Activity 3 - REACTION

Reactions on the following problems:

1. The State of the Philippine Environment

Human activities, such as deforestation and forest degradation, illegal fishing,

and illegal wildlife trade, are threatening the Philippines' abundant biodiversity.
Unfortunately, local stakeholders, who have the most to suffer if the environment and its
natural resources are not protected, have few economic motivations, financial resources,
or capacity to manage high biodiversity areas.
These destructions are being addressed by imposing laws to prevent the harmful
activities of the people as mandated in the first Philippine Environment Summit. It
tackled law on forest protection; anti-illegal logging and other programs to ensure the
preservations of some trees and plants; ensuring clean air for the environment and
protection of wildlife.
Protect Wildlife reduces direct threats to biodiversity within its geographic scope
by using an integrated approach that focuses on: improving decision-making through
evidence generated by science, technology, and innovation; increasing conservation
investments; building capacity in biodiversity conservation and combating wildlife
trafficking; and strengthening environmental law enforcement.

2. Philippine Agriculture

Agriculture plays a significant role in the Philippine economy. Involving about 40

percent of Filipino workers, it contributes an average of 20 percent to the Gross
Domestic Product. This output comes mainly from agribusiness, which in turn accounts
for about 70 percent of the total agricultural output (CIDA-LGSP, 2003). The main
agricultural enterprise is crop cultivation. Others are chicken broiler production, including
operation of chicken hatcheries (20.4 percent), agricultural services (19.8 percent), and
hog farming (18.4 percent) (NSO, 2002).

The Philippine Agriculture has evolved from time to time. The government has
made programs for the preservation of watershed needed for farming. Farming
nowadays has been easier because of the new technology being used. Rice, corn,
coconut, sugarcane, bananas, pineapple, coffee, mangoes, tobacco, and abaca are the
country's principal agricultural crops (a banana-like plant). Peanuts, cassava, camote (a
sort of root crop), garlic, onion, cabbage, eggplant, calamansi (a lemon variety), rubber,
and cotton are examples of secondary crops.

Small-holder farmers can enhance their incomes and gradually become more
self-reliant through commercial agriculture and improved infrastructure. The project's
development of irrigation systems in rural farming regions, which is a key component,
makes farming more efficient for the Filipino people.

3. Country Report on Climate Change Policies, Green Jobs

Philippines is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, thus it is prone to many natural
disasters. Climate change events including sea level rise, increased frequency of extreme
weather events, rising temperatures, and heavy rainfall all pose a threat to the Philippines.
This is due to the country’s vulnerability to natural dangers such as typhoons and
droughts, reliance on climate-sensitive natural resources, and extensive coastline, which
are home to the country’s main cities and most of the population. Coastal flooding poses
the greatest threat to the urban poor, many of whom live in makeshift shelters. Read on to
find out more about how climate change will affect the Philippines.
The Philippines has participated in discussions and negotiations leading to the
approval of various international agreements as a demonstration of the country's
commitment to engage in mutual efforts aimed at addressing the global problem of climate
change and achieving sustainable development. These international accords are aimed at
mitigating the consequences of climate change as well as strategic adaptation to the
changing situations.

4. Climate Change: We are the PROBLEM and the SOLUTION

Climate change has been a major problem we are facing up to this time. Our
earth has been warming at a much faster rate than it has ever happened previously, with
disastrous implications. It is caused by the actions we take against the environment.
We've been using coal and gas for electricity, heating, and transportation, but this emits
carbon dioxide, methane, and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. They float
in the air like an invisible blanket, trapping the sun's heat and preventing it from returning
to space, raising the temperature of the Earth's surface. As a result, we're seeing
extreme weather all around the world, from floods to droughts. It's also melting glaciers
and ice caps, resulting in rising sea levels.

We can't undo the impact of climate change but we can make adjustments to
slow things down, minimize our impact on the planet, and build a more stable
environment. Instead of using fossil fuels we can use renewable energy like solar and
wind energy for our electricity. Use public transportation or ride with our bicycles to
lessen the smoke emission of automobiles. We also need to use energy efficient light
bulbs to reduce energy consumption and also turn off gadgets, appliances and light
when not in use. Reuse, reduce and recycle things that are needed to lessen the waste
in our surroundings.

Climate change can greatly affect all living things on earth. If one of the species
becomes affected by sudden change in temperature, they can die and will not survive.
By this, food web would be distracted and eventually all organism will die because of
lack of food to eat. We should really take serious actions in lessening the effects on
climate change by doing the things mentioned above. We can also help by spreading
our knowledge which concerns climate change for them to be aware of its impacts and
can help in saving our mother earth.

5. Explained | World's Water Crisis | FULL EPISODE | Netflix

Water is one of the most important things to have in order for us to survive.
Water shortage occurs when a sufficient amount of water is not available to meet the
demands within a region, and it can be caused by both natural and human factors. As
we all know, water is spread unevenly across the earth's surface, and much of it is
wasted, polluted, and handled in an environmentally sustainable manner.

Overuse of water is becoming more common these days, with people using far
more than is required. Water is overused by people, animals, land, and a variety of other
things in some circumstances, and it is also utilized for recreational purposes without
regard for the effects on the environment. Water pollution is a big source of concern
because it is a key contributor to water scarcity. Pollutants such as oil, corpses,
chemicals, and feces damage the water supply. We must all work on this issue in order
to prevent water pollution, as it is our most basic requirement.

We may conserve water in a variety of ways, including water harvesting, taking

brief showers, and using washing machines. We can successfully minimize the problem
of water scarcity by teaching people about the importance of water in our daily lives. By
practicing water harvesting and other approaches, we should all adopt the water
recycling process. Reduce water scarcity using this strategy, as it is really successful.
We should all cease using artificial fertilizers and replace them with organic manure.

6. The Story of Plastic (Full Documentary)

The documentary, which emphasizes the importance of systemic change in order

to create a more sustainable and equitable world, is more urgent than ever. It gives out a
clear timeline of how we arrived at our current global plastic pollution issue and how the
oil and gas sector has effectively distorted the narrative. From the extraction of fossil
fuels to plastic disposal, and the global resistance fighting back, this film introduces
spectators to the heroes and villains behind.

By the next future years, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish unless
serious actions are taken to limit plastic pollution from manufacturing to consumption.
Trash islands have already taken over significant sections of the Pacific and Caribbean
oceans. Plastic recycling is an important step toward a circular economy, but circularity
requires action at every stage of a product's life cycle, from design through waste
management. Creating items that are long-lasting, easy to repair and can eventually be
recycled. Raise awareness and encouraging participation in clean-up and sustainable
activities. Organizing waste by type (wet or dry; recyclable or non-recyclable; plastic,
paper, metal, or glass) is the initial stage in any recycling system. This type of sorting
might take place in your house or at a formal waste management facility.
7. Michael Moore Presents: Planet of the Humans | Full Documentary | Directed by Jeff
Gibbs (movie)

The video investigates why mainstream environmental organizations and leaders

have decided to join forces with billionaires, corporations, and wealthy family foundations
in the struggle to save a planet that is supposedly in peril. Because all present types of
energy generation entail the consumption of finite resources, the film asks if green
energy can solve the challenge of society's rising resource depletion without limiting
consumption and population increase. The film's central question is whether renewable
energy sources like biomass, wind, and solar are as clean and renewable as they are
portrayed to be. However, the video depicts the renewable energy business in a twisted
and archaic manner, and does not reflect current reality. Planet of the Humans, on the
other hand, makes many critical and illuminating points and throws light on sectors that
seek technological cures rather than offering ways to minimize our usage of resources
such as water, fossil fuels, and hard-rock minerals.
