Introduction

In the modern age of digitalization, people can interact with art in many shapes and

dimensions. Creative works are no longer only restricted to the museums like they used to be in

the early and mid-20th Century. Over the years, various generations of artists have tried to

incorporate creativity and art into the ever-changing digital space. This is evident in movies,

music production, painting, 3D modeling, and CG productions. This paper explores the future of

artwork in line with the vast innovations, including VR, AR, and 3D modeling, and how these will

affect human interaction with art.

The Evolution of Art in the 20th Century

Art encompasses various human practices involving creative expression, storytelling, and

cultural participation. People from different cultures have different ways of life, which partially

informs artwork's variabilities. Artwork traverses diverse and plural modes of thinking, acting,

and being in all possible media. Art has transcended the various generations of people through

style changes, innovation, and other intricate forms through deliberate training and theorizing

within a specific tradition. To some people, art has been a journey to share cultural

experiences, and forge individual fantasies and identities, while transmitting values, ideas,

judgments, or even enshrinement of spiritual meanings. Art has existed in primary forms,

namely visual arts, literary arts, performing arts, and culinary arts. All these do not have a

defined formula, even though due to training and inheritance of culture, patterns have formed

around skills and imagination that inform the production of objects, performances, and the

construction of new spaces and environments.

In the 20th century, there was tremendous growth in various sects of artwork, including

painting, music, theater, sculpture, cinema, architecture, and literature. When it comes to the

evolution of art, people tend to be biased about what they can see, touch and hear. This

explains why much focus on the growth of artwork in the previous centuries has been inclined

mostly toward visual arts – including architecture, ceramics, drawings, filmmaking, painting,

photography, and sculpting. In terms of popularity, literal arts, including drama and fiction,

came firmly in the first runner’s position. The element of open creativity in arts adds to its

immense power to command a large audience, as it carries something for almost everyone at

the end of the day. What artists in the 20th century mainly endeavored in various fields of arts

was diversity and uniqueness. Media transition from traditional to digital forms is also a

significant milestone in the consumption and accessibility of multiple artworks made in the

previous century.

Audio-visual and performing arts found a new audience online through the invention of

broadcasting technology on commercial television. This followed the story of TV in the 1930s.

With new media radio frequencies, arts had to reform to fit the new ways of consumption, and

storage in digital formats was the next significant milestone. In the mid-20th century, IBM

announced the invention of a disk drive, the IBM 1311, the first of its kind, which has evolved

through the ages into cloud storage.

The invention of the television has had a particularly impactful cause on visual and sound

artists. Television made its official debut in 1939 at the New York World’s Fair but was delayed

by WWII. The long wait came to pass, and people worldwide were exhilarated to see what this

new technology could do with the promise to bring moving pictures and synchronized sounds

to every room across America. Once the war was over, the contract was honored, and the

consumers’ interest in the new technology superseded the expectations of its boosters upon

re-introduction in 1946. Today in America and Europe, 98% of homesteads have access to

television, and an average person spends more than 30 hours per week watching the programs.

The Scope of Modern Art

Today, art cannot only be created digitally but can also be stored, manipulated, and consumed

on digital media. The world has transformed from ancient hand-drawn hieroglyphics to the

creation of digital non-fungible tokens. A multidisciplinary form of artwork has emerged with

the evolution of technology that enables the combining of various categories of art in a singular

environment. For instance, collectors do not need to visit museums or exhibitions to make their

purchases, but they can now happen in virtual spaces like the Metaverse. These days, you could

be selling an NFT while listening to your favorite music, streaming your favorite movies, or

playing a video game in virtual environments.

Modernization in artwork did not stop at the invention of the television because with a multi-

channel medium for consumption, more content needed to be created and given airspace.

Modern TVs, computers, and mobile devices complement each other in art creation, storage,

exchange, and consumption. The internet and the internet of things have bolstered the efforts

to modernize artwork by infinity. Creativity is endless and the internet inspires all the steps of

art development, experience, and expansion of the same.
