Question 1:

Describe one example of a sensor that makes a direct measurement and one that makes an indirect
measurement. Explain as necessary to clarify how the measurement is direct or indirect. Outline an example
from the world around you.

Question 2:

Four strain gauges are formed into bridge with only one active gauge. The nominal resistance of all of them
is Z (your 3 digit roll number) W. The gauge factor is 2.1 and the supply voltage is 10 V. Identify the strain
when the output from the bridge is 20 mV.

Question 3:

Examples of resistive transducers used for temperature measurement are RTD and thermistor. Differentiate
between RTD and thermistor in terms of material used, linearity, equation, temperature and resistance
relationship.

Question 4:

A displacement transducer with a shaft stroke of 3 inch is applied to the circuit of resistive position
transducer. The total resistance of the potentiometer is X (3 digit of your roll number * 10) Ω. The applied
voltage Vt is 5V. When the wiper is 0.9 inch, identify the value of output voltage.

Question 5:

Instead of a thermistor, an RTD is used as a sensor. The RTD has αo= 0.004/oC and R (your 3 digit roll
number) Ω, at 20oC and PD= 25mW/oC. If 8mA current passed through this sensor, identify the value of
RTD resistance if it is placed in a bath of 100oC? Also identify the offset voltage, Vo if Vs= 13.5V?
