Power Measurement

Objective:
To acquaint the student with construction of a prony brake and thus the determination of
brake horse power (BHP).

Theory:
The devices used for the measurement ofpower are classed under the general name of
dynamometer. Absorption dynamometer absorb the power as it is being measured. While
transmission dynamometer absorb very little of the power that is being transmitted from one
machine to another. Common absorption dynamometer are the prony brake, the electric
generator, the water break and the magnetic or eddy-current brake. Many types of mechanical
transmission dynamometers were formerly in use, but few remain except the shaft, or torsion,
dynamometra and the oraddle mounted motor.

The various types of engines, turbines and motors are developed and tested with the aid
of dynamometers, as also are railway locomotives and tractors.
