduced for the
boys.
• 1910- basketball was first introduce as a game for women.
• 1920- PE was required as a subject in the curriculum.
WHAT IS P.E. ?
• Activities that composes of sport activities, exercises,
dancing etc.
• It is a required subject in our curriculum.
• It is “education through the physical”.
• It is taught to students to develop their physical
competence and knowledge of movement and safety, and
their ability to use these to perform in a wide range of
activities associated with the development of an active and
healthy lifestyle. 
WHAT IS P.E. ?
• It also develops students’ confidence and generic skills,
especially those of collaboration, communication, creativity,
critical thinking and aesthetic appreciation. These, together
with the nurturing of positive values and attitudes in PE,
provide a good foundation for students’ lifelong and life-
wide learning.
WHAT IS P.E. ?
Physical Education performs three functions:
• Biological Function – enhancement of individuals growth
and development through body movement.
• Integrative Function – personality integration through
participation; provides transfer learning.
• Social Function – transmitting values and standards that are
consistent with the needs of the society.
Objectives of physical education
• Physical Development

Through the carefully selected physical education activities,


an individual who participates actively will develop and
maintain good health and high level of physical fitness. The
acquisition of physical skills can motivate an individual to
participate further in physical activities, hence, his growth
and development will be enhanced.

Participation in the physical education activities provides opportunities for the development of
desirable social traits needed for adjustment to the social life in general. Some worthwhile traits
are;
 friendliness
 cooperation
 respect for the rights of others
 good sportsmanship
 good leadership and followership
 honesty in group competition

The informal nature of physical education activities offers opportunities for self-
expression and emotional mastery. Examples of worthwhile emotional traits are:
 self-confidence
 self-control
 self-reliance
 courage
 determination

Through participation in physical education activities, the individual develops


his mental capacities as he learns the mechanical principles underlying
movement, as he acquires knowledge and understanding of rules and strategies
of games and sports, and as he discovers ways of improving his movements in
gymnastics and dance.
