A MOUSE

INTRODUCTION
A mouse is an example of a computer-pointing input device that allows a computer user to move the pointer
and click on items on the monitor screen. Apart from helping a user to click and also select items, a mouse
can also help users while drawing and dragging diagrams and also browsing the internet.
The main components of a computer mouse include Left and Right buttons, a Scroll Wheel, an Internal
Circuit Board, and the Top Casing.
Today, most computer mice, especially those used in the gaming industry, have an additional component
called a trackball. A trackball helps the computer user to navigate and scroll easily and quickly, hence
increasing efficiency.
When compared to other types of computer mice, a trackball is more expensive.

MAIN COMPONENTS OF A MOUSE

Right Button: When you press the right button of a mouse a drop-down menu will appear on your computer
screen. The process of pressing and releasing the right button of a computer mouse is called Right Clicking
or Right Click.

Left Button: This button is used when you want to click an item on the monitor screen or if you want to
select one or multiple items. Sometimes people also use it for dragging to highlight icons or diagrams. The
process of pressing and releasing the left button of a computer mouse is called Left Clicking or Left Click.

Scroll Wheel: This button is located between the left and right mouse buttons. It allows the user to navigate
up and down a document or window quickly. The process of using the scroll wheel of a computer mouse is
called scroll-up or scroll-down.

Top Cover: It is a curved plastic material that covers and protects all components inside a computer mouse
from damage that may be caused by external factors like water.

Circuit Board: It is an internal component of a computer mouse where most electronic devices inside the
mouse are connected.

Mouse Cable/Connector: A mouse Cable is a physical media that facilitates communication between the
mouse and the system unit to take place.
PROCESS ANALYSIS
Computer mice are classified mainly into four categories, these include; Mechanical mouse, Trackball
mouse, Optical mouse, and Cordless mouse.
Mechanical mouse: This type of mouse has a ball underneath, which locates when the mouse is moved
around a flat surface. The sensor inside a mechanical mouse detects the direction of the ball and moves the
pointer on the monitor screen.
Trackball mouse: Compared to a mechanical mouse where the ball rolls around a flat surface, A trackball sits
on top or on the side of the mouse which allows the computer user to easily move the ball and control the
pointer on the monitor screen
Optical mouse: Optical Mice are similar to Mechanical mice, however for them, they use optical sensors to
detect the movement of the mouse by using Light Emitting Diodes (LED).
Cordless mouse: A cordless uses wireless technology to transmit signals to the system unit. This type of
mouse is bought with a USB receiver which is connected to the system unit. Before using a cordless, one
should ensure that it has a battery, and also the switch should be turned on.

CONCLUSION

Today computer mice have played an important role towards computer science, the fact that they are portable
and cost effective makes them more reliable. When someone uses a computer without a mouse it implies that
he or she should have a general understanding of all keyboard’s features.
