Acute Coronary Syndrome
I. DEFINITION OF TERMS
• ACUTE CORONARY SYNDROME
o an emergent situation characterized by an
acute onset of myocardial ischemia that
results in myocardial death if definitive
interventions do not occur promptly
• STEMI
o ST-segment myocardial infarction
• NSTEMI
o Non-ST-segment myocardial infarction
• MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION
o Commonly called heart attack
o Extremely dangerous condition caused by a
lack of blood flow to your heart muscle
• ECG/EKG
o Electrocardiogram records the electrical signal
from the heart to check for different heart
conditions
• ISCHEMIA
o Inadequate blood supply to the heart
• ANGINA PECTORIS
o Chest pain caused by myocardial ischemia
• INFARCTION
o Death of tissue or necrosis
• MYOCARDIUM
o Muscle of the heart
II. CLASSIFICATIONS
• UNSTABLE ANGINA
o Pre-infarction angina
o Patient has clinical manifestations of coronary
ischemia but ECG and cardiac biomarkers
show no evidence of acute MI
• STEMI
o Patient has ECG evidence of acute MI with
characteristic changes in two contiguous leads
on a 12-lead ECG
• NSTEMI
o Patient has elevated cardiac biomarkers but
no definite ECG evidence of acute MI
