Among the materials for Sa-skya-pa textual studies that have

appeared in recent years, some of the most promising are the
so-called "Golden Manuscripts" published in 1985 by the Sakya
Centre in Rajpur, U.P. These publications make available the
texts of a number of works of the Sa-skya hierarchs on the basis
'of well-executed and relatively early (15th or 16th century?)
manuscripts that are independent of the standard 1736 Derge
edition of the Collected Works of the Founding Masters of Sa-
skya (s a s k y a b k a ' 'b u m ). The manuscripts, which are now
preserved in the private library of a prominent Sakyapa Lama,
probably came originally from the old Tibetan principality of
Mustang in northwestern Nepal. In their modem photo-offset
edition, the manuscripts have been reproduced in black
characters on white paper. But the originals are actually just the
reverse: light (gold or silver) letters on dark black, indigo-dyed
paper, and hence their name "golden manuscripts."
The manuscripts preserve remnants of collections that had
existed intact in monasteries of Mustang probably until the
19605, when certain unscrupulous persons broke them up and
sold or gave away parts of them. These manuscripts contain
only tiny amounts of powdered gold and silver in their "ink" and
are therefore not intrinsically precious on that account, but they
were beautifully calligraphed and thus could be sold to Western
collectors of Tibetan art, who would own and display them
primarily as objects of beauty or as cultural a~ifacts. Their
value to scholars, however, lies in the fact that each manuscript

records early, independent readings of the old texts, and
therefore they can be of great importance to those who are
working systematically on these authors and works.
The manuscripts were not of course commissioned originally
for either aesthetic or textual purposes, but rather as an
expression of religious devotion, and they remain objects of
reverence for upholders of the· tradition. Therefore the later
caretakers of the manuscripts, when they realized what had
happened to some of the fascicles, piously offered many of the
remaining parts of the then-incomplete sets to high lamas for
proper, respectful safekeeping. This completed the dispersal of
the manuscripts. but it also resulted ultimately in making some
of them available to a wider public. In this case, the
preservation of these particular manuscripts in India enabled
the Sakya Centre to borrow them and to have them filmed and
published.

These golden manuscripts were apparently the fragments of
?ot OI~ebut rather of at least three different manuscript sets,
~cludmg at least one set of L a m 'b ra s biographies and two
diff~rent sets of the writings of the five Sa-skya founders. In
particular, the latter two collections included at least two sets
of the works of Sa-skya Pa:gqita (or Sa-p~) (1182-1251). The
one complete volume of the latter's works in these "Golden
Manuscripts"-namely volume 4, containing the T s h a i m a rig s
p a 'i g ter ra n g g rel--ca n be identified as part of a manuscript set
of Sa-pa:g's b k a ' 'b u m from Lo Mustang (g lo b o s m a l l th a n g )

(hereafter G), from which other fragments survive in Nepal and
Japan. (For a description of the known fragments of this set,
see below, appendix B.) But what is completely unexpected is
to find that fragments of yet another different manuscript set of
; Sa-pal}'s writings were included within the third volume, which

is labeled "Selected Writings of Sa-skya rje-btsun Grags-pa-
rgyal-mtshan. "
Recently, while checking that volume for another purpose,
I discovered that the final one hundred and seventy pages, Le.
fascicle th a , folios 370-454, contained not the works of Grags-
pa-rgyal-mtshan (1147-1216). but rather a number of epistles
and similar writings by his nephew Sa-pav. This discovery would
be interesting to anyone engaged in editing or translating Sa-
p81}.'swritings, but it is made doubly intriguing by the fact that
these manuscripts also preserve a few works ascribed to Sa-pal}.
that were previously unavailable or completely unknown. The
purpose of the present paper is therefore to list the contents of
that newly discovered fragment, and to describe some of its
more significant contents.
The Fragmentary Remains of Manuscript M, Volume 10
These writings of Sa-p8.lJ.formed the end of volume 10 (th a )
of a ~uscript S a sk y a b k a ' 'b u m collection that probably came
from Mustang (hereafter manuscript M). In this manuscript set,
the writings of the first three. Sa-skya founders comprised nine
volumes (Le. volka to ta ), just as in the Derge xylograph
edition. Thus each volume of M was larger than usti.al for such
Tibetan manuscript collections, containing roughly about as
much text as a large printed volume in the Derge "long-page"
( / d e b r in g ) format. Volume 10 was the first volume of Sa-p~'s
own writings in M.

It is remarkable that five of these works-nos.lO, 11, 12,23
and 25-are not to be found in the standard 1736 Derge printed
edition of Sa-p~'s works. One or two may be authentic (such
as no.23, the C h o s sp y o d b c u p a ), but most of these "extra-
canonical" titles would seem to have been apocryphal works
In its arrangement, manuscript M has obvious close
similarities with another manuscript from Lo Mustang (g lo b o
monastic library in NepaLI The latter manuscript may have
been a later "improved" and more carefully edited version, since
each work in it is more distinctly entitled. The works which are
known to survive from the corresponding section of manuscript

Except for where it lacks several of the more doubtful
works, this second manuscript (G) follows the same order of
arrangement for this section of Sa-pa:Q's works as in the other
. "golden manuscript" (M). The two manuscript sets thus probably

stand in a close relation to each other-as might be expected if
they were both executed by noble patrons in Mustang in roughly
the same period. It should be noted, however, that the first few
works in these sections seem to have formed a "block" in some
other Sa skya bka' 'bum manuscripts, sometimes coming after
the sD o m g su m r o o d b y e . This arrangement is quite logical and
expectable since ?Iost of the works are epistolary in nature, and
somewhat polerrucal ..
One could speculate that manuscript G (vol. d za ) was later,
and that its compiler rejected some of the works of manuscript
M (vol. th a ) as spurious. Those works would, after all have
been quite easy to spot as dubious. It is also possible, ho~ever,
that both sets,descended from an earlier third manuscript, and
that one verSIOn(M) was added to by a less critically-minded
and more inclusive compiler, while the other (G) was more
carefully and critically arranged, with special attention to the
identifying and titling of each separate work. I doubt that
manuscript M was copied from G, since M lacks the clear titles
of the latter. It is to be hoped that the catalogues or "tables of
contents" (d k a r c h a g ) to both G and M will turn up one day.
An Old Manuscript Catalogue Volume (d k a r)
In an old catalogue volume ( d k a r c h a g ) to one volume of Sa-
paJ.1's works, preserved in the library of Taruk Trulku,
Bodhnath, Kathmandu (=dkar), the final section of this volume

In the biography of Sa-pal]. by Rin-spungs-pa Ngag-dbang-
'jigs-med-grags-pa composed in 1579 (=RP), we also find the

Here the epistles (sp rin g y ig ) and replies (d ris Ia n ) have all
been arranged together. Also included in this list are at least
three letters which were never included in the standard
collections, namely nos.83 and 84, possibly apocryphal letters to
two 'Bri-gung-pa masters, and no.87, the epistle to Gur-ston. On

Ngor-chen's Record of Teachings Received (NgCh)
In the record of teachings received (g sa n y ig ) of Ngor-chen
Kun-dga'-bzang-po (1382-1456) (=NgCh), however, the
similarity in arrangement is not so close to that of the Mustang
manuscripts, and one finds instead the basic pattern for the
Derge edition. Nevertheless some parallels in arrangement are
observed at the end of the third volume of Sa-p~'s works. See

Hevajra cycle. This work is listed in the 17th-century g sa n
y ig of Gong-dkar 'Phrin-Ias-rnams-rgyal (no. 75) as T sh u l

bIOgraphy of Sa-pal} by Rin-spungs-pa Ngag-dbang-'jig-

d o n . But judging from its concluding matter, it is
apocrypha~. Th,e effus~ve .colophon states that Sa-pal}
comp?sed I~whIle only III hISfifteenth year (i.e. at age 14),

po-the full ordination name that he did not receive until
about twelve years later in 1208. Moreover the colophon's
blatant appeal to future generations of people to trust or

y id c h e s p a r g y is c ig /) is unparalleled in any of Sa-paJ].'s
writings, and probably reflects the forger's worry that his
work would be rejected as spurious.
The commentary itself may be the legitimate work of
an earlier scholar which was later slightly altered and
wrongly attributed to Sa-p~ by a forger whose motives
remain unclear.

Contents: This very brief, probably apocryphal work is
strange for its over-long colophon attributed to 'Phags-pa,
making the work reminiscent of another (genuine) set of
verses composed by Sa-p3.l}at bSam-yas, published in the
Derge edition (TB 75) as the P h y a g m tsh a n ri m o 'i b sto d
tsh ig , which 'Phags-pa took as the point of departure for a

Conclusions:
Detailed studies of the writings of the early Sa-skya-pa
master Sa-paIJ have revealed the existence of not only a
surprisingly corrupt received tradition (D), but also a complex
textual transmission for some of his most influential works, such
as the R ig s g te r, sD o m g su m ra b d b y e and m K h a s lu g . The
existence of conflicting textual traditions was also occasionally
noticed by the great traditional savants and commentators, even
as early as the 15th century. Go-rams-pa (1429-1489) and
Shakya-mchog-ldan (1428-1507), for instance, sometimes refer
in their sD o m g su m ro b d b y e and T sh a d m a rig s g te r
commentaries to much earlier readings in the· "Mongolian
xylograph edition" (h o r p a r m a ) when defending their own
proposed readings and interpretations.4 .
In another interesting case, Glo-bo mkhan-chen bSod-nams-
lhun-grub (1456-1532) cites no fewer than three different
readings for a single passage in question, when commenting on
the classification of p ra sa n g a arguments near the end of chapter
11 of the T sh a d m a rig s g te r. 5 In this case, Glo-bo mkhan-chen
was able to decide in favor of the first reading on the authority
of the interpretations found in the writings of one of Sa-pan's
direct students, Lho-pa kun-mkhyen. •
Modem scholars too should make extensive use of such
commentaries, though they cannot hope to have tbe same
access to early writings as Glo-bo mkhan-chen did, and of
course there are numerous passages which were never discussed
critically by .any commentator. Often the wider context of
discussion plays the deciding role in ascertaining what Sa-pa\l
must have meant and therefore also in selecting the preferred
reading. Here corroboration from parallel canonical sources can
tip the balance, but a supporting reading from in a text of the
same work independent of D is a godsend. And in the case of
minor works for which there exist no commentaries and where
the canonical parallels are less than obvious, other versions of
the text are often the first and last resort. For these reasons, the
search for still more early manuscripts and xylographs of Sa-
paq.'s works must go on.

This manuscript in particular would appear to be from Mustang, containing
as it does at the end the biographies of two masters born in that prinCipality:
