Why is it important to stay safe
online?
Most of us are ‘connected’ via our laptops,
mobile phones, tablets, or personal
computer. The potential for the internet to be
a valuable and a fun resource for
entertainment, making friends, keeping in
touch and learning is a huge.
Some precautions on sharing personal
information online:
There are numerous delinquencies that can be
committed one the internet such as stalking, identity
theft, privacy violations, and harassment.

To avoid these online crimes, follow the following online


safety measures;
1. Never give any personal information out about yourself over the internet.

2. Do not give any bank or sensitive information unless you are sure that it is
a reputation business having a secure service.
3. To make sure that you are in a secured network, the website address
should begin with “http://”. Never access your accounts by following an
email link, instead type your URL by yourself.
ONLINE SECURITY

The standard definition of online security calls it


the mix of rules that are followed and actions that
are taken to make sure online user data and privacy
aren’t compromised by cybercriminals.
Be mindful of what you share
online and what site you share it
to.
Do not just accept terms and
conditions; read it.
Know the security features of the social
networking site you use by keeping you
profile private, search engines will not be
able to scan your profile.
Do not share your password with
anyone.
Avoid logging into public
networks/WIFI. Browsing in
“incognito (or private) mode will NOT
protect you from hackers.
Do not talk to strangers whether
online or face to face.
Never post anything about a future
vacation. It is similar to posting,
“Rob my house at this date .”
Add friends you know in real life.
Avoid visiting untrusted websites.
Install and update antivirus software on
your computer. Use only one antivirus
software to avoid conflicts.
If you have Wi-Fi at home, make it
private networks by adding a
password.
Avoid downloading anything
from untrusted websites.
Do not use pirated software.
Do not reply or click links from
secured site.
Make online purchases from
secured site.
NETIQUETTE
Isa combination of the words
network and etiquette. It is a set of
rules for behaving properly online.

Remember the Human Rule.

Adhere to the same standard of


behaviour online that you follow in
real life.
Know where you are in cyberspace.

Respect other people’s time and


bandwidth.
Make yourself look good online.

Share expert knowledge.


Help keep flame wars under
control.

Respect other people’s privacy.


Don’t abuse your power.

Be forgiving of others
people’s mistakes.
