About This Resource

The English classes organised as Freedom English Academy by AAM Foundation are aimed at
building comfort, confidence and competence in oral communication.

The language program at Freedom English Academy has 3 different levels of proficiency aimed at
building comfort, confidence and competence in oral communication. In Level 2, the 1.45 hour long,
6 days a week classes have two parts - for 35 minutes, students learn the language using an
international software OR practice the learnt concepts through written exercises in the Workbook;
for 1 hour 10 min, students practice oral communication through planned activities organized by the
facilitator.

Along with developing English communication skills, AAM Foundation is also committed to
building critical thinking skills among its students, making them independent and reflective
thinkers. Therefore, the language lessons are layered with activities to nurture a problem-solving
mindset among students who become active contributors in their communities.

The purpose of this Workbook is to serve as a comprehensive resource for first generation learners
of English language, organizing information to boost confidence in using the language at
Intermediate level (Level II).

At the end of every week, there is a review/consolidation lesson, where the students recapitulate the
learning of the week, participate in Book Discussions and learn keyboarding/touch typing. At the
end of every week, there is a review/consolidation lesson, where the students recapitulate the
learning of the week before moving on to new content. The facilitator must ensure that the students
use a pencil to complete the workbook exercises as it will allow them to make changes, if required.
This Student Workbook comprises 48 lessons as a part of Level II (Book 4) to be completed in two
months. After the successful completion of Level II (Book 4) and regular attendance, students will
be evaluated by an external Evaluator for attainment of level-specific outcomes and if found level
proficient, the students are given Level III (Book 5). Students must carry with them both Book 4 &
5 (Level II) during evaluation.
The Student Workbook must be left behind at the Centre, after the completion of the 1 hour 45
minutes class. Students may be allowed to take the Workbook home at the end of the four months
after he/she completes Level II.

B. Innovators

Name: Manoj and Harimohan Saini

District: Alwar
State: Rajasthan

Background

Cousins Harimohan and Manoj Saini, two young innovators, have designed a car having
five wheels - with a fifth wheel in the centre.

Harimohan Saini (21 years) is from Bharatpur district of Rajasthan. The oldest of four
siblings, Harimohan is just a high school graduate and lives with his grandparents,
parents, wife and an infant daughter. Like most innovators, Harimohan had the habit of
taking things apart to figure out how they work and then reassembling them.

Manoj Saini (18 years) is a first year student of Saint Margarette College of Engineering in
Alwar. He is the third among four siblings. His father is an electrician in Dharuheda. Right
from childhood, Manoj was interested in reading books, with a special liking for electronics
and computers books.
Origin

Both young boys had heard and read about different companies trying to introduce cheap
cars in the market. In the summer of 2003 when Manoj visited Harimohan, they discussed
the possibility of making something new and concluded that they would like to make a low
cost car affordable to all. The car design that they prepared was not to be more than four
feet wide and capable of traveling alongside other vehicles in the narrow 10-12 feet wide
rural roads. They had a spare engine of a moped, which they decided to utilize as the
engine of the car. Using scrap material to develop rest of their machine, they soon had a
car ready and running. The vehicle developed by the innovators was designed to be a
bare bone model with low cost of ownership and operation.

4
Week 25

Innovation

They made the chassis of the car out of commercially available polished nickel pipes. The
wheels were taken from a scooter while the engine was from a moped. The steering gear
was made with simple mechanical linkages and mechanical brakes and accelerator, like
other cars, had also been provided. The front and rear wheels were free wheels, while the
rear central wheel (the fifth wheel) was the only driven wheel with power from the engine
transmitted directly to this fifth wheel. This technique reduces power loss. The prototype
has been tested and driven in the village with four passengers riding on it.

In the next model, the innovators plan to use a more powerful engine (100 or 150 cc motor
bike engine) and to also add a gearbox to it. Additionally, they plan to provide a jack
system with spring at the center, to lift the rear portion of the car. The projected cost for
final car with all features is estimated to be Rs 55,000-60,000. The final version would
have a maximum speed 60-70 kmph with average fuel consumption in the range of 45-50
kmpl, against 12-18 kmpl of most cars available in the market. This low cost, five-wheeled
car, can have multiple uses - ranging from giving fun rides, transportation of people and for
carrying goods.

Name: ! Divyam Gupta
District: ! Class 10 student in Delhi Public
School, Bulandhshahr
State: ! ! Uttar Pradesh
The Big Idea
Divyamʼs wanted to stop people from using the
mobile phone while on road. He did this by
placing touch sensors on the gear and steering
of a car. Safe driving requires both hands to be
either on the gear or steering wheel at all times.
If either hand is removed, the touch sensors will
infer that the driver is using a mobile phone and
will get activated. This will cause the vehicle to stop.
Inspiration for the Idea
The idea occurred to Divyam on seeing a number of newspapers reports related to road
accidents. “Going through the papers, I was struck by how many of these accidents were
said to occur because the driver was talking on the phone. That is when I started thinking
that a mechanism that would restrict mobile usage while driving would be effective in
preventing many road accidents,” he shares.
What Next?
Divyam says, “Problems make me think of preventive measures.” Next on Divyamʼs
invention list is an alarm system fitted in a train that automatically sounds an alert if the
driver falls asleep.
“Many parents and students feel that instead of spending time on projects and working on
new ideas, it is better to focus only on marks and exams. I am lucky that my parents
motivate me to try different things and be experimental,” he says.

Vithun Vivekanantham developed a sensor for helmets / steering wheels that detects
alcohol in the drivers breath and sends a signal to receiver in a police car within 1 km
radius. This signal is designed to prevent accidents by enabling police to find and take
necessary action against the drunk driver.

C. Innovators
Name: Nisha Chaube
District: Class 10 student in Ryan
International School, Noida
State: Uttar Pradesh

The Big Idea

Commuters face problems in finding a seat at
the railway / bus stations. Considering this
problem Nisha suggested adding light-weight
folding seats in traveling bags so that these
can be used, when needed.
Nisha has an innovative bent of mind and is thankful to her parents for giving her the
freedom to do things she likes. “My parents are my biggest support system as they
motivate me to keep on trying no matter what happens. They advise, suggest, question
and console – depending on what Iʼm feeling at the time,” she says.

10
Week 25

Origin of the idea

The inspiration for the idea is as interesting as the idea itself. On the way to her
grandmotherʼs home, she saw a huge advertisement for travel bags, which showed Shah
Rukh Khan sitting on the floor beside it. She thought, “If would be better if there was a
chair for him to sit on instead of the ground.” Thinking further, she realized that standing
while waiting for a bus or train was a common problem and that having an attached seat
would be great.
She created a prototype of her idea. National Innovation Foundation (NIF) later engaged
multiple design firms for creating an aesthetic and marketable product based on her idea.
After making six prototypes, the final version was ready. It is hoped that her idea would
soon be seen in the market as a product.

They came up with the idea of a modified wheelchair that can be folded and converted into
a crutch so that it is easy to take on stairs as well as be used on flat surface. The three
friends, Ramakishore, Sanjay and Tamil Selvan had gone to celebrate their friendʼs
birthday at an orphanage and were moved by the plight of a physically challenged boy. This
design of a wheel chair would help users to move around not only on flat surfaces, but
also over stairs.

Sanjay likes reading novels and listening to western music, Ramkishore likes drawing,
reading novels, and playing video games. Crazy about computers, he wants to become a
computer engineer. Tamil Selvan, who wants to become aeronautical engineer, likes
reading non-fiction, watching animation movies and day dreaming.

C. Problem-solver

Name: ! Mohammad Saidullah

District: ! Motihari
State: ! Bihar
Mohammed Saidullah, the son of a farmer, grew up in a small
village in Motihari district, Bihar. Saidullah studied up to the tenth
standard in Gajpura but could not complete his studies due to
personal reasons.

Since childhood, Saidullah has had an interest in mechanical things. He was always busy
solving problems by putting forward innovative solutions. Initially, he worked as a
mechanic because of his interest in making things with iron.

13
Week 25

Mohammad Saidullah draws inspiration for his innovations from his experiences in life. His
innovations include amphibious bicycle, mini tractor, spring loaded cycle, fodder cutter
operated mini water pump, key operated table fan and mini turbine for electric generation.
He has also a designed a magic painting, that shows the picture of eminent leaders like
Lal Bahadur Shastri, Pt. Rabindranath Tagore and Subhas Chandra Bose.

Amphibious Bicycle

Bihar is prone to floods. In

1975, there was a big flood and
Saidullah had to cross the river
to get provisions. To cross the
river he used a boat and in the
city he used a bicycle.

Then it struck him that if he

could make the bicycle float on
water as well as move on land it
would save money. Within three
days, he had developed an
amphibious bicycle. Using this
cycle he crossed the Ganga
from pahelaghat to
Mahendrughat (Patna). The initial invention cost him Rs.6,000, but now he says he will be
able to build it at a cost of Rs. 3,000.

The amphibious bicycle comprises a conventional bicycle modified with two extra
attachments that enables it to run on both water and land. The first attachment consists of
four rectangular air floats, attached to the front and rear wheel, which support the bicycle
while moving in water.

The other attachment comprises the fan blades attached in a radial manner on the spokes
of the rear wheel. When the cyclist pedals the bicycle in water, the blades attached to the
rear wheel also rotate and force the water to be pushed backwards thus enabling the
bicycle to move forward.

Key operated table fan

Given the irregular electricity supply and its increasing cost, Saidullah thought of
developing a fan that would work with a key, to provide some relief from the summer heat.
The key operated fan is a conventional fan modified with a coiled spring and hand crank-
key attached to it. On rotating the hand crank-key, the fan stores energy in the coiled
spring which delivers rotational torque. Hand cranking the key for half a minute, results in
the fan working for an hour. The cost of this fan is Rs.1000.

Apart from these innovations, Saidullah nurtures two ideas in his mind. One is to develop a
mini electric powerhouse which would produce electricity to operate at least two fans and
two bulbs. The cost of developing this is estimated at Rs.50, 000. The second idea is to
develop a helicopter, which would cost Rs. 25 lakhs.

B. Water Reuse
Water Reuse in the World

According to the World Health Organization, 40 million metric cube of wastewater is

recycled in the world every day. For what purpose?
70% of the worldʼs water is used for agriculture. An increasing number of countries are
reusing their wastewater to irrigate crops. According to the Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO), 20 million hectares of land throughout the world benefited from
untreated or partially treated wastewater in 2010.
Wastewater can also be reused as part of industrial activities. The treated water
can be used in boilers and cooling towers, or as water for washing, cleaning and other
processes.
Lastly, recycled water is also earmarked for non-food uses, including the irrigation of
green spaces (parks, golf courses, and sports fields), landscaping (waterfalls,
fountains and water features), street or vehicle cleaning, and fire prevention.
Space missions, the Concordia Station in the Antarctic, some military operation areas
and a few countries that suffer from water shortages use treated wastewater for
drinking purposes. In fact, only two cities are currently producing drinking water from
their wastewater on a major scale, namely Windhoek (Namibia) and Singapore.

B. Water Harvesting:

Read the passage below and answer the following questions:

During the monsoons every year, we allow huge amounts of

fresh water to run off our roads and pavements into the
drains where it mixes with the sewage and heads straight
for the rivers where we dump waste. Did you know that this
rain water is enough for our use during summers?
During hot summer months, the rivers usually dry up. And
our water needs increase. This puts pressure on other
sources of water, like ground water. As a result, our tube
wells and bore wells start working harder.
This is why ground water levels are going down across the
country. Earlier water could be found at a depth of 20 feet,
now we have to dig as deep as 200 feet.

If we were to collect all the water which rains on our terrace,

roads and pavements instead of letting it run into the ditches, we could actually have
vast reserves of water.

All we need to do this is create rain water tanks to store water. If water tanks and
reserves are expensive and difficult to maintain, we could even dig huge pits and
make open reservoirs. These reservoirs would not only collect the rain water but
also allow it to seep into the ground and raise the ground water level.

This type of water management and storage of rain water is called water harvesting.

It is actually a very old technique that has been used by a lot of traditional societies
for generations. Water tanks, check dams, storage wells and reservoirs are dotted
all over rural India and have seen villagers through several summers. In Kishori
village of Alwar district in Rajasthan, farmers have made Johads or check dams to
trap rain water and store them in huge reservoirs.

As water shortage and problem of water logging increase during monsoons, water
harvesting seems to be an effective water management method.

The hue and cry over the state of Delhiʼs  Commonwealth Games athletesʼ

and  Westerners, the Gamesʼ official spokesman has said.  He was referring to the
objections of teams from  Britain, New Zealand, Australia, and the  Commonwealth
Games Federation itself, that their accommodation in Delhi is “filthy”.
Pictures on the BBC news website show muddy dog paw prints on the beds, runny
brown liquid in the sinks, puddles on the bathroom floors and what appears to be
human excrement on a shower floor.  “Everyone has different standards about
cleanliness. The Westerners have different standards, we have different standards,”
said Lalit Bhanot, the Delhi Gamesʼ spokesman.

On behalf of the residents of Sector - 6, Rohini, I wish to draw your attention to the lack of medical
facilities in our locality.
Getting medical aid at the appropriate time is a reason for concern in this area as the nearest dispensary
is about four km away. Though there are some private clinics, these are beyond the reach of common
man as they are very expensive.
Considering the problems faced by us on a regular basis, I request you to make the necessary
arrangements for setting up a dispensary in our locality as soon as possible. Your efforts would be much
appreciated.
Thanking you in anticipation.

F. Read the passage

The Spending Spree

Dhruv is excited. He and his family are finally going to the Delhi Zoo. Dhruvʼs parents have
agreed to pay the entry ticket as long as he pays for the extras like rides, food, and souvenirs
with Rs. 1,000 that he has saved.
Dhruvʼs parents have brought drinking water and home cooked food. Dhruv decides to buy a
lemonade, and chooses the "all you can drink" option. For just Rs. 50 more, Dhruv can take it
to any lemonade stand in the zoo and get "free" refills. But after he finishes his first one, he
decides the lemonade doesn't really quench his thirst and he doesn't want to carry the plastic
cup around for the rest of the day, so he tosses it out without getting a single refill.
Dhruv takes the jeep ride that goes through the zoo. Dhruv is really just hungry for a plate of
lentils and ricel, but he chooses the thali meal that costs Rs. 300 more because it comes with a
toy lion. Later, in the gift shop, Dhruv sees the same toy lion for Rs.100.
Dhruv buys lots of souvenirs because he wants things that will help him remember this trip. He
buys a T-shirt, a poster, a stuffed Cheetah, and a water bottle. He even buys a huge stack of
postcards, even though his mother explains that they've taken lots of photos of the animals.
After he pays for everything, he has less that Rs.50 left.
A few weeks later, Dhruv has a lot of great memories of the Delhi Zoo. He likes his mom's
photos a lot more than the postcards he bought. Most of the souvenirs are just taking up space
in his room, and he can't remember why he wanted them so much. He was at the mall the
other day and saw an awesome skateboard with a tiger painted on it. It costs Rs. 200, but
since he spent all his money at Delhi Zoo, he can't afford it.

83
Week 30

1. Why do you think Dhruv spent almost all his money at the Delhi Zoo?
• Buying stuff usually makes a fun day even more fun.
• The shop owners work very hard to convince visitors to spend, spend, spend.
• I don't really know-it seems crazy to me!
2. In your opinion, what was Dhruvʼs biggest spending mistake?
• Spending extra for the "free" lemonade refill program.
• Spending big money on food thali when all he really wanted was an inexpensive
toy.
• Buying all those souvenirs when he already had great memories and family
photos.
3. Do you think it's fair for shop owners to charge so much for food and souvenirs?
• Totally. They have a right to charge as much as people are willing to spend.
• No, it seems greedy to me. They should lower their prices to what other places
charge.
• It doesn't bother me because I try not to spend money in shops like that.
4. In your opinion, which spending lesson is most important for Dhruv to learn?
• When you feel yourself tempted to spend, take a few minutes to calm down and
really think about it.
• Concentrate on the things you want long-term, not on the things you want this
very minute.
• Understand the tricks that people use to get you to buy things you don't need,
and make sure you don't fall for them.

Week 31

B. Creating Awareness

Meet the women who walk for miles each day to inform and educate people about sanitation
and water issues. These are the wonderful Water and Sanitation Promoters of rural Tamil
Nadu.
Sanitation is a familiar term and is often misunderstood to mean the building and using of
toilets, but this isnʼt true. It covers a whole range of thought and action including cleanliness,
personal hygiene and the safe disposal of urine and excrement. Getting this message across
in rural areas where open defecation and overall lack of hygiene is widespread, is really
important to tackling this problem.
Backiam is a Water and Sanitation Promoter
(WSP) in Pudukottai district that is made up of
5-6 villages. Trained on sanitation and personal
hygiene, her job is to pass on this training to the
village children. She is also the go-to person if
the villagers have any doubts on anything
related to sanitation. She advises them on how
to construct a toilet or get individual water pipe
connections for their homes and so on.
Two things qualify her for this role – one, she is
a resident of one of the villages in the
Panchayat and two, she is very enthusiastic
about building a strong and motivated field force. For hardly Rs. 1000 per month, the WSPs
walk and talk non-stop!
The WSP is a popular figure in the villages. She talks to every family in the village, both
individually as well as in groups on a regular basis about the benefits of having a toilet at
home. She cycles, walks and takes the bus to villages near and far. People have come to
trust her and make informed choices about having toilets in their houses.
She visits the local schools to spend time with the children. With the help of flash card and
action songs, she tells them why one should use the toilet and not go out in the open.
Once a week, she visits the local primary schools and spends an hour or two with the
children. She acquaints them with concepts of personal hygiene and sanitation through
interactive games and action songs.
Over time, the children have become familiar with the concepts of toilet and hygiene. The
time and effort put into this has already borne fruit. Many children wash their hands after
using the toilet or before eating without fail now. Some have also managed to convince their
parents into building separate toilets in their houses.
Open defecation is dying a slow death in these villages. The process has been initiated – one
child at a time – one toilet at a time.

B. A picture speaks a thousand words:

Clean cheat: Civic body photoshops Delhi road image, judges spot fraud
A Delhi high court bench spotted doctored photographs of roads and pavements in
Dwarka wiped digitally cleaned by the agencies to claim they had acted on complaints
by residents about poor civic facilities in the sub-city. The photographs were submitted
before a bench of Justice BD Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul by the South Delhi
Municipal Corporation and the DDA.
“This is photoshopped. When it comes to technology, I am a novice, but even I can say
it is photoshop. Somebody has tried to brush this up,” the bench remarked.

Caught red-handed, the counsel representing the SDMC and DDA quickly scrambled a
defence, saying there was no reason for them to smudge the details as they were
working to clean up the areas on their own.
Law student and Dwarka resident Ebbani Aggarwal, who had filed the PIL seeking a
direction to the civic agencies to clean up the area, told the bench that some work has
been done but it was not as clean as the photos show.
Aggarwal had approached the court, saying the markets, roads, footpaths and open
vacant land and other places in Dwarka ware full of filth, solid waste and construction
material.

Few Lithuanians Found A Unique Way To Draw Attention To Their Pothole

Problem And Itʼs Brilliant

One of the best ways to draw some much needed attention to the problems you're

B. Did you know?

India's 'green and clean' village

Declared to be the ʻCleanest Village in Asia” by Discover India magazine.
A small village in Meghalaya has become the envy of its neighbours. Large crowds of
visitors have been coming to the village to find out why Mawlynnong has earned the
reputation for being the cleanest and best educated in India - all its residents can read
and write and each house has a toilet.
That is no mean achievement in a country that is still struggling to educate its
population and address basic water and sanitation issues.
About 90 km from the state capital Shillong and barely 4 km from the Bangladeshi
border, Mawlynnong is much loved by its inhabitants who work hard to keep it clean.
Bamboo dustbins
It is five in the morning and pouring with rain. But that does not stop a group of
volunteers in the village from rising early to sweep the roads. This is repeated several
times a day.
"Some cleaners have been hired by the village council to sweep the roads - but many
villagers take turns to make sure they are swept several times a day because it is not
possible to pay so many people," says young volunteer Henry Khyrrum.
The streets are all dotted with dustbins made of bamboo. Every piece of litter and
almost every leaf that has fallen from a tree is immediately discarded into the bin.
Plastic bags are completely banned and all waste disposal is environmentally friendly.
Rubbish is thrown into a pit dug in a forest near the village where it is left to turn into
compost.

95
Week 31

The villagers here say that lessons in

hygiene start in school so that children can
be taught from an early age how to keep
their surroundings clean and green.
Keeping it clean now comes naturally to
most people here. The village headman
says the village council maintains very strict
discipline.
"There is a fine imposed by the village
council for anybody found to be throwing
litter around or cutting trees. You see, the
fine is just Rs. 50 but due to the
embarrassment and embarrassment that our self-respecting people feel at being fined,
they make sure to follow the rules," says village headman, Thomlin Khongthohrem.
"Besides, the council carries out strict inspections of the sanitation facilities in each
house.
"Workshops are also being organised to make people aware of the dangers from
global warming."
Experts say Mawlynnong, like the rest of the state, has a
very effective local governance system. The society is
matrilineal - meaning that land is passed down through
the female side of families - making women economically
more powerful.
"Even today we are very strict about how the forest can
be used," he says.
"People are allowed to take whatever they need from the
forest for their own use. But they cannot take anything
more than that for any kind of commercial use. They are
punished for any violation."
Mawlynnong's success is entirely driven by local
initiative. The villagers are treading a path that the rest of
India should follow.

E. Ideas for Community Action and Awareness Campaign:

1. Students researched refugee issues, wrote a quiz for other students to take, made
a video about refugees, and spoke about their own refugee experiences to
students at several middle schools around the city. One student said, “I learned a
lot of things about myself (by participating in this service learning project). I had to
do research by going to parents to ask them about the civil war (in our home
country). I learned that we can correct the misconceptions that young people have
about refugees by presenting and telling them about refugees and my life as a
refugee.”
2. After being introduced to some of the issues that surround homelessness and
poverty, students volunteered once a week for five weeks at eight different sites in
the city that serve those living in poverty. Students prepared and served food,
talked with people, and collected food and needed items to give away to the
homeless.

100
Week 31

3. Students wrote letters to local businesses asking them to contribute 0.7% of their
Friday profits earned between 2 - 4 pm to help end poverty. As the students noted,
“0.7% is significant because Jeffrey Sachs says that, if the nations of the world
contributed 0.7% of their total gross national product per year, extreme poverty
could be eliminated by the year 2015.”
4. Powerful Voice of Children - “Children have a very powerful voice which the elders
cannot help but listen. Once they are convinced about a cause they devise
ingenuous methods to convey their concerns. We may not listen to others but
when our own children caution us, we pause and ponder and often feel
embarrassed for our wrong actions against Mother Nature. Do we segregate our
waste, do we waste precious water and electricity, do we litter, do we say NO to
polybags, do we fix our vehicles if they are belching out obnoxious fumes, do we
devote just a little of our time to improve the environment — all these thoughts hit
us hard on the face when our children convey them to us. Still, we shy away from
our responsibilities as stakeholders in our respective communities.” - The CLEAN-
India programme.
Nothing is forced or suggested.
