Homework Assignment 5
Instructions:

• Unless otherwise stated. Report your results in SI units.

• Numerical answers should be in three significant figures.

• Make sure you provide appropriate units.

• Show your complete work.

• Material properties from the book are also available in Canvas, under Modules–
>Resources.

Problem 1 (20 points)

In the manufacturing demonstration class, we made laminated plate on a flat mold. What
were the manufacturing steps? Provide details of each step.

Problem 2 (40 points)

In the manufacturing demonstration class, two 315mm × 165mm laminates were manu-
factured using IM7/8552 carbon fiber-epoxy material system, with the following stack-up
configuration:

• Panel 1: [0/90/45/ − 45/ − 45/45/90/0]

• Panel 2: [0/90/45/ − 45/ − 45/90/45/0]

The angles are measure with respect to the long edge.

Using the lamina level material properties of IM7/8552 at room temperature given as:
E1 = 164GP a, E2 = 12GP a, ν12 = 0.316, G12 = 4.6GP a,
α1 = −0.9 × 10−6 /◦ C, α2 = 25 × 10−6 /◦ C
Ply thickness = 0.13mm.

Answer the following:

(a) Calculate and compare the laminate engineering constants for the two panels. Are
they the same for both panels? Explain your answer.
(b) Plot the cure induced warpage in both the panels. The cure cycle is shown in figure
1. The stress-free temperature is assumes to be 180◦ C. Show all steps.

The basic codes necessary for calculations have been provided under Module–>Codes.

Problem 3 (40 points)

Consider a glass/epoxy laminate [45/-45/45/-45]. Each ply is 1.25mm thick and the fol-
lowing material properties:
E1 = 40GP a, E2 = 6GP a, ν12 = 0.25, G12 = 4.0GP a,
α1 = 8 × 10−6 /◦ C, α2 = 20 × 10−6 /◦ C

The laminate is cured at a temperature of 125°C and then brought down to ambient
temperature of 25°C. Estimate local residual strains (ε1 , ε2 , γ12 ) at each ply after curing.
Show all steps.
