MEASURES OF CENTRAL TENDENCY, VARIATION & STANDARD DEVIATION

Question: Company XYZ packages sugar in 1 kg bags with the help of two machines. A manager
used to receive customers' complaints frequently because most of the sugar packages had quantity
less than 1000grams. Like 850g, 900g, 950g, etc., both the machines are not performing well in terms
of accuracy.

So he sold the old machine and decided to buy the new machine. He went to the Machine
manufacturer Factory to buy the new machine. But before buying he would like to check the accuracy
of the machines. He asked the seller to run the machine and to produce 40 samples from each
machine.

Using 40 samples he measured the weight of sugars. (Ref the table for weighing details of each
package machine wise).

Identify which machine is performing better than the others and which one you will buy? Rank the
machines in terms of accuracy?

Justify your answer with suitable statistical measures.

CONFIDENCE INTERVAL FOR MEANS

Question: Amazon generated revenue of 150 million Indian rupees from 100 million customers
during the Great Indian Festival. Imagine you are a data scientist at Amazon. Now, Amazon has 100
million customers during Great Indian Festival Imagine among those 50 million are male customers
and 50 million are female customers.

You want to analyze if the spending habit differs between the two genders. The specific question you
need an answer for is: On average do women spend more per transaction than men?

In this case, you use the average spending of the sample of 10,000 female customers & 10,000 male
customers to find out the average spending of the entire population of 50 million female customers &
50 million female customers. (Note: 1. The sample size should not be too small 2. Samples should be
random and independent)

Note : Refer Annexure II for customer transaction Samples

AIM:
To calculate the confidence interval for mean at 95 % for the given data using MS EXCEL.
PROCEDURE:
Step 1: Open the Excel datasheet & enter the data’s
Step 2: Select the samples and calculate mean using Average formula.
Step 3: Calculate Standard deviation using STDEV Formula
Step 4: Then Calculate Square root of N Using SQRT Formula
Step 5: Then apply the formula to calculate Confidence Interval - mean ± Z*(SD / √n)
Step 6: The output will appear in the same window.
RESULT:
1. Confidence interval for mean at 95 % is calculated.
2. Interpretation – On average women spending more than men during the Amazon great Indian
festival because both the upper limit and lower limit of the female confidence interval more
than male transaction. So at 95% confidence interval the average amount spent by the women
is more than the average amount spent by male.

ANALYSIS OF VARIANCE (ANOVA)

Question: A Walmart Ich(One of the biggest retailer in the world) wants to know if three different
types of advertisements(Social Media marketing, SEM, Traditional marketing) affect mean sales
differently. They use each type of advertisement at 10 different stores randomly for one month and
measure total sales for each store at the end of the month.

Note : If the overall p-value of the ANOVA is lower than our significance level, then we can
conclude that there is a statistically significant difference in mean sales between the three types of
advertisements. We can then conduct post hoc tests to determine exactly which types of
advertisements lead to significantly different results.

AIM:
To run the one way ANOVA to find out the F value or P value using MS EXCEL. Based on the “F”
or “P” statistics we can provide statistical evidence.

PROCEDURE:
Step 1: Open the Excel datasheet & enter the data’s
Step 2: Select the data’s and click data button.
Step 3: Select the “ANOVA single factor” and Click OK
Step 4:Select input range, Enable output range & click OK.
Step 5: The output will appear in the same window.
RESULT:
1. F – Calculated value – 17.9 which is less than F critical value -3.354 & P Values less than 0.05.

2. So At a 95% confidence Level there is enough evidence to prove that there is a significant
different between Social Media Marketing, SEM & Traditional Marketing.
