TOPIC: An Investigation into whether or not the students of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community
College favor the decision for all students to wear the same uniform or each department to have a
different uniform
1
Introduction
A school uniform is "a set of standardized clothes worn primarily for an educational institution"
("A School Uniform," 2021).
Before 2018 every department at the SALCC wore a different uniform and the DASGS
department, now renamed Pre-College, was no exception. The DASGS beige and brown
uniform circled the researcher's family for years. As a result, the researcher aimed to wear that
same uniform one day to continue the family legacy. The researcher is now on the verge of
attending College. However, the researcher recently discovered that the authorities at Sir Arthur
Lewis Community College (SALCC) abolished departmental uniforms. The institution decided
that every student across the campus should wear jeans and a polo shirt with the school's logo.
The researcher recently visited the College and casually talked about the College's decision with
a group of SALCC students. Meanwhile, some students supported the decision while others did
not. The unanswered question is whether most students are for or against the decision. As a
result, the researcher profited from the opportunity to investigate this matter as a School Base
Assessment.
Therefore, this project aims to determine whether the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College
students favor the decision for all students to wear the same uniform or have each department
wear a different uniform.

Data Collection
The researchers utilized interviews to collect data for this project. First, the researcher
interviewed college personnel to find out the different departments at the establishment. Here is
the list of the school's fourteen (14) departments.
No. Departments Initials
The researcher interviewed fifty-six (56) students concerning the topic. The group of students
interviewed consists of a year one and a year two male students and a year one and a year two
female students from each department. The researcher used the following table to interview the
students and record their responses.
Before 2018 students wore a different uniform, according to their department. However, the
school authorities changed it and got all students to wear the same uniform. Are you in favor of
the change not?

Analysis of Data
The information represents how students voted when asked the following question.
Before 2018 students wore a different uniform, according to their department. However, the
school authorities changed it and got all students to wear the same uniform. Are you in favor
of the change not?
Students had four Responses to which they voted; yes, no, I don't know, and I don't care. Table 1
shows how the random group of fifty-six (56) students voted. Table 2 shows the tally of students'
votes according to the departments, gender, and year. As expected, the totals from table 1 and
table 2 are balanced.
Here is the result shown in both Tables 1 and 2. Thirty-three (33) students said yes, twenty-one
(21) said no, one (1) did not know, and one (1) did not care.
The tallied information in table 2 was presented as a percentage in table 3, table 4, and table 5,
followed by their graphs. Here is what each table and graph represent.
Table 3 and figure 1 and figure 2
Table 3 shows how each department voted. Figure 1 shows this information through a
comparative bar graph showing how the students voted per department.
Furthermore, the information from table 3 indicates the degree to which each department
supports the College's decision.

Figure 2. is a pie chart that shows how the students voted overall. 59% of students voted in favor
of the SALCC's decision, while 38% opposed the decision, and one percent (2%) did not know
(2%) did not care.
Table 4 and figure 3
Table 4 shows the two genders voted, and this information is presented using a comparative bar
graph in figure 3. The data shows that 61% of males support the College's decision, while 36%
do not. On the other hand, 57% of females favored the College's decision. However, 39% of the
female opposed it, 4% did not know, and 4% did not care.
Table 5 and figure 4
Table 5 shows the year ones, and twos voted. This information is also presented using a
comparative bar graph, as per figure 4. The data shows that 71% of year ones support the
College's decision while 29% oppose it.
As for the year twos, 46% favored the College's decision, but 39% of the female was not, 4% of
the year twos did not know, and 4% did not care.
11
Discussion and Findings
During the survey, the SC and DTEEL departments voted against the College's decision to have
students wear uniforms across the school compass. However, the BISE, DHNMC, MIL, and
STH support the decision entirely. In the other eight departments, some are for others are against
it.
In the gender bases votes, both males and females were for and against the College's decision,
which goes for both year one and year two students. Nonetheless, the majority voted in support
of the decision.
12
Conclusion
A more significant percentage of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College student body favors
the decision for all students to wear the same uniform rather than each department having a
different uniform. Therefore, the College's authority made a good decision during this change.
