PHYSIC LESSON PLAN

TEACHER : Rizka Aulia Wardhani

SCHOOL : National Leader School College
DATE : Wednesday, September 21, 2022
CLASS : Ten Science
TIME : 135 minutes
UNIT : Mass, Weight and Density

Objectives
Students will be able to
 identify weight as a force that acts on an object with mass in a gravitational field,
 recognize that acceleration due to gravity in meters per square seconds (m/s2) is equal to
gravitational field strength in newtons per kilogram (N/kg),
 calculate weight forces where acceleration due to gravity may vary,
 recognize that variation in weight due to variation in acceleration due to gravity does not
involve variation in mass.
 Density is defined by the ratio of the mass of a substance to its volume.
 For an object to float, relative to its surroundings, it must be less dense than its
surroundings.
 Density is a principle that is found in many of Earth’s processes, including the water
cycle.

Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
 Newton’s first law of motion,
 Newton’s second law of motion
 Student have learnt about the difference between mass and weight in lower secondary
science, they are aware that objects have different weight on different planet
 Student have learnt about density in lower secondary science

Concept or Principle
Mass is the measure of the amount of matter in a body. Mass is denoted using m or M. Weight is
the measure of the amount of force acting on a mass due to the acceleration due to gravity.
Weight usually is denoted by W. Weight is mass multiplied by the acceleration of gravity (g).

Misconception / Alternate Ideas:

1. The Weight of an object is not a force
2. Gravity is a form of energy, i.e. energy can be “lost” to gravity when an object that is thrown
upward slow down
3. The density of an object changes if its mass change e.g. cut an object into two and its density
is halved

Introduction:
1. Video 1
Play the first video that demonstrate about how plane gets a zero gravity
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FO_Ox_dH0M8
Student should observe the video
Elicit responses from the student on why the plane gets that situation
This will serve as a lesson opener to introduce the concept of force and gravity
2. Video 2
Play the second video that demonstrate rocket to taking off
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zsJpUCWfyPE
Ask students to think why does a space shuttle require such a large thrust when taking
off? Get the students to think about it. They will come up with answer like : the mass or
weight is very large “. Its has to overcome gravity
Is there any relationship between the mass and weight of the space shuttle and gravity?
3. Video 3
Play the second video that demonstrate ship can float https://www.youtube.com/watch?
v=H6Vk7nsNdVo
Ask students to think why why ship can float? Get the students to think about it.
The teacher can ask the student what is density and what factors on density?

Transitional statement:
Teacher introduces the topic of the lesson as the mass, weight, and density.

Development:
Teacher allow student to formulate the definition for mass and weight.
Teacher ask students to different about mass and weight
From their the definitons, mass is defined as the amount of matter in an object, while weight
is the force of gravity acting on an object
Teacher explain about density
Teacher give students with tools to make plane
Teacher will let the student flight the plane which plane they make
Student will know about application mass, weight, and density in the plane

Consolidation:
Teacher recaps the notes covered
Teacher gives students a sheet with a light ray entering a triangular glass prism and ask the
students to complete the path of the light ray and label the rays, the normal and the angles.
On completion of the diagram teacher provides the students with a triangular glass prism to
verify their drawing.
