DISCUSSION

A. Definition of Foreign for Language Study According to Experts

Language is the main tool for communicating in human life, both individually and
socially. individually, language is a tool for expressing the contents of inner ideas to others
socially collectively, language is a tool for interacting with others.

The second language is the language obtained by humans after the acquisition of the first
language with relatively perfect mastery of the language. The use of a second language is only
in certain aspects of human life. It has fewer functions compared to the first language. In
writing, a foreign language is a combination of two words, namely language and foreign.
According to the Big Indonesian Online Dictionary, language is defined as a system of arbitrary
sound symbols used by members of a society to interact, While the word foreign is defined as
something strange and unusual. With this understanding, a foreign language can be interpreted
as a sound symbol that is arbitrary, and is used by a certain community for interacting activities.
The sound symbol is meant to have a strange and unusual for another society. In Indonesia, for
example, the mother tongue in question is the regional language of Javanese, Sundanese, Malay,
Dayak, etc. and the second language is Indonesian itself. While the foreign language that is
meant is another language that you want to learn or master, for example French. In essence, a
foreign language is a language that you want to learn or master other than your mother tongue
and second language, which is useful for communicating with native speakers of the foreign
language. That way, the use of foreign languages is alternative, namely the language is used
only in certain activities, such as when going abroad using that language or when taking elective
subjects at school.

According to Harimurti Kridalaksana (2001:21) "Language is an arbitrary sound symbol

system, which is used by members of a society to work together, interact, and identify
themselves".

According to Saville-Troile via Baihaqie, 2009: 13 is a language that is not widely used,
this is because it is only used for travel, cross-cultural communication, or taking elective subjects
at school that are not applied directly.
According to Pringgawidagda (2002:4). Finnochiaro in Hardjono (1988: 8), “language is
a sistem of arbitrary vocal symbol which permits all people in a given culture or other people
who have learned the sistem of that culture to communicate or to interact. The quote implies that
language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols that allows people in certain societies or other
people who have studied the system to communicate or interact.

According to Purwanto (1997:20) about the purpose of language, namely to form

understanding, it means that by learning a language, especially a foreign language, then as a
speaker must be able to understand what is expressed and as a listener must be able to understand
what is expressed by others.

B. Six Stages of Learning English as a Foreign Language

We cannot deny that learning English is a challenge for some people. Especially for
those of us who live in a country where English is a foreign language. However, that does not
mean learning it is impossible. This article will help you find out some stages of learning
English that you can try to follow. Apart from that, this article will also explain how to set a
study schedule, how you can stay motivated, and more. Here are the 6 stages.

1. Set Target

The first step to learning English is to set a target or goal for yourself. Setting goals has
two benefits. First, having a goal makes you more motivated because you have a real goal to
achieve. This makes it easy to monitor your progress and determine how well you are studying.
Second, remembering your goals and reasons for starting to learn English in the first place will
help you stay motivated when learning English starts to feel difficult or boring.

Remember, there are important reasons why you decided to learn English! Some
examples of goals for learning English include: Reaching a certain score on the TOEFL,
achieving a certain score on another exam that tests English language skills, being able to
understand your favorite English program without subtitles, or being able to have a conversation
with friends from abroad. There are many more destinations for you to choose from, so pick the
one that matters to you.
2. Make a Study Schedule. After setting goals, you need to determine when you will work to
achieve them. A study schedule is the best way to do this.

With a study schedule, you will be able to set aside time so you know when you need to
study, and you can set regular study targets. Creating a regular schedule and study targets will
really help to stay consistent. This makes it easier for you to remember when to study and helps
plan your schedule other than studying English.

The more detailed the study schedule, the more helpful it will be. Also try to plan what
material you will study for each study session. Also, make sure you set aside time to practice
each of the four main English skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

3. Start Learning!

After you have a study plan and goals that you will use, the next stage of learning
English is to start learning! Remember to stick to your original goal, and don't be afraid to
change your study schedule if you don't feel like you're progressing the way you want

4. Don't be afraid to make mistakes.

One of the main things that hinder learning English to improve language skills is the fear
of making mistakes. When they realize that their language skills are still very weak, many
people feel afraid to talk to other people, especially those who are more fluent. Many people
learning languages share these fears, but if you want to make progress in English, it's important
to realize and accept that you will indeed make a lot of mistakes and that's normal.

However, you may feel less intimidated if you practice with other English learners who
may also make mistakes, or you can study with native English speakers who are studying your
language so you can correct each other. In essence, it's important to remember that making
mistakes while learning a language is inevitable, and it happens to everyone.

5. Using English in Daily Activities

Once you get used to learning English, it's important to start using the language in your
daily life. You have indeed studied every material and done every exercise listed in your study
schedule. But if that's all you do, you won't be making as much progress as possible.
When learning any language, repetition and consistency are important. You need to
think about and use English often, even if it's only for a few minutes or seconds. Doing this
regularly will ensure that the language stays in your head and makes it feel more natural.

You can try to practice English in your spare time. For example, when you are waiting in
line at the grocery store, you see some type of food or object, and try to think of it in English.
Little things like these don't take much effort, but can really make progress in learning English.

6. Evaluation of Learning Outcomes on a regular basis

When you are routinely and consistently learning English, you need to stop for a moment
and think about how much progress you have made. Is it according to what you want? Has the
study schedule matched your other schedule? Do you still feel motivated to keep practicing?

Learning English is a long process, and of course the study plan that you have made
doesn't always work out perfectly throughout the process. About every month or so, stop and
think about how well your lesson plan is working and where you need to make improvements. If
you feel like you're not making the progress you'd like, change the way you practice and maybe
try a new study method. If you always miss study sessions, you need to change your study time
to another schedule. Lost motivation to keep learning? Then try a new method or find a friend
to learn together. By regularly evaluating your study results, you can ensure that you have come
a long way and are making a lot of progress.
Conclusion

If you're not sure how to learn English, it's a good idea to follow the six stages of
learning English above before you jump in and start learning. The best way to learn English is to
make a plan before you start studying with a set study schedule and regular targets to keep you
on track. By following these steps, you will know exactly how you are progressing in learning
English, and you will continue to progress and be motivated until you reach your desired English
target.
