Week 5- Chapter 4
The Strength and Weaknesses of the Filipino Culture:
A socio-cultural issue
The chapter dwelled more on to the attributes of a Filipino which is either a good
and or a bad/weakness traits. These traits has been deeply embedded on the culture and
I believed that we must changed these so called “culture” which are not a strength of
Filipinos. I would just like to give insightful thought about each strengths and weaknesses.
For example we, Filipinos have this “Kanya-kanya syndrome, talangka mentality- Done
by tsismis, intriga, unconstructive criticism” when people focused more on to gossiping
others his/her time is spent on less productive things. Crab-mentality are often what
makes people be toxic to themselves and to others, and takes everything too personally
(Extreme personalism) specially in workforce when someone do have this negative
attitudes the workplace itself will no longer a nurturing place, no development or self-
improvement but rather conflict and the working ethics will be sacrificed because of this
thinking that no one should be better than someone. Instead colleagues must come
together an be professionals towards one another. I do affirmed that when all work
together better results will come and all will be benefited by the merits of such at the end.
One must compete with him/herself not to others, it would much be good to have that
moral compass because we all are someone who can do something and we don’t need
to validate our self to others. Moreover, extreme personalism is partial to some people
only and not being fair like when there is hiring for jobs, known people used their profile
as their advantage, commonly many do use personal contacts and back-up person to get
easily hired. People as well take more on to their emotions and resorted to Ad Hominem
rather than discussing the main issue or subject matter.
But the most common and not empowering traits of all is the “lack of discipline” if
only people have a high sense of discipline might we live in a society with less-or free to
several issues. Because most of the weak points of society could be traced to lack of
discipline of people. Many illnesses in the society have branched out from being against
morale and against themselves (lacking discipline). Due to such, we violated many civil
and moral law and be compulsory reprimanded by laws. If only we have sharp sense of
disciplinary act to ourselves we could probably change the path where society is leading
to. Social responsibility will bring many advantage to upbringing better society. All I can
say is that at a young age parents must ensure to teach their youngster with good values
and sent them to schools, for their holistic development as a person and soon as a
productive individual in the society will be at hand. Without disregarding the notion of
values comes education. Education of proper values and virtues starts at home in our
immediate family (functional unit) of society and then reinforce and furthered by
institutions.
