Quarter 1- Module No. 4: The various 21st Century Literary Genres and
the Ones from the Earlier Genres/ Period Citing their Elements,
Structures and Tradition
OVERVIEW:
In Europe, essay was first introduced by the French author Michel de
Montaigne. It literally means “attempt.” It was later considered as a literary genre
in Western countries; however, it was already during the dawn of Spanish
colonization that it was recognized as an important genre in the Philippines. Long
before Filipino authors became aware of this, only Spanish friars were skilled with
this type of writing.
Later on, Filipino writers adopted this literary form. Notable of these
Filipino essayist are Tomas Pinpin, who wrote Librong Pag aaralan nang manga
Tagalog ng Uicang Castila and Father Modesto de Castro’s Platicas Doctrinales.
During the revolution, many reformists like Bonifacio, Burgos and Rizal wrote
political essays to raise awareness among Filipinos of the abuse done by the
colonizers.
The essay development continued after the revolution and evolved into a
major form of literature as the Americans occupied the Philippines and introduced
its educational system. The essay has become more personal and less formal.
Some writers experimented with it, shifting to poetic and narrative technique.
Writers who took the centre stage during the American era are Nick Joaquin , S,P.

Gonzales, and etc. whose works not only endured but also put the essay to its highest
level as a genre. And even at the suppression of press freedom during the martial law, the
essay continued to be a potent weapon of writers who decry the injustices they both
experienced or witnessed in the Philippines.
The overthrow of the Marcos regime ushered in the regrowth of press freedom.
Once again, the essay has flourished and it took a new form like creative nonfiction.
More, writers explored broader topics like of human concern like nationalism, the arts,
and etc.
Indeed the essay has come a long way to its development from Spanish period
through contemporary and it has flourished since and done its purpose as a means of
personal and social change.

WHAT IS IT
People say that a woman’s hair is the crown of her beauty. That’s why we can see these days
many women checking their hair every time they had a chance to do so. But what people don’t realize is
that the hair of a person shows not only his or her good looks, but it also shows the person’s inner
personality, if we would just look beyond.
It is said that when people see you as being a neat and clean person, they would also see a
person who is living a clean life, and if people see you as a grubby one, they may think that you don’t
care whether you live a pure life or not. It sounds like the given maxims are not entirely true, but what
is true is what is written in the Bible, it is stated that, “whatever in your heart, it will be seen in your
actions, words, or even in the way you present yourself.”
