I t was found tha t the helmet she l l " b o t tomed-o u t " on the r ig id
b e e chwood headform preven ting the d e v e l opmen t o f the s e v e r e frac
ture pattern d i sp l a y e d by the a c c i de n t h e lme t . The r e fo r e , the
beechwood head form w a s c u t back and r e l i eved by a 2 1/2 inch de
p r e s s ion . The test r e s u l ts i n d i c ated a mo :r:: e severe fracture pat
t e r n at the impac t capac i ty o f the apparatu s , but again the she l l
had 'bottomed - o u t " . The depre s s i o n was c omp l e te l y c u t away , per
m i t ti n g a maximum she l l movement of about 1 inch ( from the normal
c on to u r of the headform) . The r e s u l t s of the s e impa c t s i n d i c ate
the b e g i n ni n g of a f r a c t u r e pattern , s im i l a r to the ac c id e n t h e l
me t . Howe ve r , the maximum impa c t e n e rgy o f the appara t u s w a s n o t
s u f f ic ie n t to induce f u r th e r s im i l i tude of fracture pattern .
