Assess reading habits


Assess your reading habits time to time. It will expose your defects in reading and also tells you
about your reading quality. You can request someone to assess your reading habits so you can
improve it later.

Provide proper environment


Proper environment can make your reading more effective and relaxes your mind. The place
reader uses for his/her reading should be a quiet place. Sit comfortably in a well-ventilated room.
Avoid disturbing sounds and lights. Never read in moving vehicle.

Use eyes properly


Proper use of eyes is important for reading. Keep your eyes in a good position and sit properly.
The distance between your eyes and book should be 13-15 inches. Every half an hour, relax your
eyes.

Improve your vocabulary


Whenever you find a new word try to find its meaning in its context. It will improve your
vocabulary.
If you do not get any clue then find its meaning in dictionary.

Mind your speed


Your reading speed neither be too fast nor too slow. Good reading speed is good for reading
habit. Adapt your reading speed according to the given situation. Fast reading should be avoided
for novels, poetry, math problems and other literary work.

Practice regularly
Reading requires practice as any other skill needs. You should practice reading daily. It will
become your habit in this way. It will enhance your knowledge and vocabulary. Your
observation and understanding for different things will increase.
Critical reading
An active approach to reading that involves an in depth examination of the text. Memorization
and understanding of the text is achieved. Additionally the text is broken down into its
components and examined critically in order to achieve a meaningful understanding of the
material. Consider anything you read not as a fact, but as the argument of the writer. Taking this
starting point you will be ready to engage in critical reading. It also helps in understanding main
idea. The author’s decision is a potential topic for examination and debate, rather than for blind
acceptance.
