A Rational Theory of Cancer - by Dr. Marc Swanepoel

The orthodox theory of cancer is that it results from the mutations in the genes of
normal cells which, in turn, are caused by various factors including environmental
carcinogens. The problem with this theory is that there is a lot of research showing
that gene mutation is neither necessary nor sufficient to bring about cancer.
However, Nobel Prize winner Otto Warburg already showed as early as 1924 that in
cancer cells the production of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) better known as cellular
energy, is disrupted. He incorrectly concluded that it was due to a STRUCTURAL
defect in cellular mitochondria, the main source of ATP production. It took another 60
years before it was shown that cancer was due to a FUNCTIONAL defect in the
mitochondria. This change in the function of the mitochondria is most likely due to the
depletion of the main antioxidant in the body – glutathione – as a result of lifestyle
situations and toxins. Under normal conditions (e.g. 200 years ago), our glutathione
levels were adequate to handle the toxins that we encountered on a daily basis.
Today, however, we are bombarded with hundreds of thousands of environmental
toxins which, combined with the products of our own metabolic processes (including
stress), can deplete our glutathione levels over time. The cells then suffer a situation
known as 'oxidative stress' during which they fail to produce adequate amounts of
ATP via the normal process of OXIDATIVE PHOSPHORYLATION. Chronic oxidative
stress leads to a defense mechanism of affected cells which convert from
mitochondrial production of ATP, using oxygen, to the less efficient production of
ATP, either by fermentation of glucose in the cytoplasm, or through the fermentation
of glutamine in the mitochondria. The energy deprived cells become 'cancer' cells.
Subsequently, gene mutations in some cells can take place (which led to the
incorrect orthodox theory of cancer as a process of chance mutations).  A further
consequence of glutathione depletion and chronic oxidative stress is that the
hydrogen bonds that connect the base pairs (thymine-adenine or cytosine-guanine)
in the double helical DNA 'ladder' become weakened, allowing certain enzymes to
initiate the split of the DNA that then leads to the consequent cell division - a
characteristic of cancer. The initial discovery of the weak hydrogen bonds was made
by Dr Mirko Beljanski, a Yugoslavian researcher who worked at the Pasteur Institute
in France for nearly 30 years and for a number of years thereafter at a private
laboratory. He also discovered that the alkaloids in certain botanicals could
strengthen the weakened hydrogen bonds. The two herbal substances discovered by
Beljanski that contain the required alkaloids are Pao Pereira* and Rauwolfia
Vomitoria**.

In order to reverse the cancer process, THREE steps are thus necessary:
(1) To increase the depleted glutathione levels that caused the 'oxidative stress'
situation in the first place.
(2) To strengthen the weakened hydrogen bonds in the DNA double helix structure
which are responsible for the rapid cell division in cancer.

(3) To starve the cancer cells.

No (1) above can be achieved by taking the oleander mixtures plus some additional
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC). One’s body can use cysteine to synthesize glutathione.
There is also a possibility that the oleander strengthens the Hydrogen bonds of the
DNA in cancer cells. This will explain some of its anti-cancer action. The oleander

No (3) above can be achieved by cutting off the cancer’s access to both glucose and
glutamine (ALL cancer cells need these in order to produce ATP). This method is
very effective and it can be combined with options (1) and (2) above BUT it is quite
difficult to follow because it needs a lot of discipline and, in some instances, medical
supervision. One has to follow a very strict RESTRICTED KETOGENIC DIET (Dr
Thomas N Seyfried covers the RKD in detail in his book ‘Cancer as a Metabolic

It is important to note that (2) and (3) above are really SYMPTOMATIC treatments of
cancer whereas (1) above goes to the root cause of the problem. However, while one
is addressing the depleted glutathione levels, it is wise to slow down the
growth/spread of the cancer.

*Pao Pereira (Geissospermum vellosii) is an indigenous tree from the Amazon

rainforest. The extract from the inner bark seems to effectively suppress the
proliferation of HIV, herpes viruses, cancer and leukemia cells.  Alkaloids from the
stem bark of Pao Pereira possess a variety of therapeutic properties including
antimalarial activities, activity as a sexual stimulant and inhibition of the proliferation
of HIV and herpes viruses. Bark extracts from Pao Pereirai, enriched in alpha-
carboline alkaloids have significant anticancer activities in certain preclinical models;
they suppress prostate cancer cells.

One of the constituents of Pao Pereira is flavopereirine, a small molecule that is able
to cross the blood brain barrier, thus giving it promise in the treatment of brain tumors
as well against a wide range of cancers. . Flavopereirine also exerts a selective
inhibition action on viral HIV infection, particularly in patients infected by HIV-1.
**Rauvolfia vomitoria is a shrub or small tree up to 8 m. Older parts of the plant
contain no latex. The generic name Rauvolfia (sometimes mis-spelt Rauwolfia),
commemorates a 16th century German physician, Leonhart Rauvolf, who travelled
widely to collect medicinal plants. The specific epithet vomitoria refers to the
purgative and emetic properties of the bark. Rauwolfia vomitoria is reported to
combat the interference of aggressive and toxic substances, have a protective effect
on cells, and promote healthy cellular regulation. A rodent study reported in the
February edition of the North American Journal of Medical Science indicated that
Rauwolfia vomitoria improved immunity and hematology.

OLEANDER MODE OF ACTION

In my opinion the mode of action of the water extract of oleander is NOT primarily via
the cardiac glycosides like oleandrin that remain in relative small amounts even after
filtration. A lot of research has been done on the anti-cancer effect of oleandrin and
other glycosides and this is normally taken as the reason why it works against
cancer.  However, it is important to know that the raw oleander plant contains at least
1% ursolic acid and the hot water extract can contain more than 2%. The ursolic acid
increases glutathione levels in the body substantially and this, in turn, can reverse the
disrupted stage V of the Oxidative Phosphorylation (OXPHOS) system in the
mitochondria. It is this disruption of ATP (cellular energy) production which causes
cells to revert to a much more primitive way of producing energy - enzymatic ATP
production through aerobic glycolysis in the cytoplasm - a process that converts
normal cells to cancer cells. It is also the reason why most cancer protocols include
Selenium, NAC and other glutathione promoting substances. The minute quantities of
oleandrin work a bit like intracellular "chemo'' that can slow down or even destroy the
tumor(s), whereas the ursolic acid and the other glutathione promoters go to the
actual root of the problem. A good place to start reading if one wants to understand
this theory of cancer, is Dr Heinrich Kremer's book "The Silent Revolution in Cancer
and AIDS Medicine".

The oleander may also be involved in strengthening the hydrogen bonds in the base
pairs of the DNA in cancer cells. As per the work of Dr Beljanski, these hydrogen
bonds are weakened in all cancer cells. Dr Beljanski found that the alkaloids in
certain herbal substances can strengthen these bonds.
