0 Title

A study on how contractor managing waste material of IBS project in increasing site
productivity.

2.0 Overview of the title.

In Malaysia, the IBS was initiated since the 1960s, when the Ministry of Housing and
Local Government went to European municipalities to assess their housing development
plans. As the population increase, the demand of housing increases. Since then, the
construction industry has shifted to IBS method from conventional method as it provide
various benefits to the stakeholders in improving project performance. Essentially, IBS can be
defined as a process of producing components either off or on site in a large scale, transported
and installed into a structure with a low site work (Jabar et al, 2013).

Poor management of IBS will affect the performance of construction in terms of cost
and time. The success of IBS project depend on the contractor itself on how they manage the
process of IBS construction on site. Kamar (2012) stated that the factor of the IBS adoption
success is solely depend on the capability of contractor who handle the process in IBS life
cycle. The contractor have to manage all the issues in their management practices in order to
achieve high quality of IBS construction performance especially in managing waste material
on site.

According to Pans et al (2012) said that IBS method provide various benefits especially
in cost saving, safety, cleanliness, minimizing on-site wastage and reduces dependency on
manual foreign labors. Thus, the main goal of this paper is to highlight on how contractor
managing waste material of IBS project in increasing site productivity.
3.0 Problem statement.

The adoption of Industrialized Building System (IBS) is becoming significant to the

construction industry in Malaysia due to the increasing promoting and encouragement from
the government. IBS adoption is always being promoted because it provide quality and
productivity of construction, the reduction of unskilled workers and over reliance on manual
foreign workers, less volume of building materials, speedier construction time, increased
environmental and construction site cleanliness. Despite the encouragement of rigorous
benefits in IBS adoption, the construction practitioners are still dilemma about IBS utilization
due to design conflicts, technical difficulties and skill shortages during the construction phase
becoming the barriers for the contractor to manage IBS project properly on site (Jabar et al.,
2013).

According to Rahman & Omar (2006), lack of understanding and exposure to IBS
technology is one of the causes that lead to poor structural analysis and design prefabricated
components and thus contribute to difficulties during installation. Therefore, contractor’s late
installation of IBS led to delay of works and increasing waste dumping on site. The controlling
of waste management on site is really important to contractor to have smooth work during
construction phase.

Standardization of components is one of the success factors in IBS usage. Until now, the
low components standardization avoids the same components to be applied for other projects
(Hashim & Kamar, 2011). Onyeizu et al., (2011) opined that the professionals construction
assume standardization of building components as the important thing affecting IBS project
and design innovation during the installation later on.
4.0 Aim of Research.

The aim of this dissertation is to determine on how contractor managing waste material of
IBS project in increasing site productivity.

5.0 Research Objectives.

The research carried out to achieve the following objectives:

1. To identify the problems and issues faced by contractor in handling waste material
of IBS project.
2. To study on how the contractor managing waste material of IBS project according
to the initial planning.
3. To recommend the waste management practices which is equivalent to the IBS
practices.

6.0 Scope of study.

The scope of the study for this research is limited to construction industry and conducted
among contractors to identify problems and issues faced by contractor in handling waste material
of IBS project and study on how the contractor managing waste material of IBS project according
to the initial planning as well as recommend the waste management practices which is equivalent
to the IBS practices. The study focused on construction company mainly located in Selangor. In
addition, the contractors would be targeted as respondents for the purpose of this study to be
completed.

7.0 Methodology

The methodology has been used to complete the study by getting the necessary data and
information from respondents. It will ease the researcher by determining the methodology as it
acts as the guideline to conduct the research. There are several steps and strategies must be
followed before the data is collected. The description of the methodology will be as follows:
a) The problem must to be observed to make sure the study has been carried out
smoothly. The problem can assist the researcher to conduct this study. Through
the entire problem that has been reach, the researcher can get more information
and tabulate data easily.
b) The collection of data:
i. Questionnaire:

The instrument use to collect the data is questionnaire survey. The tool
is used to collect information and data on determine on how contractor
managing waste material of IBS project in increasing site productivity.
The questionnaire was prepared and designed into the set of question
to collect all data and will be distributed by hand and email to complete
this research.

ii. Interviews:

This method is used to collect data on how contractor managing waste

material of IBS project in increasing site productivity. This method will
be used to interview the professional and experience contractors and
consultants.

c) Secondary source:

Secondary sources are collected from the previous study and researches. It can
be obtained from literature within journal, articles, website from the internet which
is online database.

d) Finding, conclusion and recommendation

The process of the analyzing the data will give the findings of the research. The
finding will be used to make conclusion of the study. From the conclusion, the
recommendation is given by researcher towards this study.
