ONLINE ETHICS

Ethics is the rational reflection on what

is right, what is wrong, what is just,
what is unjust, what is good & what is
bad in terms of human behavior.
The word ethics comes from the Greek ethos which means
customs or habits. Ethics is also often called moral
philosophy. Thus, ethics means the science of customs or
habits of society. Ethics can also mean the science of
rightness and wrongness of character and conduct.
Online ethics refers to patterns of behavior
used when on the Internet, guided both by
law and personal philosophy. The great
capabilities of this communication medium
allow for the potential of great harm, cruelty,
and even crime. Internet ethic is the moral
principles that guide the use of internet. The
do’s and don'ts.
It can also be defined as rules and
regulations that internet users must abide
with. An internet user must not use the
internet to deceive people or to carry out
fraudulent activities.

Major concerns in the field of online ethics

include the protection of private
information, the limits of a presumed
freedom of expression, and issues of libel.
Understanding legal ramifications and
trusting personal philosophy used in other
areas of life can help a person determine his
or her online ethics.
Etiquettes & Netiquettes
Etiquette is defined as the formal manners and
rules that are followed in social or professional
settings. The rules for writing a thank you note are
an example of etiquette.
Netiquette is short for “Internet etiquette”. Just like
etiquette is a code of polite behavior in society,
netiquette is a code of good behavior on the
Internet.

This includes several aspects of the Internet, such

as email, social media, online chat, web forums,
website comments, multiplayer gaming, and
other types of online communication. While there
is no official list of netiquette rules or guidelines,
the general idea is to respect others online.
RULES TO FOLLOW
FOR GOOD NETIQUETTE
Avoid posting inflammatory or offensive
comments online (a.ka. Flaming)

Respect others’ privacy by not sharing personal

information, photos, or videos that another person
may not want published online.

Never spam others by sending large amounts of

unsolicited email.
Show good sportsmanship when playing online
games, whether you win or lose.

Don’t troll people in web forums or website

comments by repeatedly nagging or annoying them.

Don’t swear or use offensive language.

Avoid replying to negative comments with more
negative comments. Instead, break the cycle
with a positive post.

If someone asks a question and you know the

answer, offer to help.

Thank others who help you online.

WHY IS NETIQUETTE
IMPORTANT
“The internet etiquette or netiquette is important
because, without this, we will not respect others and be
polite online. It's incredibly easy to learn and can be
applied in almost any situation online, so we suggest
learning these rules of netiquette in terms of sending,
replying and confidentiality.”
GOLDEN RULE OF
NETIQUETTE
“Do not do or say ONLINE
what you would not do or
say OFFLINE.”
ETHICAL DILEMMA
An ethical dilemma (ethical paradox
or moral dilemma) is a problem in
the decision-making process
between two possible options,
neither of which is absolutely
acceptable from an ethical
perspective.

Participant privacy, confidentiality
and anonymity were the most
commonly reported ethical
concerns. These concerns are
applicable to internet research
across all disciplines, not just those
involving families and children.

SPAM
Spam refers to unsolicited, promotional
electronic mail usually sent in bulk to
thousands or millions of Internet users. Quite
simply, it is junk e-mail which is usually
significant annoyance to its recipients.
ETHICAL DILEMMA

SPAM
Spam has typically been associated with
‘get rich quick’ schemes and other marginal
businesses, but that is changing. As more
and more individuals conduct business in
cyberspace, mainstream advertisers and
political organizations are beginning to rely
on bulk email to sell their products or solicit
donations.
ONLINE SAFETY
In simple terms, online safety refers to
the act of staying safe online. It is also
commonly known as internet safety, e-
safety and cyber safety. It
encompasses all technological devices
which have access to the internet from
PCs and laptops to smartphones and
tablets.
Being safe online means individuals are
protecting themselves and others from
online harms and risks which may
jeopardise their personal information,
lead to unsafe communications or even
affect their mental health and
wellbeing.
WAYS TO STAY
SAFE ONLINE
Keep your computers and mobile devices up to date. Having
the latest security software, web browser, and operating
system are the best defenses against viruses, malware, and
other online threats. Turn on automatic updates so you
receive the newest fixes as they become available.

Set strong passwords. A strong password

is at least eight characters in length and
includes a mix of upper and lowercase
letters, numbers, and special characters.

Watch out for phishing scams. Phishing scams use

fraudulent emails and websites to trick users into disclosing
private account or login information. Do not click on links or
open any attachments or pop-up screens from sources you
are not familiar with.
Keep personal information personal. Hackers can use social media
profile to figure out your passwords and answer those security questions
in the password reset tools. Lock down your privacy settings and avoid
posting things like birthdays, addresses, mother’s maiden name, etc. Be
wary of requests to connect from people you do not know.

Secure your internet connection. Always protect your home wireless

network with a password. When connecting to public Wi-Fi networks,
be cautious about what information you are sending over it.

Shop safely. Before shopping online, make sure the website uses
secure technology. When you are at the checkout screen, verify that
the web address begins with https. Also, check to see if a tiny locked
padlock symbol appears on the page.

Read the site’s privacy policies. Though long and complex, privacy
policies tell you how the site protects the personal information it
collects. If you don’t see or understand a site’s privacy policy, consider
doing business elsewhere.
