General Information

The patterns reflected in this book belong to the same typographic font,
all of the letters have the same height, 36 rows, except for the letter S, as
being curved and open, needs three rows less to give it the same height.
Although the end result is three-dimensional, the pieces are made flat.

I strongly recommend that the crocheted chain stitches are crocheted

with a hook that is bigger than the one that will be used for the letter. If
we are going to crochet with 3.00 mm you need to use a crochet hook
size 3.5 mm. If we are to use crochet hook size 12.00 mm or 8.00 mm we
need to use a 2.00 mm larger crochet hook.

We must also use a bigger crochet hook when the pattern indicates
that we crochet a chain of several stitches, because if we don’t it will
make the shape smaller.

We don’t need to change the hook size when chaining the corner
stitches.

The letter patterns vary greatly from one another, the straighter ones
like for example R, L and T, are crocheted without cutting the yarn and
joining. In the letters such as O or P it is necessary to cut the thread and
rejoin.

To explain the pattern of each letter we have included a small drawing

as a guide that tells you how many pieces are crocheted, so you have a
rough idea of what to do, and at a glance it gives you a good idea of how
the pattern goes.

The three-dimensional letters have three parts: the front and the back
(which are the same) and the edges. Some letters are hollow inside (B, P,
R ...) and will have one or two additional edges. The lengths of these vary
from one letter to another and also depend on the way of sewing them.
Note that there may be some differences between the way I sew and
yours, that may mean you will need an extra row or one less for the
edges.

» Put the hook into the first loop
» Pass the yarn over the hook and through the loop

Single crochet (sc)

» Insert the hook into the chain stitch (or into the stitch of the previous row)
» Take the yarn and bring it forward
» Pass the yarn over the hook (this is called yarn over)
» Pass the yarn through the two loops

Increase a stitch with single crochet (Inc)

» Crochet two single crochets in the same stitch

Decrease one stitch with single crochet (dec)

» Insert the hook into the chain stitch (or into the stitch of the previous row)
» Take the yarn and bring it forward
» Insert the hook again into the next stitch, take the yarn and bring it forward
» Yarn over and pass it through the three loops

Yarn and hook

If you want to make names or words, they look good in different colours for
each letter, but use the same type of yarn and with the same size of crochet
hook. The material that you use is of your own choice.
The following sizes are to give you an idea:

Crocheted with hook size 2,5mm the letter will measure about 14cm tall
Crocheted with hook size 3,0mm the letter will measure about 17cm tall
Crocheted with hook size 8,00mm the letter will measure about 50cm tall
Crocheted with hook size 12,00mm the letter will measure about 80cm tall

The set of 26 letters is crocheted with 3.00 mm crochet hook, the yarn
needed for each letter varies between 125 and 175 meters, except the W that
being a double letter needs about 250 meters.
Note that if the hook used is a different size, the number of meters required
will also vary.

Filling

To fill the letters I use polyfiber, a synthetic material which is usually used
to stuff pillows and cushions. This means the letters can be washed and
dried properly.
It is convenient to put just the right amount of filling, if you put too much it
will be seen through the yarn. If you put too little it will not hold its shape.
Do not use any materials that deteriorate with water.

Needle for sewing

The size of needle that you use for sewing depends on the yarn you use.

Sewing the letters

Appliques

It is neater to finish off the letter with single crochet; this gives it a
more uniform edge. If you want the corners to look sharp you need
to do three single crochets in the same corner stitch, if you want
them more round just do one single crochet. Sew the appliques
to the fabric by hand, it is best to sew each and every one of the
stitches.

Two dimensional letters

Crochet the letter twice; one will be the front and one the rear. You
need to hide all the yarn ends before you start to join the two pieces
together, but keep in mind that one side will be the front and the
other will be the rear.
We can sew with single crochet, which will leave us a border around
the letter, if you want to make them more pointed at the corners,
single crochet three times in the same corner stitch, if you want the
corners to be round, single crochet just once. To start sewing we
must have positioned the front piece close to our body, leaving the rear on the far side.
We can fill it or not. If the letters are filled they will be the same height but slightly narrower, if they are
sewn but not filled they will be the same size. The letters are filled as you crochet or sew along.
Another option is to sew with a large needle, this will be a little slower than single crocheting around the
letter, and the letters will not have the chain stitch around the edge.

Three dimensional letters

In this case it is necessary to crochet all of the parts of the letter:

front, rear and edges, both the exterior and the interior, as shown
for each letter. Sew in all of the ends of the threads of the rear and
front before you start sewing, but keep in mind that they are done
according to each part.
The order that I prefer is: sew the inner edges to the front, the outer
edge to the front, the inner edges to the rear and the outer edge to
the rear. As we start doing this last point we start filling.
A good place to start sewing is at the bottom of the letter, starting
with the flat part. Place the front part of the letter closest to your
body and the edge behind. If you want more angular letters crochet
three single crochets in the corners, if you don’t just single crochet
one, around.
Sew each stitch with single crochet around. So that the edges end
up straight and perpendicular to the front and the rear, it is important that you crochet the same number
of stitches to the front and rear, if not the ridge will be tilted.
