is the biggest producer of manufac-
tured sand in Brazil. The company has
invested in a new concept for producing
manufactured sand -- using cone and
vertical shaft impact (VSI) crushers in
tandem.
The combination of the two tech-
nologies is superior to traditional plants
using only cone or VSI crushers, par-
ticularly in the feed conditions found in
the TCL quarry. Metso Minerals is the
only crusher manufacturer in the world
that owns leading technologies in both
cone and VSI crushers.
“The new concept in our quarry is
the result of many interrelated factors,”
explains Mr Eduardo Lanna, a partner
of TCL.
“First, manufactured sand has more
quality features than natural sands
while at the same time there is a clear
trend towards restricting the use of nat-
ural sands. The stagnation in the main-
line aggregates market prompted us to
invest in this line of business, which is
primarily dedicated to satisfying the
requirements of concrete producers.
“And last but not least,” he adds, “the
value of our new products is higher.” >

ivity. Four models have so far been
equipped with a single-deck screen.
The result is that one and the same
unit can produce two different prod-
ucts, one of which is calibrated. Con-
ventional track-mounted plants are
equipped with a discharge conveyor
producing one fraction.
The four models are LT95S, LT105S
and LT1213S for contract crushing and
the larger LT110S for bigger contract
crushing operations and also for quarry-
ing. The LT1213S is equipped with
an impact crusher, the others with a

The quality features of manufactured
sand include the consistent quality,
both in gradation and in lack of con-
taminants, plus the additional benefit
of micro-fines when the sand is used
unwashed.
The consumption of unwashed
manufactured sand is growing steadily
because a high level of micro-fines has
been shown to improve certain important
properties of the sand such as its com-
pressive strength, workability, shrinkage,
permeability and resistance to abrasion.
M any readers of this newsletter
have probably visited the Bauma
exhibition in Munich, Germany, at least
once. Bauma is, after all, the biggest and
most important earthmoving and con-
struction exhibition in the world.
So most likely you will already
know that the exhibition site was re-
located to a new convention centre five
years ago. The old exhibition centre in
Theresienwiese in downtown Munich
is now gone – forever.
What happened was this: A couple
of the exhibition halls were turned into
the Museum of Transport as a branch of
the Deutsche Museum headquartered in
Munich. The other buildings and struc-
tures were demolished to give way to a
new block of 1,500 residential apart-
ments and offices. This scheme will take
three years to complete, starting in 2004.
Demolition by Metso Minerals
Part of the solution was a Nordberg
LT1213 mobile crushing plant equipped
with an impact crusher. This was used
to handle the demolition debris from
four exhibition halls, all multi-storey
buildings of reinforced concrete dating
back to the early 1980s.
The job was awarded to Kolhöfer
GmbH, a 60-year-old construction
company that in recent years has spe-
cialized in waste material recycling,
investing in mobile equipment. The
LT1213 was supplied by HBN Höbel,
the local Metso Minerals dealer.
Increasing demand
The TCL quarry is located in the town
of Contagem near Belo Horizonte, the
capital city of the state of Minas Gerais.
Established in 1978, it is one of the
oldest and most important quarries in
the region.
In 2002 they changed over to manu-
factured sand after purchasing two
Nordberg Barmac B6100 crushers and
combining them in a circuit with an
existing HP cone crusher. This circuit
produces 120 t/h of minus 4.5 mm
concrete sand. A year later TLC opened

Satisfied customer
The machine met all the customer’s
expectations. Sited in the middle of
a residential area the LT1213 proved
able to perform the job without noise
or dust problems. Dust suppression was
handled by sprinklers at the crusher’s
intake opening and over the discharge
conveyor.
It took Kolhöfer just two weeks to
process 15,000 cubic metres of concrete
into backfill. The concrete was crushed
by the crusher in combination with a
a second circuit consisting of two Nord-
berg Barmac B7100s with a capacity of
70 t/h of minus 2.4 mm plaster sand.
“The attitudes of our customers to
crushed sand are changing. They are
becoming more aware of the advan-
tages of unwashed crushed sand with
high levels of micro-fines, especially
from rock as clean and free of impur-
ities as ours,” Mr Lanna says. 

42-mm product. This was partly used at
the site as frost protection material, the
rest being taken to other building sites.
Operating in tandem with the mobile
screening unit, the LT1213 is equipped
with an optional, extended discharge
conveyor that increases the normal dis-
charge height of 2.8 m to 4.2 m. 
The new Bauma
- most certainly
Bauma continues to thrive despite the
above. The next Bauma will be held
from March 29 to April 4, 2004 at the
old Munich airport. This was converted
into an exhibition center and Bauma
1998 was the first exhibition to be
held on the new site.
Bauma has been the most impor-
tant construction exhibition in the
world for decades and will continue
so. The concept includes construction,
earthmoving and building machinery
in the widest sense of the words. Natu-
rally Metso Minerals will be there with
a vast array of brand new solutions
and machinery. From now on we will

“As far as we know, Metso Minerals
is the only supplier that manufactures
this type of track-mounted crushing
plants equipped with jaw crushers. We
have been very pleased with customer
response, since well over a hundred
such S Series plants have been sold since
their introduction three years ago,”
comments Mr Jouni Hulttinen, product
manager for the contractor line of LT
plants.
The new range offers significant cus-
tomer benefits:
• Each LT is a compact plant that can be
moved on a low-bed trailer.
• The screen rotation direction can be
changed to gain either higher capacity
or improved screening efficiency in more
difficult applications such as wet mater-
ial or the need for smaller fractions.
• Servicing the screen or changing the
mesh is safe and easy since this is done
at ground level with no need for a crane.
• The LT1213S can be operated in open
or closed circuit, which provides further

opportunity for an increased amount of
calibrated end product.
The new range has already proved
highly popular. Well over 100 units have
been sold to date with sales covering the
whole world.
Two machines in one
To demonstrate the benefits of the
range, we describe here the LT110S in
more detail:
• It is the newest member in the S Series
of LT units equipped with a screen.
• The screening unit is a highly efficient
single-deck screen. Although the unit is
equipped with a longer than standard
discharge conveyor, this offers a consid-
erably larger stockpile capacity.
• The LT110S is easy to transport and
since the screen can be removed and
installed for operation in minutes, the
whole unit is an ideal choice for high-
capacity contract crushing.
• The plant is equipped with a heavy-
duty Nordberg C110 jaw crusher. Since
there are no limitations on compressive
strength, it can crush the toughest rock.
The typical capacity range is from 200
to 400 t/h.
“The prototype was ready in 2002
and so far some 10 units have been
sold to Norway, Sweden and Spain,”
Mr Jorma Kempas, product manager,

T he German economy has been in the

doldrums for some years now, as
most readers of Aggregates News will
of course know. Visiting Metso Min-
erals in Tampere, Finland, recently a
group of German customers elaborated
on the reasons underlying this trend.
The group included representatives of
Fa. Ebenhöh, Wanner + Märker, Bar-
bara Rohstoffbtrieb, AVE, Merkle and
Kalkwerk Neandertal.
“A major problem is lack of capi-
tal. The government, the states and
the municipalities don’t seem to have
resources for infrastructure develop-
ment. Government tax revenue was
the highest ever in 2002 but since this
money is allocated to social reforms
rather than to building and construc-
tion, demand for aggregates con-
tinues to be low and prices are low as a
result,” they commented.
“It is true that our businesses have
suffered in recent years and there are
still too many negative factors against
us, so there is no way we can be opti-
mistic about the short-term future,”
they observed. “Naturally, conditions
vary in different industrial sectors and
parts of the country but the factors
just outlined are largely similar all over
Germany.
“There is light somewhere at the far
end of the tunnel but it won’t brighten
our prospects in the near future. Indus-
trial output is now at the same level
as in 1986, so we’ve probably reached
rock bottom. How soon the recovery
begins, though, is anybody’s guess.”
Some measure of optimism does
exist, however – within days of the visit

economy and the Sars epidemic were
reflected in the market, dampening
investment willingness in customer
industries. The strengthening of the
euro against the dollar intensified
competition and was one of the pri-

Metso Corporation’s net sales in
January-June totalled EUR 2,055 mil-
lion (1-6/2002: EUR 2,289 million).
Aftermarket and maintenance services
accounted for 34% of net sales. The
operating profit was EUR 18.8 mil-
lion (EUR 73.5 million). Earnings per
share was a negative EUR 0.13 (posi-
tive EUR 0.12).
Metso Minerals’ six-month net
sales totalled EUR 816 million (EUR
954 million), representing 39% of
Metso Corporation’s net sales. Orders
received were EUR 832 million (EUR
1,014 million). The order backlog was
EUR 477 million (EUR 504 million).

pit mine in Greece. To gain access to
the ferrous-nickel deposit, the mine is
removing millions of tons of overbur-
den limestone. Thanks to the rock’s
good quality, it is used as aggregates
and for cement production in the area
around the capital, Athens.
Larco operates the open pit mine
on the island of Evia, off the coast of
Athens. Before the company can start
mining the ferrous-nickel deposit, it
must remove some 7-8 million tons of
limestone. It will take Larco several
years to finish the job.
