POWER UP
Which of the Filipino deity do you like most? Explain your answer.

For me, it would be Magayon. Firstly, it’s because she originated from our homeland
which is here in Bicol. I love the way she’s not easily attracted or persuaded by looks
and gifts. She lives up to her name Magayon which translates to “Beautiful”, in looks,
attitude, and everything. That’s why she’s the Filipino deity I like the most.

COMPREHENSION CHECK
1. The characters in the story are Tungkung Langit and Alunsina.
2. Tungkung Langit is a male God, he’s a very busy God that’s why he’s always
away for his jobs, he makes harsh and hasty decisions that is also the reason
why Alunsina never came back. He created the seas, the Earth, the stars in the
sky and the moon.
Alunsina is a female Goddess, she’s very conscious about her appearance and
spends most of her time to beautify her hair and appearance. She’s a very
jealous Goddess and doubted Tungkung Langit’s faith to her.
3. Alunsina started to get jealous and sent some breeze to spy on Tungkung Langit,
and Tungkung Langit found out and confronted her. They fought which made
Alunsina run away from her beloved partner.
4. Tungkung Langit is so devoted to his jobs and he doesn’t have time for his wife
and he easily makes decisions when he’s angry. He can correct this by having
breaks from his jobs and focus more on his wife, and he shouldn’t make hasty
decisions, he should let his head cool down first before doing anything. While
Alunsina on the other hand is a Goddess who easily gets jealous and she’s very
conscious on her appearance, she can correct this by having more faith in her
husband and be confident on how she looks.
5. The story showed traditional conservative gender roles: active male; passive
female. It means that the male is the one who should work and provide, while the
female stays in the house.
6. We should develop faith in love. Because our words occasionally have the
potential to damage someone, we should always think before we speak. It
demonstrates that regrets inevitably come at the end.

PRACTICE
Linguistic Dimension:

The names of the places, characters, terms used in the story are all Bikol.

Geographic Dimension:

According to the Ibalong Epic, the center of settlement was either at the Bicol River
in what is now Libmanan, Camarines Sur, or in Magallanes, Sorsogon, the
Philippines, which is known for being one of the earliest Spanish settlements on the
island of Luzon.
TRAVEL GOAL
With all of these countries given, for me, I would choose Singapore to travel to. It’s
one of my dream destinations since I was still a child. I’ve read so many things about
Singapore, but one fact about it gave me more reason to go there, and it is the
cleanest and greenest city in the world. Who wouldn’t want to live in a very clean
environment? It also shows that every citizen living in Singapore are very disciplined
individuals. That’s the reason why I want to travel to Singapore. And if I’m given a
chance to stay there, I would stay there for good.

ANG MANGA UTOS NG FRAILE

Ethnic Dimension

1. They paint Filipinos as being ignorant, foolish, and easily duped. Filipinos tend to
do as the friars instruct because they are terrified of them. They were able to
coerce Filipinos into performing wicked acts and manipulating them. The only
option available to the Filipinos is to serve as their slaves.
2. The coming of the Roman Catholicism was not beneficial to the Filipinos, for the
reason that, the Friars used it to take advantage of them and abuse them. It
never helped the Filipinos in any way, instead, it made the Filipinos slaves to the
Spaniards.

Linguistic Dimension

1. Stipends – a fixed regular sum paid as a salary or allowance.

Sanctify – to set apart to a sacred purpose or to religious use.
Covet – yearn to possess or have (something).
2. The Friars are seen to be equal to God, for the reason that they manipulated the
Filipinos to worship them and be scared of them. They made up commandments
for the people to follow in order for them to take advantage of them. Because of
this, most of the Filipinos are scared to go against the Friars.
