Oakland Cemetery’s Summer Author Talk Series aims to introduce audiences to complex histories of
Atlanta. The event will feature Cathy J. Kaemmerlan, author of The Historic Oakland Cemetery of Atlanta:
Speaking Stones; Karcheik Sims-Alvarado, author of Atlanta and the Civil Rights Movement; and Mark
Pifer, author of Hidden History of Old Atlanta. Each author focuses on key elements of the rich histories of
Atlanta and focuses on new perspectives on the role of Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta’s past.

The Historic Oakland Foundation partners with the City of Atlanta to preserve, restore, enhance, and
share Oakland Cemetery with the public as an important island of tranquility in the heart of the city. By
opening our gates to the public, Oakland Cemetery connects people and communities to encourage
understanding and inspire hope, especially through times of change. Our missions align as Oakland
Cemetery also aims to present the humanities through the lens of history in order to engage all ages and
backgrounds to explore what shapes us as individuals and binds us together as Georgians.

Project Narrative

Describe the project’s events and activities.
Please focus this description on the activities that will be supported directly by Georgia Humanities grant funds. Address the following
questions: What is the need for this project? What activities and events will the project include? Are the project’s events and activities
free and open to the public? Response limited to 4,500 characters.

Historic Oakland Cemetery Foundation requests support to implement a new 2021 Summer
Author Talk, which will bring forth discussion of Atlanta histories in relation to the current social
climate in an open, empathetic manner. Each author specializes in varying fields of history,
which will allow for a diverse arrangement of conversation. Authors will focus their discussions
in collaboration with Oakland Cemetery to provide context for Oakland’s evolving architecture
and landscape styles that evoke a sense of a cemetery and a city evolving over time. The goal
of this event strives to increase awareness on the growth of Oakland Cemetery throughout
Atlanta’s history, and reflect specifically on the original six acres of the cemetery, the historic
African American burial grounds, and Potters Field to bring awareness to those voices that have
been lost throughout time. Cathy J. Kaemmerlen, author of The Historic Oakland Cemetery of
Atlanta: Speaking Stones, explores the tales behind many of the cemetery's notable figures,
including Margaret Mitchell, Bobby Jones and the Rich brothers, by illuminating cemetery
stones as witnesses to what has appeared in the past. Karcheik Sims-Alvarado, author of
Atlanta and the Civil Rights Movement, discusses the African American role as key protagonists
in the rich and expansive narrative of American social protest. Mark Pifer, author of Hidden
History of Old Atlanta, discusses the rich history prior to the growth of Atlanta, including
forgotten details from African American immigrant struggles, while noting modern locations
bursting with tales that predate the city we know and love. The authors chosen for the event dial
in on Atlanta’s important pasts and how we perceive that past today. Students in the Master’s
program of Public History at the University of West Georgia will be present as volunteers to
facilitate further discussion in place of humanities scholars during Cathy Kaemmerlen and Mark
Pifer’s discussion days. Books will be available on Oakland Cemetery’s website for purchase.
Each event will include an introduction to the author, who will then discuss relevant themes of
their text, and allow for Q&A at the Bell Tower Porte Cochere. Following the discussion, staff of
Oakland and the author will guide tours throughout the applicable grounds in relation to the
author’s text. Oakland Cemetery aims to keep the project free to the general public, but keep
spaces limited in conjunction with COVID-19 protocol.

What is the project’s COVID-19 contingency plan?


If the proposed project includes in-person activities and events, how will the project adapt/change course if public health circumstances
pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic make in-person activities impracticable? Can the project transition to a virtual or digital format?

The Historic Oakland Cemetery Foundation has been working with state and local health officials in
order to limit the spread of COVID-19 on Oakland Cemetery grounds. As vaccination spreads and
the city of Atlanta begins to safely implement opening standards for businesses and events under
COVID-19, Oakland Cemetery will limit the number of patrons at a time to reduce transmission risk,
modify layout and seating in order to distance individuals, and provide sanitation stations for usage.
Oakland Cemetery will also provide masks if an individual needs, and maintain a scheduled
sanitation prior to the event and after.

In the event that COVID-19 makes in-person activities impractical, Oakland Cemetery will shift the
Author Talk event to a completely online base via Zoom, and implement the use of presentation
slides, media, etc., in order to convey the ideas discussed throughout the event.

How do the humanities inform this project?

questions significant at this moment? How will this project connect the research and knowledge of humanities scholars with the public?

Each author discussion works in conjunction with the humanities discipline by orienting
discussion through historical interpretation; thus, the study and application of each author’s
written work and the interpretation held at Oakland Cemetery grounds focuses on the human
environment with attention to Atlanta’s diverse heritage, traditions, and history. The focus on
Oakland Cemetery and Atlanta’s diverse pasts illustrates the diverse and complex cultural and
sociopolitical climate, which is also reflected in today’s current events. This project aims to
connect the research and knowledge of humanities scholars with the general public by
highlighting the parallelism between modern day and past, and to generate thought of progress.

Describe the intended audience(s) and desired audience reaction to this project.
Who is this project designed to reach? If your organization has an established audience base, how will this project attract new
audiences? What do you hope the project’s audience(s) will learn, experience, or gain as a result of this project? Responses limited to

The Summer Author Talks are designed to reach a multitude of individuals of varying
backgrounds, but will focus on obtaining new audiences through various forms of marketing to
push a diverse outreach of guests. Members of Oakland Cemetery’s membership program are
encouraged to join, as well. This project aims to educate audiences with more insight on
Georgia’s intricate past, and allow for guests to consider the circumstances of Georgia’s past in
conjunction with Georgia’s present in order to consider progression for equality.

Humanities Scholars

(if applicable), a brief biography for each scholar, and the specific ways the scholar(s) will inform the project. Please do not exceed

The first guest speaker is Cathy J. Kaemmerlen, who is a revered Georgia storyteller and serves
as a member of the National Storytelling Association and Southern Order of Storytellers. As a
writer drawn to history, Kaemmerlen used her experience in drama and choreography while
researching and writing over twenty historical performance pieces. Her work, The Historic
Oakland Cemetery of Atlanta: Speaking Stones will open discussion for many of the well-known
figures of Oakland Cemetery in conjunction to the unnamed with the participation of Oakland
Cemetery volunteers.

The second guest speaker is Dr. Karcheik Sims-Alvarado, who has studied the history and culture
of African Americans throughout the Black Atlantic World for nearly 20 years. Dr. Sims-Alvarado
is also the CEO of Preserve Black Atlanta, a non profit 501(c)(3) dedicated to identifying,
recording, and preserving African-American history and culture, and has developed a model for
utilizing historical and cultural assets as a catalyst for economic and community development.
She has worked with some of Atlanta’s leading institutions: the National Center for Civil and
Human Rights, Atlanta History Center, Herndon Home Museum, Central Atlanta Progress, and
Atlanta BeltLine Inc. Her portion of the event will focus on Oakland Cemetery’s historic African
American burial grounds.

The final speaker, author Mark Pifer, is a local writer of Southern history and has worked previously
with the Dekalb History Center regarding his work. Pifer’s portion will focus on forgotten details
from the struggles of African Americans and new immigrants and Oakland Cemetery’s Potter’s
Field — where people who could not afford to be buried on a private lot were buried prior to
1900 at the city’s expense.

Publicity and Marketing


What are your plans to publicize and promote the project? How will the publicity and marketing plan help reach the project’s desired
audience(s)? Responses limited to 1,500 characters.

Oakland Cemetery aims to promote these events by producing well-branded events and
focusing on community outreach and strong relationships with local neighborhoods. Our
strategic marketing team will post via sources such as Eventbrite in order to get a headcount,
and also promote ads on social media sites such as Instagram and Facebook for a small fee.
Flyers will be printed in small portions to be distributed to local businesses and universities to
bring awareness to the event. Tickets must be obtained prior to arrival (for free) in order to keep
audience level at Covid-19 standards. Oakland will also produce vinyl banners and signage to
display the events throughout the season on corners of Memorial Drive and Boulevard in Atlanta
for street view, and along brick fencing surrounding the cemetery entrances.

Author confirmation and facility arrangements will begin three months out to the first projected
date. Social media advertising will begin two months from the first projected date of the event.
Oakland Cemetery staff will begin confirming travel arrangements with authors if needed,
primarily hotel stays and land travel to and from the event, one month from the first projected
date of the event. All equipment rental needed for each event will be confirmed two weeks prior
to the event.

Evaluation and Outcomes


What are the goals and intended outcomes of this project? Describe the methods you will use to evaluate your project, and how you will
determine if the project was successful. Responses limited to 1,500 characters.

The goals and intended outcomes of this project are to not only raise awareness of the varying,
unspoken histories of Georgia, but to also expand awareness of Oakland through more consistent and
frequent external marketing in order to diversify attendance, volunteer base, and financial support.
We will evaluate our methods by keeping an open discussion with our attendees, volunteers, and also
submit a survey after each event to the emails provided by attendees. Oakland’s marketing and event
planning team will conduct strategy to monitor social media activity, keeping track of check-ins per
each event in order to determine whether events maximize occupancy, determine speaker engagement
during each session, and count the number of returning attendees.
