c. By using Gaussian elimination method, obtain the solution of the system of linear

7a. The polynomial P ( x ) = x 3 − 3 x 2 + ax + b, where a and b are non-zero constants,


has a factor ( x – 3 ) and leaves a remainder of a3 − a 2 when divided by ( x –a ).

i. Find the values of a and b.


ii. By using the values of a and b obtained in (a), factorise P(x) completely. [7]

b. Solve the equation :

(1 − i ) z3 − 1 − i =0 [8]

8. The points A(1, 4, 2), B(3, -1, 5) and C(2, 6, 0) lie on the plane π . A straight line 
passes through the point P(3, 7, 3) and Q(4, 5, 2).
 
a. Find AB × AC and hence obtain the Cartesian equation of the plane π . [7]
b. Find the parametric equation of the straight line  . [4]
c. Determine the coordinates of the point of intersection of the straight line  and
the plane π . [4]
