ACTIVITY/ASSIGNMENT #3

TAYAB, ALJ G.
BSIT – Sec.4

1. What were the issues raised by Fr. Cavanna concerning Rizal's

retraction?
- The controversies surrounding Jose Rizal centered on his purported
retraction, which centered on his conversion to the Catholic faith, as well as
the several other controversies that were tied to it, such as his marriage to
Josephine Bracken. Anti-retractonists maintained that certain claims made
by defenders of the Roman Catholic Church were false, while defenders of
the Roman Catholic Church said that certain claims were accurate.

2. According to Cavanna, did Rizal retract his Catholicism? Why or Why

not?
- Rizal did not forsake his belief in the Catholic faith. According to the
content of the book that I've read, there are a great deal of inaccuracies.
Based on the information presented by the opposing party, who said that
Rizal retracts. This is due to the fact that the researcher discovered that the
individual only read three phrases of the booklet, but yet managed to identify
eight assertions that were either baseless or completely false. The dates,
wording, translation, and use of several other terms in some of the evidence
caused it to be disqualified.

3. What were proofs presented by Cavanna for his arguments?

1. Rizal's clever opponents published what they called the "original
retraction."

2. The opposing side provided not just one but two or three distinct 'original
retractions' in addition to the first one.

3. The first book was printed in Spain, while the second was written by a
scholar from the Philippines.

4. Father Pio Pi released his opuscule into circulation. On the Iberian

Peninsula, in the Christian Death of Doctor Rizal (La Muerte Cristiana),

5. It was published by Father Pio, probably in an effort to amend Retana's

version that had been published previously.
6. The identical citation, "true copy," that was incorrectly given to Retana in
the previous paragraph has been incorrectly assigned to Fr. Pi in this
paragraph as well. These particular words, which are enclosed in quote
marks in the pamphlet, are not to be found elsewhere in the Jesuit's
opuscule. In addition, there is not a single page or chapter cited from either
Retana's or Pi's body of work.

7. Rizal's adversaries were in such a hurry that they really produced the first
"original retraction" in Fr. Pio Pi's opuscule; the second in what Fr. Garcia
claimed to be the original retraction', four decades after Rizal's death. This
shows that Rizal's enemies were in a hurry.
